Hm, I believe in God, Jesus and all that jazz, but I don't go to church or pray that often. In any case I think in this kind of situation, prayer at least helps people to focus on something and keeps them away from panic, which is one of the worst things to do during an earthquake. So even if the person prays or repeats some kind of mantra (like "everything is going to be ok" over and over), it really helps to focus and stay calm.... at least it works for me :-)

@tnobe3 No New Zealand does not have 7.3 earthquakes everyday. It was really freakin strong and lasted quite some time. Most of us will remember that one for a while...the irony is as I type this we just had another earthquake. We've had a zillion after shocks from that one.
That was exactly how it felt in our house, too. We're in Normal Heights, also in a 90 year old home. Every window, door, light, appliance, and piece of furniture shook and sounded horrifying. But people outside weren't nearly as affected.
im sorry, I too am christian and I am all for praying to stop an earthquake. But, you all live on the west coast along the Cascadian Sub-Duction Zone along the California coastline. Trying to stop the earthquake won't happen. You all who are rude to them, try learning more about these areas of where Earthquakes will always be felt.
