I am wondering whether a racket with a cardan joint mounted just next to the handle would be an even better tool. It would enable the player to actually hit the ball, but only if he gets the motion right.
That is a super-fantastic idea. Did you come up with that? There is solid biomechanical principles behind it. A good serve is essentially a kinetic chain motion in which you concentrate momentum in the racket head. However, it is also possible to do with less quality with joint moments, and a lot of players do that. The socks force the student to cultivate a kinetic chain motion because they are non-rigid and therefore do not allow you to use joint moments.
@Rambolena Good question....it's a very similar feeling/sensation but I wouldn't recommend actually using the socks to practice, they're just too long for groundstroke technique, good rhythm is definitely different than a serve.
picked up my racket and just practiced the counting tip. that alone was worth the video. can't wait to pick up some soccer socks and practice the drill. thanks so much. your videos rock!!!!
And, when you are done with the drill, you put on those socks and try kicking some balls at that soccer goal behind you :) Now seriously, with the podcast and now the videos, you provide some of the best tennis instruction on the Internet, and I have looked around! Good job, Ian.
I am going to go out and do this today !

the main problem in beginners serve is ball toss. maybe you should adress that in a video.

Great video would using socks with something a little more weighted inside give added benifits? (ie... racquet head speed)
