If you've seen the launch process close up on this format of coaster (Stealth, Top Thrill Dragster, Kingda Ka), you will see a "wave" of metal plates pop up as the train launches. They are the primary brakes that deal with the energy from the rollback - there are a similar set of fixed-always-up plates which handle the "normal" initial braking work when the ride runs normally.

They are a magnetic back-EMF type of brake which ultimately dumps the kinetic energy to heat (via electric current).

it does this because not enough energy is generated by the catch car at the station so the train doesnt go over the inversion

To everyone that says its fake:

It really isn't, I've worked with these rides before and its all about momentum. If there isn't enough power, too much wind resistance, or not enough weight on the ride it wont experience enough momentum to get you over the hill. That's why they don't run these rides on windy days, cause all you'd experience is a rollback, and it'd be the same car launching forever. Ride conductors can make "test" rollbacks too, or for fun. We do it all the time!

@14jackthelad it doesnt do it on purpose, the train should get up the hill from the speed of the launch, but sometimes it isn't enough speed to carry it over, so it ends up flying back down :) and i'm not sure about the t-shit, but it'd be cool if you did :D
