I'm no expert on this game, but simply hovering while shooting isn't a good idea. Real Mi-24 tactics involve flying low and fast, only popping up for a few seconds to dive on the enemy while firing all your rockets. In general, the Soviet attack helicopter doctrine involved using them more like a fixed wing plane, rather than a hovering helicopter ;)
it is definitely my favorite bird, but it seems to get shot down easily in ArmA2... funny thing is that you can eat a couple of RPG rounds and stay airborne, but sometimes a single bullet from infantry will take out your engines :(
I know, if you come down a bit too hard on your landing (or even touch the ground with the tail fan) engines kick out instantly. This is really painful when using the UH1 (small US chopper)
