I feel we've all gone through that "pain" he talks about. But he may be one of the only people who's found an effective way to deal with it. As he says "dig it out to the oxygen so it can burn and leave". I feel like this album is his way of showing us how he made the pain leave......
@LuvLifeLuvFwends I'm going to NY to see him in August. It's about a 3 hour drive from my house.. That's like, the one out of two places hes playing this year... =/
The amazing thing to me is you can know this about him just by listening to the album. You know he means it. After about two or three listens I had tears rolling down, just barely starting to pick up on the lyrics, and I could just feel what he was feeling when he wrote this. Amazing shit...I'm a cynical bastard when it comes to music, but this is real as it gets. Thank you, man. You made me like music again.
I sang a cappella Justin Vernon/Bon Iver music with strangers when I was on Water Street in Eau Claire, WI last weekend with people. Not too bad singing a little Bon Iver on the street he likely spent the weekends on in his college years.
I love that he's deep and emotional yet still comes across so normal. There's too many cliches and stereotypes in music and the world these days so it's so good to see someone so genuine.
@jtuner77 its not all about the voice. bob dylan's voice wasnt all that great. its more about the message you have to share.thats the most important thing.
@monsieurgrunt i'm fairly certain it's a silvertone... can't tell much about it from the video alone but it might be an archtop. i don't think they sell for much anymore.
@symfernus About the guitar.. Does anyone know if he has tuned down the guitar one step compared to the album version? It sure sounds like it. Sounds great though
@Olleax19 On the record, he uses A LOT of open tunings, and even at least one song that is tuned about 1/4 step down (Skinny Love is one that I'm aware of) So it's very possible that he's in some sort of altered tuning (er was in open D tuning and just tuned to D standard for this video?)
I thought what made this song on the record was the double-tracked and harmonized vocals, and the overall production values. well rthis video proves me wrong - one man alone and his guitar can make this sound - and i love it all the more for it.
One of my favourite memories is meeting this amazing man after his gig in Bristol 2008. I had the chance to thank him for making music that helped me accept my partial hearing loss and painful sensitivity to sound. He was so gracious and down to earth.
Me encanta él. Me encanta su música. Me encanta la profundidad y meditación a la que invita su sencillez. No dejo de emocionarme cada vez que le escucho.
hes uses the sad F chord alot, god i love that chord
i tripped across this guy from the New moon soundtrack, now...that was a dumbfucking movie, but the fact that it led me to this dude makes it worth it
Weird comment on 'For Emma...': I wish they'd kept the original coverart from the self-released version for the 2008 release. Much cooler, IMO. Well, hey, still great, great music.
I took a lot of classes with Justin Vernon in college. We were both religious studies majors, which meant we had classes together every semester since it was such a small program. I had no idea that he was a musician, though. What a surprise -- and how odd that you can spend so much time in another person's presence without ever knowing a damn thing about him.
@signejorgenson I envy you dearly. There are so few LP's that I can listen to without having to hit the "skip" button for the next track. "Emma" is one of those albums. It's stunningly beautiful and haunting--with lyrics so piercing--you have to convince yourself this man is a mere mortal like you and I.
His guitar is a "Vintage Archtop Hollowbody Sunburst Acoustic Guitar NR" ! Found it on ebay but couldn't buy it because the seller only shipped it to America & Canada :( I'm sooo sad!
i love that guitar, and i loved when he started talking about how he recorded the songs with the mic up in the guitar, the fact that he did it all by himself it's awesome
Concise response, kudos. As I understand it the album that came out last year is a retooled and remastered version of the initial release making it new and elligible for all the best of year polls that it rightfully slayed.
Aww man, you've gone and ruined it by getting all pedantic when we were having a perfectly civil youtube comments argument. We could have been the first people ever to conclude such an exchange claiming a draw, we could have been a shining light, a turning point for humanity. People would talk about events in terms of pre and post P&S (pooklette and shawnruby) but that's all gone now. For shame, I weep for the future.
In response to Claire651 I would submit Justin's songs have filled me with the most profound happiness and mindfullness. With my headphones in I can walk through the NYC subway station completely at peace...almost like I am sitting alone in his dad's cabin. These days time alone to meditate is a precious and rare gift. I am grateful and wish this for all.
does anyone reslly read these? Bon Iver make me sad, i love their music but feel like no one else has really heard of them? vernon makes me feel funny, he is amazing, wish more people appreciated them
I don't comment on youtube videos often, but feel compelled to here since I'm only the 6th comment! This video is one of the best I've found on Bon Iver. And while I feel ambiguity is a great element to music and the cabin story is overdone, I thought this feature did the perfect job of combining his 'story' with letting the beautiful sounds this man makes speak for themself. Okay, gonna watch it again now...
wow amazing video how come only 1200 views? wow this guy is amazing and been listening to his music for quiet some time now, great to know his roots and inspirations for "For Emma, Forever ago" ... Bon Iver is amazing.
I don't know how many times I'm going to read about Justin's journey to his father's cabin into himself. His record sounds like a story of an old sad friend. He is amazing.
"Learn how to say Bon Iver. Or Bonnie Bear will kill you." BEST. COMMERCIAL. EVER.
