Children might be seperated at age 10 but they can switch at any time.
So no matter what school you go to in Germany you always have the chance to go to a college. Even if you only graduated from a Hauptschule and then get a job you can still aquire the qualification to go to college later on. Basically everyone has the chance to go to college at any age.
the good thing of german school system is that weak and clever people are seperatet. the thing of "weak" persons is... well they aren´t stupid... the thing is they don´t really want to learn and in german school system students who want to learn something and students who don´t are seperated... one negative aspect is that students get seperated when they´re 9-10 that´s to young!!!
I'm wondering why Alex gave Pharmacy as an example. Is Pharmacy really a popular choice in Germany? Well, I'm taking up Pharmacy and hoping to study further like PhD or something in Germany... LOL. fingers crossed!

for example, there's no "mittlere hochschulreife" existing
About the tuition thing in Germany.... Yeah you are right. tuition in Germany isn't as high as in U.S ,for sure. Although you better keep in mind that we do pay way more taxes than Americans do ....
Hey what bou comparing social market economy with american's economy?! Would be quiet interesting =)
~Junior School for ages 5-11 (which although is the same school its split into infants and juniors)
~Then secondary school which is age 11-16.
~Then college from 16-18/19.
~then university.
Its all free exept from nursery and university, however university is heavily subsidised and you dont have to repay tuition upfront, you pay it back when you are earning over £15,000 a year. Which is pretty cool
Has any person mentioned that homeschooling is illegal in Germany....? THAT IS a big difference between the US..there are germans imprisoned or exiled to Austria for illegally homeschooling their children. The USA education system is more focused on quantity, giving citizens equal oppurtunities, therefore generally mediocre. Whereas germany is perhaps more specialized or class oriented ..hierachical. Alex, you're right, it's really hard to decide at an age of 10 to which school you wanna to go, but if you once decided to go to Hauptschule, you still always have the opportunity to switch to a different school system. So you still can go to a Gymnasium if you visited a Hauptschule until the 10th grade before^^
you can't switch from "Hauptschule" to "Gymnasium". You can switch from "Hauptschule" to "Realschule" and from "Realschule" to" Gymnasium"
I've been to kindergarten for 2 years and started with "Grundschule" (4 Years)
continued with "Realschule" (6 more years) I graduate this summer from Realschule and continue with "Berufliches Gymnasium" which is actually the same as "Gymnasium" but has a..uhm..spezification. Which costs me 3 more years and will be pretty difficult. greetings from germany ^^
I just wanna say, I went to school in germany, started up with the "lowest" school form and worked my way up to get the university certificate they talk about. I didn't need any longer than the ones who went to gymnasium right away. I didn't think it was hard at all, and I'm not super smart or anything. It's all about work. It's also not "rare". Lots of people do it that way.
The German School-System has to be redesigned, that's fact, but in the current system there are a lot of links between the three schools.
In my case, i've been on ALL of those three diffrent schools, and in the end i've been on university and achived my diploma in information science, but yes that was a though way. Age 10 is much too early to decide, which way could be the right. So the "gesamtschule" -> comprehensive-school should be the right design, also for germany.
we are not stupid thats why we dont need bombs, because we are not assholes, just the assholes need bombs,we got a normal life without bombs, but anyway Germany is the most powerful coutnry in economy ;)
Preschool is also something to sortof babysit the children while their parents are away at work. Or it can be thought of that way. And kindergarten is required. High school grades and Junior High grades can vary through states.
Truly you are the nigger here and it will prove it when you message me back bitching about race. I'm not talking race look up the word and what it really means then try and have an intellectual conversation about it. hows that sound?
Goes to show everyone in the USA, It is possible at anytime, anywhere you can follow your dream. It is better to work hard than to have talent and not work.
in my opinion it's v hard to clarify such a topic between such different education systems. it's hard enough to clarify it for one country so it really deserves more time to discuss it. i definitely go for the german system as it not as "class"-dependent as the American one. the whole intervention of information is more organised though if america's sytem would be reduced to 10 years they'd be closer to the German system which mightn't be the worst.
i was in Germany from K-4th grade and now im in USA going to high school. i know about this subject. and i didnt had to study anything untill 8th grade in USA. Germany education is the best and really hard

I really like your clips buuutttt... the elementary school in some bundesländer (states) is 6 years ... also the kindergarten is 3 years in nearly every state.
In Quebec, Canada, we have it a bit differently. We don't really have preschool, but its available if you want it. Age 5 is kindergarten. Grades 1-6 is Elementary, and 7-11 is Highschool. Then you go to a CEGEP. You can have a 3-year course and go out and get a job in different things like some aspects of law and nursing. You can also get a 2-year course as university preperation. Then university is one year shorter I believe than in the rest of Canada/ The United States.
I can't speak about Germany, but the public school system in the U.S. isn't very good. Germany seems so beautiful...one day I shall visit! Good video.
Where I live, Kindergarden is one year, Elementery is 1st-5th, Middle is 6th-8th, and high school is 9th-12th. I graduated last year and am going to a Community College right now. Deutschland haben community college?
It also depends when you went to middle school/junior high. Educational theory changed (maybe late 80's early 90's?) from having junior high (7-8) to having middle school (6-8).
Well,, in most cities,, Elementary is from Kindergarden-5th Middle school is 6th - 8th, and High school is 9th-12. Guys, you might wanna mention that an American Bachelor is only little more than a German Abitur. All those general classes that you must take in the US to get a Bachelor are already included in the Abitur curriculum. Hence, der Vergleich hinkt ;-)
Thank you very very much, im spanish and i went to a british school (kind off USA ones... ^^) now im gonna study my university degree in Spain and i want to go to Germany to work as teacher... so this rlly helped me lots. Now im more convinced about doing teacher degree ^^ :P
In NM we had 1st-6th in elementary school--1-3 were called primary school, while 4-6 were intermediate. Then we went to junior high for two years. Then came 'Mid High", for 9th and 10th. Then 11th and 12th in senior HS.
I have been teaching for several years & have seen several different configurations for splitting the grade levels, from middle schools for 6-8th or 7-9th to 'ninth grade centers' to junior HS for (9-10th) and senior HS (11-12th). Divisions are decided upon at the local level.
well in Finland when you study in university or college like I do, you get money for your studies and for your rent. I get about 500 euros every month!!
I believe there should be restrictions in america for people to go to college. Why? because majority of the kids go because mommy and daddy pay for it, thus making it easy for colleges to charge out rageous prices, thus kids who are poor that are smart and go to college have a hard time because the ignorant party child whos mommy and daddy pays for every thing make it possible for schools to charge out the ass. Plus there is to much drinking and other ridiculous crap going on.
Hey guys, thanks for providing these informative videos!
I was born in Heidelberg, Germany back in 1951, went to USA, then Japan then back to Germany from 1958 to 1963 as a boy with my German mother who divorced my dad who was in US Army, but, my mom had already become a US Citizen, but, between 1958 and 1963, I attended German schools including the Oranienschule in Wiesbaden.
I am now 57, live in Denver, Co. and have forgotten all my German language skills. I will watch your other videos.
bei mir war's is's und wird's so sein ( ich bin in der 8. klasse)
1. - 4. klasse: grundschule
Great video here. I especially like the german at the bottom as I'm sure to be a slow German learner. I look forward to seeing the rest. Keep up the good work!
And of course, I would agree with some of the other posters, junior high 6-8th grade, high school 9th-12th
I am thrilled to see this. I lived in Germany 4 yrs, & loved it. Great to hear German again! I am researching diff types of ed sys; this is exact info I was seeking re: what does/n't work. Great job! For better effect: > US Ed info/ better contrast, Bal by bringing both equally into mix? Poss new subj matter: diffs in ecological cultures. When living there I was awed by a little tiny cylinder for a wk's trash, & people shopping daily w/ a mesh bag, no paper, plastic, cans! I learned quickly.
There are a few mistakes. Firstly kindergarden starts if you are 3 years old. Vorschule is included in the kindergarden if you are 5.
Then there is a mistake with the three forms. I'm from Baden-Württemberg (a state of Germany). If you have succeeded Hauptschule you can go to Werksrealschule here. After the normal Realschule you can go to a special type of Gymnasium, for example the WG (Wirtschaftsgymnasium) or the TG (technisches Gymnasium). After three years you get the normal Abitur.
Sorry, but the information is not correct. You dont have to decide in germany when you are ten years old that you like to go to university one day. even if you choose the other option (hauptschule or realschule) u can change school and go to "gymnasium" in order to get the diploma for starting your studies!
OR Elementary (K-8): 6-13 year olds [K-8 students do not go to middle school]
Middle School: 12-13 year olds
High School: 14-18 year olds
In grades 9-10, students have the option of choosing Academic or Applied courses. In grades 11-12, students must choose either College, Mixed, or University courses. Those who chose Academic may take any of the three but Applied students can only take C and M.
The system in Switzerland is quite similar to Germany !
The people in America and UK are dumber.. ! It's easier to enter University in US or UK .. Talking about personal experience.. By facts, only good students can enter uni in Swizterland and Germany. Those countries education system are really the top ones ..! Also I have the impression that we are more educated in Math, Science, Geography and History !
search IQ on youtube ;-)) or read Dr. Richard Lynn's book. He is, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland. Germany 1 and the US 26. Sorry!
Actually, when you graduate good at Realschule you get "erweiterter Sekundarabschluss I". With this, you can make your Abitur, which I'm doing now.
Same in Hauptschule, if you graduate good, you get "erweiterter Sekundarabschluss II", which is just as good as a normal Realschulgraduation.

You can after the levels go into higher levels when you want.
I think its better when weak people are in class an clever people are in other class. You dont have to wait of the weak people.

Guys, you might wanna mention that an American Bachelor is only little more than a German Abitur. All those general classes that you must take in the US to get a Bachelor are already included in the Abitur curriculum. Hence, der Vergleich hinkt ;-)

THANK YOU! Finally, someone else shares the same views I do haha...

1. - 4. klasse: grundschule

I learned quickly.

i were 3 years in kindergarten, and i think it's normal..... isn't it?
Sonne0987 2 years ago
There are a few mistakes. Firstly kindergarden starts if you are 3 years old. Vorschule is included in the kindergarden if you are 5.
Then there is a mistake with the three forms. I'm from Baden-Württemberg (a state of Germany). If you have succeeded Hauptschule you can go to Werksrealschule here. After the normal Realschule you can go to a special type of Gymnasium, for example the WG (Wirtschaftsgymnasium) or the TG (technisches Gymnasium). After three years you get the normal Abitur.

RepublicofSocialismZ 2 years ago
Sorry, but the information is not correct. You dont have to decide in germany when you are ten years old that you like to go to university one day. even if you choose the other option (hauptschule or realschule) u can change school and go to "gymnasium" in order to get the diploma for starting your studies!

In Canada...
Preschool: 2-3 year olds
Kindergarten: 3-5 year olds
Elementary (K-6): 6-11 year olds
