hi blake, if at all i wanna aquascape my tank for african cichlids, then can u suggest me if i can use any live plants which the cichlids wont damage and at the same time i can maintain these live plants without any special lighting or co2 equipment...i wanna add rocks and also add some live plants so that the tank looks good and also realistic..dont wanna add any plastic plants..pls advice..
Like it! :) could you please do a vid on how to place slate for breeding? Thanks :)
and just a quick point I would like to make, Peacocks/Aulonocara Dig HUGE holes, like inverted domes in the wild, and sometimes if you have a big enough tank... They can be as big as 1m-5m diameter per one fish! :O They make these for breeding, I've witnessed it in the wild, but you can also witness it at Public Aquariums :) If they have a huge Malawi tank! it's worth seeing :) Hope you found this interesting :)
hi white sand in my fish tank, and it looks very nice, except for all off my kenyi cichlids crap thats lays on top up it. Do you have any way to cope with the crap except by cleaning it every day. I was able to get it out yesterday in a water change but, now there is the same amount of crap there as before. Please help and reply.
Doesn't play sand contain sillicates I been told not to use play sand like the tank I'm a saltwater guy but would like to build a cichlid tank in the near future tank looks good
This guy is full of shit. The only intelligent thing he said was "use sand". Caves NOT necessary. This tank is boring, unnatural and and uninspiring. If you want to see REAL talent, check out anything from ADA. Or you can check out my tank (180g wc frontosa mikula tank) that's how you scape a cichlid tank.
may i ask is sand easy to clean more than gravel?because i got 55 gallon tank and i like sand also but i am worry about clean with sand make water more cloudy though!
Sand is a pain in the butt to clean truthfully. Gravel takes about one or two rinses to get it clean, and sand takes about 10 rinses to clean it. In the long run i would go with sand, it looks much cleaner in my opinion. So if you will take the time use sand.
I can't agree with your comment regarding the use of "any" kind of rock. In fact, many rocks including some "slates" have harmful metals, elements, and chemical properties such as iron oxides, rusts, etc. Many find the best rock for cichlids to be honeycomb limestone, better known as "Texas Holey Rock". It's a fantastic habitat with great buffering and pH stabilization capabilities. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive outside Texas.
Thanks for mentioning foundations -- Critical! :P Cheers
It's "Mbuna", pronounced (M-Boona) - Meaning "Rock Dweller". I do agree that countless affordable options exist for the typical hobbyist. While "play sand" is used by some, I advise against it -- It's loaded with silicates, often lacks buffering capability, and that's notwithstanding the unknown/unwanted contents. When it comes to aquaria, we have a responsibility for providing aquatic animals with a great quality of life. If that means investing a few more bucks, then do it. It's worth it.
You know what I'm going to leave it now because you said that, that's a good point. Although you should change your rocks up every two months or so, to mix up territories. Which I didn't include in the video, sorry.
@blakessunglasses I'm Going to put a video up soon showing my 29 Gal. tank and maybe you can give me some good feedback since you haven't had any fish get murdered in a single day. lol.
No dude i wouldn't put them in there with the fish you currently have. The smallest tank you can put them in is a 29 gallon for mubunas if you were to get another tank.
what size tank is this?

@Dan42357 Usually more circulation, water currant, works on that. It helps break it down and move it into the filters.

@ShubunkinKoi It is like if you every tried to empty sand from a bucket at the beach.. use lots of water and leave it in the aquarium...

the small spaces are good for smaller fish that you might get later. you know so the bigger fish can't get in with the smaller ones.
