  • i have 11.04 :)

  • hey,ive installed ubuntu in my vista windows(dual-boot)

how do i increase hdd space in ubuntu from my vista hdd?

  • 3 people are running Mac OS X

  • @CorporateSaboteur Mac OS X is very good OS i can say. I used it for a while ( with my friend's macbook pro ) and it acts very good.

  • @Ese186 Actually, so can I XD. I prefer it over XP, but now I am moved on to Ubuntu. The only reason I am running XP is for gaming.

  • @CorporateSaboteur Yeah thats what i did too. I got windows 7 for gaming and Ubuntu 11.04 for all other things :D

  • @Ese186 naaaaa it sucks everything is overpriced

  • lawlz @tommyevanallen252 i smell a scam

  • every time i try to boot linux based os i always end up just having a command line at the left top part of the screen and i cant type or do anything it only sits there and flashes i cant run anything or do anything but turn it off with the power button it pretty much freezes there if someone could help me with this i would truly appreciate it

  • reinstall... something might not of work right

  • what if i have a harddrive for xp and a harddrive for ubuntu ?

  • that means you are rich

well that means you can install regularly but you still need to configure it to boot from grub/lilo on the ubuntu drive

and allow it to boot to the windows drive when needed

  • ok thnx for your tips

  • ps i was just kidding about the rich bit

  • lol

  • ok same question but a bit further, I cant get windows to boot from Grub. I was first getting an error 13, not im getting an error 23. How do i setup grub to boot to windows on a second drive after ubuntu has already been installed.

  • you can try the windows boot loader

put in your xp setup cd and fix boot loader

then make an entry in boot.cfg pointing to the

    ubuntu drive try that.

  • I'm gonna order a Ubuntu Live CD and buy an external CD/DVD drive (I have a netbook, so it doesn't have a CD drive).

Then I'm gonna' install it through Windows using Wubi...

It seems the most simple option...

  • yes its simple but has problems for example if windows get corrupt you loose ubuntu aswell, i do not recommend using wubi maybe for a mess about then install correctly

  • I used Wubi and, well, I'm on Ubuntu right now so it must work.

I just have to get Ubuntu to connect to my wireless internet...

  • then why bother with wubi ? just dalu boot or wipe it out and use the ext 3 or the new ext 4 file system !!

  • ok well i just bought a 250 gb harddrive when i format it and stuff can i divide that ? to u buntu or just have ubuntu on there

  • Of course you can devide it. If you have Windows already installed that eats up the whole disk simply shrink the partition with Easeus (google it). Then boot Ubuntu from the Live CD, launch GParted and create a new partition, or partitions for Ubuntu using the unallocated space. This is just one possible way to devide your disk for Windows and Ubuntu. Easeus it's very easy to use. I used it because GParted couldn't touch the Windows partition for whatever reason.

  • tnx man . Realy helpfull :)

  • What i can't understand is why ubuntu won't install onto my computer i booted it from the cd and when it finishes booting up my monitor says no signal. Can anyone help please.

  • Ubuntu probably doesn't support the type of monitor you have in it's wide reservoir of drivers. Try a different monitor.

  • Ok ill try that but then again i don't think it is the monitor i think its the graphics card.

  • That's what I meant. The driver might not be installed.

  • All the drivers are installed. But the damn os won't load up.

  • Well then I dunno. Have you anything important on the computer?

  • Not really but don't worry about it thanks for trying to help me i will find out the main problem when i go to the shop lol.

  • great tutorial, thx alot, i have one question though, how much RAM do i need on my computer for this to work properly?

  • well the min would be 512mb, but 2gb would work best

  • ok thx alot for the quick response, i only have 512 on my computer but i was about to buy more anyway, so once i get enough ram ill let u know how this goes. thx alot

  • @hpfc123 Is it true if my notebook had 2GiB Ram I must spare 4GiB for ubuntu 11.04 swap area to work properly?

  • oh! i didn't know....you create partitions from the gnome interface, not from the bios, like windows installation .....it looks like easier to understand ;)

  • perfect guide. thanks man

  • So, this is creating a partition without deleting data on the HD? no data will be lost using this process? I refuse to use Wubi again, I want a proper dual boot with XP and Ubuntu or maybe something else.

  • nothing will be lost (data, files)

exept if you resize the patition with the original data to small

  • Thanks very good tutorial i would rate it 5/5 if it was voice but still its pretty detailed 4/5 Keep it up

  • this is exactly the information I needed to "permanently" install ubuntu and XP. Great job.

  • GRACIIIIAS!!!!! :D

  • thanks a lot! I've done it by following your vid. thanks for all the information you gave in this. it was really helpful.

  • Great video im stuck in the middle of an ubuntu install right now. Why do you make a partition between 512 to 1000Mb though? Is there a reason?

  • Well.., basically what happens when you turn your pc on is it loads an operating system thats not windows or ubuntu its loads something called "Grub" which then allows you to pick what operating system you want "Windows" or "Ubuntu".

Note: Grub isnt an operating system its actually called a "Boot Loader"

The reason for 512mb-1024mb is there this boot loader needs to be stored somewhere and that is where, now grub only needs 512mb

  • Hey, thanks alot. I think I have it now....I'll try it as soon as I get home as I left my computer at this stage. Thank you.

  • gracias!!!

  • I understand this totally. But my CD drive doesn't work. So I need to do it some other way. I do have a 60G external HD. So can I just copy linux onto the external HD and then boot up using a removable device? And if so I need to partition my disk space first right? Because I want it to be like 50/50. And without a CD drive I haven't backed up my hardrive. So if I screw this up, I'm in some trouble. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. I've looked all over the web.

  • hi, sorry for the late reply download "Gparted" on ubuntu you can then look at your harddrive in a bar chart and re-size it

  • i have tried to dual boot on my pc.

i started it up the first time and it asked for my username and password. it said user login in 10. it counts down, the screen goes black and it happens all over again. what do i do?

  • is this on the live disc ? or have you installed ?

  • gavshouse

yes it is the live disc. i cannot install as the stoopid problem will not let me in.

  • hmm well on the live disc you dont need to login, theres a user called "user" that logins auto. try downloading it again. you could press "Alt+F1" so see whats going on. you could try "ubuntu" as the username and password.

  • THATS THE PROBLEM!!! it says it is going to user in 10 seconds! then the whole screen goes black, then the same thing happens all over again. if i log in as "ubuntu" it happens again!

    WHY!?!?!?!

  • ok when in that black screen press "Alt+F1" then tell me what you see if code write it down and post it here

  • hi sorry for the slow reply im 18 myself what do you have now Windows XP and you want a Ubunut Disc ?

  • do u have to have the xp cd or can u download it cuzz idk know hwo to do this me only 14 but im learning x3 so do i have to have a cd or can i do this without the cd??

  • just download the Ubuntu Live CD .iso file (desktop edition like i did) and burn the .iso file. i'm only 12 years an it worked for me.

  • what is iso file ; i download ubuntu 8.0.4 and in a folder is just files

  • download magiciso to open it its free

  • tnx

  • ISO is a file that holds all the files and folders that go on the disc in one big folder like a zip file. There are many tools to burn a ISO googling "burn iso file" will give you many. You might have Nero installed that can do it too.

  • hi to install windows XP you need the cd well you could do a network install but you'd need a windows server etc etc, but if you have windows installed then you only need a ubuntu cd you dont need to re-install XP

  • download the .iso file from the ubuntu site

    (it's something like .zip)

and burn it (with nero, poweriso,...)

and put it in your CD-Drive, and reboot

  • my system is fucking sucking crazy slow when running a an live ubuntu cd..

how can u have that kind of speed?

    i ahve 256RAM

  • 256RAM is enough

  • he sped it up 5x

  • ouh cool..

i thought it was that real fast!

  • 256 is the minimum for Ubuntu but yes my video was at x5 at some points

NOTE: the speed of live will be alot slower then the speed of when its installed

  • thanks

  • thanks
