wow dude! i finally know who guitar jesus is!!! this vid shows important technique that nobody ever tells anyone! i will work on these muting techniques. learning from this vid i need to raise my action alot. that probably makes demon string noise come out way easier too huh?
Mate, two questions: What is your 'recommended' picking-hand position to achieve this easily? I have this problem of having my remaining 3 digits flapping in the breeze like a rebel flag (ala EVH haha). It strains my hand but I can't figure out a comfortable and unobtrusive way to position them.
Question 2: I think a lot of people will want to know the answer to this one. To develop this light touch, do you recommend having your guitar's action set as low as possible or is that unnecessary?
Good questions mate, 1) Make a loose fist to curl your remaining fingers up and out of the way. Freeze any of my picking videos to see how this looks. Or let the fingers sit on the strings to keep them muted.
2) Low actions are for people who fear tone. You need a medium to high action to let the strings properly give off bass response... Try a medium action. A light touch is just about being sensitive to how much force you are using :-)
as regards to action I'd always had my action set fairly high so I was wondering if I was missing out on something, especially since all I hear about is getting action as low as possible etc.
Nice to see somebody has done a lesson on clean technique, great stuff Rob! There's plenty of metal/shred lessons out there, but I haven't come across many, if any at all, that cover these basic areas of technique.
The videos you've been putting up lately have been superb. Really essential stuff that everyone should be taught on guitar, though sadly, some people just don't get the need to play cleanly.
Rob, you really should consider making a website that focuses on online guitar tuition. I know I'd pay to use it.
Thanks mate, I appreciate that. I have been close to having a multi media site with tuition many times before... But something always gets in the way. I have a DVD out very soon, and another two in the pipeline :-)
you rock :) thanks mate, this is the best muting tutorial on youtube :)

pianos are for people who like to make guitar face but not the awesome squealy notes that comes with a real instrument.

I wonder what Zakk Wyde would say if he heard "a harmonic isn't always desirable, esspecially when you are playing very loud with a lot of distortion"
Zakk: ..huh? You GOTTA have harmonics! How can you make a song without harmoics?!!! It's crazy!!!
