  • Actually, when you graduate good at Realschule you get "erweiterter Sekundarabschluss I". With this, you can make your Abitur, which I'm doing now.

Same in Hauptschule, if you graduate good, you get "erweiterter Sekundarabschluss II", which is just as good as a normal Realschulgraduation.

  • This is not true.

Children might be seperated at age 10 but they can switch at any time.

So no matter what school you go to in Germany you always have the chance to go to a college. Even if you only graduated from a Hauptschule and then get a job you can still aquire the qualification to go to college later on. Basically everyone has the chance to go to college at any age.

  • This is cool

  • Thank you so much. this is extremely useful information for me :)

  • This is an interesting, eye-opening and welcome series. Thank you for your efforts.

  • XD Wenn man bei uns Latein wählt, hat man ab der 11 Klasse Französisch.

Egal welche Entscheidung, man hat Französisch :(

  • the good thing of german school system is that weak and clever people are seperatet. the thing of "weak" persons is... well they aren´t stupid... the thing is they don´t really want to learn and in german school system students who want to learn something and students who don´t are seperated... one negative aspect is that students get seperated when they´re 9-10 that´s to young!!!

  • I'm wondering why Alex gave Pharmacy as an example. Is Pharmacy really a popular choice in Germany? Well, I'm taking up Pharmacy and hoping to study further like PhD or something in Germany... LOL. fingers crossed!

  • I think is well system.

You can after the levels go into higher levels when you want.

I think its better when weak people are in class an clever people are in other class. You dont have to wait of the weak people.

Bad: of gymnasium you have to choose france as second foreign language.

  • why do you have to choose french as second foreign language?

    I chose latin...

  • Canada is better then both

  • germany is way better than usa

  • mein un shculaterek gelatein heins-uncht? Nein!!!

  • in fl it same as cal

  • here in california, i went

    Pre-school

    Kindergarten

    Elementary 1-5

    Middle 6-8

    high 9-12

    then college and stuff

  • i went to school in austin texas

    pre school- 2 years

    Kindergarten

    elementary 1-5

    middle school 6-8

    high school 9-12

college (optional) depends on the school

  • Where I went to school in Texas it was:

    Kindergarten

    Elementary 1 - 4

    Intermediate 5 - 6

    Middle 7 - 8

    Ninth 9

    High School 10 - 12

  • in ca its k-5 elementry 6-8 middleschool/junior high 9-13 i think

  • in ca 9-12

  • This is really interesting. It's really fascinating to see how other countries work on an academic level!

  • hey , from a german to a german ^.^ You did switch some things about the degree's etc

for example, there's no "mittlere hochschulreife" existing

About the tuition thing in Germany.... Yeah you are right. tuition in Germany isn't as high as in U.S ,for sure. Although you better keep in mind that we do pay way more taxes than Americans do ....

Hey what bou comparing social market economy with american's economy?! Would be quiet interesting =)

  • Yeah, germans got taxes for taxes.

  • In the UK we have:

    ~Pre-School/Nursery - For ages 6months-4years.

~Junior School for ages 5-11 (which although is the same school its split into infants and juniors)

~Then secondary school which is age 11-16.

    ~Then college from 16-18/19.

    ~then university.

Its all free exept from nursery and university, however university is heavily subsidised and you dont have to repay tuition upfront, you pay it back when you are earning over £15,000 a year. Which is pretty cool

  • Austria!!!!!:D

  • richtig

  • Has any person mentioned that homeschooling is illegal in Germany....? THAT IS a big difference between the US..there are germans imprisoned or exiled to Austria for illegally homeschooling their children. The USA education system is more focused on quantity, giving citizens equal oppurtunities, therefore generally mediocre. Whereas germany is perhaps more specialized or class oriented ..hierachical. Probably germany has the better education system but as a society I think they are more spoiled

  • mine was 1-6 elementary

    7-8 middle school

    9-12 high school

  • we have pre school - 5th grade Alex.

  • Alex, you're right, it's really hard to decide at an age of 10 to which school you wanna to go, but if you once decided to go to Hauptschule, you still always have the opportunity to switch to a different school system. So you still can go to a Gymnasium if you visited a Hauptschule until the 10th grade before^^

  • you can't switch from "Hauptschule" to "Gymnasium". You can switch from "Hauptschule" to "Realschule" and from "Realschule" to" Gymnasium"

I've been to kindergarten for 2 years and started with "Grundschule" (4 Years)

continued with "Realschule" (6 more years) I graduate this summer from Realschule and continue with "Berufliches Gymnasium" which is actually the same as "Gymnasium" but has a..uhm..spezification. Which costs me 3 more years and will be pretty difficult. greetings from germany ^^

  • in austria we don't have any realschule from 5th to 8th grade. the gymnasium from 9th to 12th grade we have realgymnasium and gymnasium...

  • well realschule doesn't go from 5th to 8th grade. it goes from 5th to 10th class ^^

  • I just wanna say, I went to school in germany, started up with the "lowest" school form and worked my way up to get the university certificate they talk about. I didn't need any longer than the ones who went to gymnasium right away. I didn't think it was hard at all, and I'm not super smart or anything. It's all about work. It's also not "rare". Lots of people do it that way.

  • I went to Kindergarten from 3 to 6 oO and before I did Kinderkrippe xD

  • The German School-System has to be redesigned, that's fact, but in the current system there are a lot of links between the three schools.

In my case, i've been on ALL of those three diffrent schools, and in the end i've been on university and achived my diploma in information science, but yes that was a though way. Age 10 is much too early to decide, which way could be the right. So the "gesamtschule" -> comprehensive-school should be the right design, also for germany.

  • Germany all the way yo!!!!!

  • german system sucks, i developed later when i was 13 now i study medicine, thank the lord i went to nz with my family.

  • Germany- the most powerful country in Europe

  • what the hell u taling about?

France and England are the most powerfull country in europe!

    yeah im german

  • what are you talking about??? are you stupid??? Germany is the most powerful, after Germany england and after england France you dumb

  • u have no idea man sry. . .

    we dont have a-bombs

england and france have it. .

  • we are not stupid thats why we dont need bombs, because we are not assholes, just the assholes need bombs,we got a normal life without bombs, but anyway Germany is the most powerful coutnry in economy ;)

  • thats right ecenomy is germany one of the powerfullst in the world. .

warum schreiben wir nicht in deutsch?

  • so,i said correctly that Germany is the most powerful country in Europe, but im not German ;((((((((((( :(((((

  • ahh ok

but its ccoll that you like germany :)

  • i amazingly like Germany,but i hate so much France,for me France = shit

  • france suck big cock

  • france suckssssssss

  • i agree,france suckssssssss france is shit

  • have u msn?

  • i have just messenger and skype

  • where are u come from?

  • i come from the worst country-Moldova

  • Preschool is also something to sortof babysit the children while their parents are away at work. Or it can be thought of that way. And kindergarten is required. High school grades and Junior High grades can vary through states.

  • um. sure I grew up in Detroit and never came around any. ok I'll go for that one.

  • Truly you are the nigger here and it will prove it when you message me back bitching about race. I'm not talking race look up the word and what it really means then try and have an intellectual conversation about it. hows that sound?

  • in my state u can go to middle school from 7th to 8th grade and 9th to 12th grade is highschool

  • Finland vs Germany? hehehehe :p

    brag brag brag brag :D

  • Goes to show everyone in the USA, It is possible at anytime, anywhere you can follow your dream. It is better to work hard than to have talent and not work.

  • in my opinion it's v hard to clarify such a topic between such different education systems. it's hard enough to clarify it for one country so it really deserves more time to discuss it. i definitely go for the german system as it not as "class"-dependent as the American one. the whole intervention of information is more organised though if america's sytem would be reduced to 10 years they'd be closer to the German system which mightn't be the worst.

  • Auch wenn man nicht auf Gymnasium gegangen ist kann man nach seinem Realschulabschluss das Gymnasium besuchen. Aber das wird ja jetz sowieso alles geändert Hauptschule und Realschule sollen zusammengelegt werden

  • European schools are very strict and have a high education. Intelligence is undermined in North America.

  • i was in Germany from K-4th grade and now im in USA going to high school. i know about this subject. and i didnt had to study anything untill 8th grade in USA. Germany education is the best and really hard

  • i live SE texas.. i am 27 now.

we go to preschool 1year. kindergarten 1 year, elementary school 5 years, middle school 3 years, high school 4 years

  • btw: the whole german school-system is so complicated, that you would need a 60 minute video to explain it ;)

  • Bullshit.. After the Realschule you CAN go to Gymnasium, and graduate ;)

  • Deutschland ist einfach am geilsten!

  • I like how at the age of 10 German children are REQUIRED to learn English.

  • My teacher is from Munich/

  • was is mit fachoberschule?

  • In Iowa, elementary lasts from 1-5th grade.

  • well im from Iowa city, and most in Johnson county, and the cedar rapids area/ Linn County were from 1-6 grade.

    two years of middle school.

  • I really like your clips buuutttt... the elementary school in some bundesländer (states) is 6 years ... also the kindergarten is 3 years in nearly every state.

But anyway ... like your vid's though ^^

  • Mittlere Hochschulreife? Ein Realschüler auf einer Fachhochschule. Fehler!!!

  • my school Elementary was kindergarten to 5th.

  • I think it depends on the size of the town you live in.

    Although 1-6 elementary

7-9 junior high 10-12 high school is common. Some areas are 1-5th elementary, 6th-8th junior high and 9-12th high school.

I've also heard of places where 9th grade is separate by itself before entering high school.

  • stimmt nicht ganz:

you can make Abitur after Hauptschule and Realeschule, that is possible and also not that seldom

  • elementary = 1 - 5

    middle school = 6 - 8

    high school = 9 - 12

    (regular college = 4 years)

  • thats what we do in minnesota too

  • In Quebec, Canada, we have it a bit differently. We don't really have preschool, but its available if you want it. Age 5 is kindergarten. Grades 1-6 is Elementary, and 7-11 is Highschool. Then you go to a CEGEP. You can have a 3-year course and go out and get a job in different things like some aspects of law and nursing. You can also get a 2-year course as university preperation. Then university is one year shorter I believe than in the rest of Canada/ The United States.

  • 2 years kindergarden 8 years elemantary 4 years high school

  • Google: "Top 5 Myths About America"

  • germany is good country,i like it.

    greetings from finland :D

  • germany is the father usa the mother

  • I can't speak about Germany, but the public school system in the U.S. isn't very good. Germany seems so beautiful...one day I shall visit! Good video.

  • i had 1-5 in elementary 6-8 in middle and 9-12 in high school

  • some people do 1 to 5 in america

  • UK is the most boring country

  • can you do this for other countrys like UK vs USA or somthing please it would be sooooo funny :)

  • in austria there isn't any realschule

  • Pre School is in Germany called "Vorschule".

    I was at one.

  • Where I live, Kindergarden is one year, Elementery is 1st-5th, Middle is 6th-8th, and high school is 9th-12th. I graduated last year and am going to a Community College right now. Deutschland haben community college?

  • It also depends when you went to middle school/junior high. Educational theory changed (maybe late 80's early 90's?) from having junior high (7-8) to having middle school (6-8).

  • Well,, in most cities,, Elementary is from Kindergarden-5th Middle school is 6th - 8th, and High school is 9th-12. In some smaller school districts,,, Elementary is from Kindergarden-5th or 6th grade,, and high school is from 6th or 7th - 12th grade. It depends on the population of your city or town. Trust me,, i've lived in NY City and small towns too. I know first hand. Private schools run about the same system.

  • here in florida its preschool then kindergarden-5th is elementary school then 6th-8th is middle school and 9th-12th is high school

  • kindergarten is from 3-6

  • Guys, you might wanna mention that an American Bachelor is only little more than a German Abitur. All those general classes that you must take in the US to get a Bachelor are already included in the Abitur curriculum. Hence, der Vergleich hinkt ;-)

  • Thank you very very much, im spanish and i went to a british school (kind off USA ones... ^^) now im gonna study my university degree in Spain and i want to go to Germany to work as teacher... so this rlly helped me lots. Now im more convinced about doing teacher degree ^^ :P

  • it's first grade through fifth grade

    then sixth through eight grade

than ninth grade through tenth grade.

i don't know where this guy went to school....

  • In NM we had 1st-6th in elementary school--1-3 were called primary school, while 4-6 were intermediate. Then we went to junior high for two years. Then came 'Mid High", for 9th and 10th. Then 11th and 12th in senior HS.

I have been teaching for several years & have seen several different configurations for splitting the grade levels, from middle schools for 6-8th or 7-9th to 'ninth grade centers' to junior HS for (9-10th) and senior HS (11-12th). Divisions are decided upon at the local level.

  • well in Finland when you study in university or college like I do, you get money for your studies and for your rent. I get about 500 euros every month!!

  • i think i'll go studying in finland xD

  • I believe there should be restrictions in america for people to go to college. Why? because majority of the kids go because mommy and daddy pay for it, thus making it easy for colleges to charge out rageous prices, thus kids who are poor that are smart and go to college have a hard time because the ignorant party child whos mommy and daddy pays for every thing make it possible for schools to charge out the ass. Plus there is to much drinking and other ridiculous crap going on.

  • THANK YOU! Finally, someone else shares the same views I do haha...

  • i agree. but not everyone drinks in college

  • Hey guys, thanks for providing these informative videos!

I was born in Heidelberg, Germany back in 1951, went to USA, then Japan then back to Germany from 1958 to 1963 as a boy with my German mother who divorced my dad who was in US Army, but, my mom had already become a US Citizen, but, between 1958 and 1963, I attended German schools including the Oranienschule in Wiesbaden.

I am now 57, live in Denver, Co. and have forgotten all my German language skills. I will watch your other videos.

  • heeeeeey u did it wrong with the schools in germany!

    the best is

    Gymnasium

    Realschule

    and then... Gesamt Schule

    Hauptschule thats the right order

  • not really...

    Gymnasium

    Realschule

    Hauptschule.

Gesamtschule is something different because it combines all the 3 kinds of schools...

  • FANTABULOUS VIDEOS

  • I am thrilled to see this. I lived in Germany 4 yrs, & loved it. Great to hear German again! I am researching diff types of ed sys; this is exact info I was seeking re: what does/n't work. Great job! For better effect: > US Ed info/ better contrast, Bal by bringing both equally into mix? Poss new subj matter: diffs in ecological cultures. When living there I was awed by a little tiny cylinder for a wk's trash, & people shopping daily w/ a mesh bag, no paper, plastic, cans! I learned quickly.

  • im doin a project on this shit...help me out!!!!!

  • the thing about a private college is it's tuition is fixed. state universities tuition can be raised.

  • inner city Baltimore has a shit education system.

  • where i live it is elementary k-5 jr high 6-8 high school 9-12

  • I'm from Germany, and the german school system sucks, but the fuckin conservativ politicians bar the trying to change the system.

  • Alex, Your english is so good, Did you move to the usa or did you learn it just from an exchange ?

Your English is better then my step dad who has been in New Zealand for 8 years!

  • the way it goes where i live it is 6th in intermediate, 7th and 8th is jr.high, and 9-12th is highschool.

  • kindergarten is a german word :P

    1:0 for germany ^^

  • i were 3 years in kindergarten, and i think it's normal..... isn't it?

  • There are a few mistakes. Firstly kindergarden starts if you are 3 years old. Vorschule is included in the kindergarden if you are 5.

Then there is a mistake with the three forms. I'm from Baden-Württemberg (a state of Germany). If you have succeeded Hauptschule you can go to Werksrealschule here. After the normal Realschule you can go to a special type of Gymnasium, for example the WG (Wirtschaftsgymnasium) or the TG (technisches Gymnasium). After three years you get the normal Abitur.

  • In each german state the education system is different.

  • In Chevy Chase, MD

    Primary school:

    Pre-2 through 2nd grade

    Elementary school:

    3rd-6th grades

    Middle school:

    7-8th

    High school

    9-12th

    I love you guys =]

  • when you are ten years old you can go to "Gymnasium" !

  • Is one of the guys German??? Sounds like a German. But the informations are not correct.

  • The guy on the left is German.

  • it says in description..... and shows their name in front of that person.......

  • Sorry, but the information is not correct. You dont have to decide in germany when you are ten years old that you like to go to university one day. even if you choose the other option (hauptschule or realschule) u can change school and go to "gymnasium" in order to get the diploma for starting your studies!

  • from somerville ma

    preschool

elementary and middle school in one school in changing ( including kindergarten ) K-8

    high school 9-12

  • ...Nein^^

  • Was Ziegen damit zu tun haben weis ich zwar nich, aber meiner meinung nach bsit du ne ziemlich dämliche hackfresse.

  • (From Illinois, USA)

My Elementary was two different schools..

    K-3 in one & 4-5 in another

    6-8 Junior High School

    9-12 High School

But, I don't think it is uncommon for Elementary School to go up to 6th grade

  • Makes me glad I go to school in Belgium :p

  • well on my gesamtschule we could do abitur and then go to college

  • In Canada...

    Preschool: 2-3 year olds

    Kindergarten: 3-5 year olds

    Elementary (K-6): 6-11 year olds

OR Elementary (K-8): 6-13 year olds [K-8 students do not go to middle school]

    Middle School: 12-13 year olds

    High School: 14-18 year olds

In grades 9-10, students have the option of choosing Academic or Applied courses. In grades 11-12, students must choose either College, Mixed, or University courses. Those who chose Academic may take any of the three but Applied students can only take C and M.

  • elementary 1-5, Junior High- 6-8, High School- 9-12

  • The system in Switzerland is quite similar to Germany !

The people in America and UK are dumber.. ! It's easier to enter University in US or UK .. Talking about personal experience.. By facts, only good students can enter uni in Swizterland and Germany. Those countries education system are really the top ones ..! Also I have the impression that we are more educated in Math, Science, Geography and History !

  • Germany has the highest IQ average in Europe.

  • not really

  • According to a recent study they do, BBC reported it as well as others, you can google it.

  • dude I'm german... -.-

  • search IQ on youtube ;-)) or read Dr. Richard Lynn's book. He is, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland. Germany 1 and the US 26. Sorry!

  • And probably higher than the IQ average in america too. (Yeah, I just insulted my own country)

  • I'm from Minnesota And Junior High is 7-8 grade and High School is 9-12th grade...
