its because usually in underground and castle levels green enemies turn blue (such as a green koopa) and bowser is recognized as an enemy so he turns blue, but then the game remembers that bowser is green, so he switches back as you walk toward him. Yes it is a glitch but still...

There's a more amusing glitch where you can grab the axe and be hit by bowser simultaneously. I think it's either that, or run out of time while grabbing the axe. I managed it once by accident a long time ago, and as I remember, mario died and fell off screen, the victory music played as the game panned over to toad telling me "the princess is in..." and then after the victory music finished, the mario death music played and I had to start back from the last continue point.

It's not a glitch. It's an exploit - all he's doing is sitting just before the point where the color palette changes and waiting for Bowser to show up in the frame.

actually no. he has many decoys like a lakitu a buzzy beetle and a koopa troopa among others. but thats only if you kill him with fire power.

@marcster1994 If one reads the booklet of the first game one would find out that Bowser gave seven of his minions the power to have his likeness. If these "Bowsers" are defeated using fireballs one can see which minion the "Bowser" really is. In the above case (1-4) it's a Goomba. In 8-4, if fireballs are used it is seen that that is the real Bowser.

That's what the fake Bowser looks like in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. He's darker in color than the real Bowser, just like Koopa Troopas in underground and castle levels.

The enemy that Bowser changes into varies from world to world. You were in World 6-4 when you shot Bowser with fireballs.
