What year was this benefit? I was friends with Mike Check back in his days of playing in Drowning Incident and when he worked at the Record Store in Westport, what happened to him?
He owned a clothing store above the Java Gaia on Southwest Boulevard. The night it rained super hard and long in July 1993, he went out in the road to check on something outside the Gaia, and was hit by a pickup truck. The guy in the truck sped off. They took Mike to the hospital with serious injuries and no insurance. Later that night Southwest Boulevard including the Java Gaia flooded to the rooftops.

Yeah he did survive. He was part of the Rhumba Box. And Java Gaia only flooded 5 feet-ish. Still enough to close it down. What days those were...
