a lot of problems .. why I do not use this is because how you said it's choppy .. it's not easy to travel with .. when I have my external monitor I can put it on the tripod and do not think bout it .. it's sharp everythings clean .. only way I use this software is when I do photography.
@HawcoFreeStyle yes it does how else would you import footage unless you had a compact flash to usb converter? you use the 'male mini usb 5 pin b-type' into the camera and go usb out to your computer and then use the eos software like he said
You can use a video capture device, like the "EasyCap" (app. 15£), but you lose some qualty on the way, since the card can only capture analogue audio/video (minimum resolution for your laptop-screen may not be lower than 1024*768, so heads up!)
When I use the EOS Utility, I find that what my monitor displays and what I see on the LCD monitor of my dslr are two different things, in regards to color temperature etc. Any ideas why?
I found you on internet because of this tip, I saw your videos, they are great.
Can you tell the full name of the software you are using? I own a 5d Mark II too, but I can´t find which is the software you are using, it doesn´t seem to be any of the ones includes in the CD that came with the camera.
Hey dude thanks for the vid. Im presently filming protests and was thinking of connecting my 60D as a live veiw cam for streaming from laptop straight to internet. Is this possible?
Thanks, this is great! I went a little crazy trying to figure how to start recording but after some exploration realized the screen setting under "Live View/Movie func. set" has to be "movie display," otherwise the record button doesn't show up. You don't have access to this setting once you start "live view."
@tidmfc Hello, whats the name of the software? I cant find it in the companion CD, it installs like 6 aplications but none seem to be the correct one, thanks!
@jeisinga@jeisinga Depends on what kind of quality you want. You still have the same 4gb file limitation. I got mine to around 20 minutes per file for a wedding (whilst still maintaining decent quality) but Magic lantern has an auto resume feature so it will automatically start recording a new file (missing out a couple of seconds in between). I got around this by having two cameras and cutting between them.
Thank you so much for this. I knew the Canon software would not record video to the computer hard drive, so it never occurred to me that it would still control and monitor video recording. You saved me at least a couple of hundred dollars on what I'm sure would have been an inferior monitor, plus now I get video controls within arm's reach.
YES! I am trying to make more Hi-Def videos for youtube and the camera I have doesn't really allow me to be able to focus on myself because I am so close to it and my lens is, I think, a 55-80? So hopefully this will work!!!
I'm using 'eos camera movie record' it's actually for stellar photography, but you can use it the same way as eos utility, but has a much better framerate (up to 30 or more). it sometimes drops a frame, but it's still a lot less jittery then eos utility. the only thing you can't is start the recording of the camera from the pc. if you record with this program (from the pc) it's recorded on your computer in 720p (including the frame drops), so just press rec on the camera for 1080p
@TheCackney As far as I know it will, I am able to get video out with my camera, tho I didn't run it into the EOS software on the computer, but it did work out to a standard monitor while running magic lantern
Is there any way to remove the white focus box in the view window on the laptop. I want to use my 7D to broadcast live footage on ustream.tv. Using software called 'camtwist' to route the camera view through Adobe flash media live encoder onto the website. But unfortunately the way the software works I can't have any windows in front of the EOS window or else it will show up on the live stream. hence why i need to get rid of the focus box as this also shows up. Any suggestions or a better way?
I was going to buy an external monitor, when I saw your video! I can use my laptop!! I tried and it works!! Amazing!! :D
I have only one question for you... do you think I'll get a faster video and better quality (on my laptop) if I use an hdmi cable insted of usb? beacuse I have to buy a mini-hdmi cable for my 550d yet...does it worth?
I gotta question for you. I have the canon eos rebel or 300D and I have the eos digital solution disk ver.6.0 but I cannot connect the camera to the eos remote capture. I have a Compaq with windows 7 home premium. Any advice it'd help me a lot! I really need to use the live view remote capture but I just can get it.
Yeah, try this with a Nikon (good camera, notwithstanding); you'd have to buy their software to do this with their cameras. The netbook is a good idea, also Lilliput monitors are bigger and cheaper than netbooks, but don't have peaking. Ikan 7" monitors have peaking for around $300.
I have the 8943G with 18+" screen and love the visual quality. I know the wireless iPad can be used in this manner untethered... is there an app that will let the ACER do this wirelessly (if so equipped as mine is) as well?
I can't get this to work. I was able to load EOS Utility on my netbook but when I hook up the T2i I get an error saying "FAILED TO CONNECT WITH CAMERA. CHECK CONNECTIONS". I have looked all over and it seems this problem is VERY common, but none of the fixes I found worked. Can anyone HELP???
I have run some performance tests on the PC's I had around my house. The results can be seen by searching for "Canon EOS Utility Performance Test" on YouTube. (I wasn't allowed to post a URL for some reason.)
I have successfuly done this on the 7D with an older Pentium M laptop, however the laptop I believe is not quite fast enough to keep up the frame rate. The question I have is what is the cheapest smallest netbook that can handle a good frame rate for video?
What about nikon like my D90? I tried camera control pro, but that blacked out the live view monitor(on the camera). Will eos software work with nikon? Are there any other softwares that do not black out the live view? Thanks in adv.
Do you have any idea whether this will work with the 550d(Rebel t2i)? I do know the T2i does not support HD live recording output to a monitor, so I wonder if the same would apply to a laptop.
Two quick questions about this. Would the same port work with one of those USB monitors that some folks use with their desktops? I'm not looking for the functionality, so much as a larger preview screen to ensure out in the field, that the images I'm capturing are as clear as I think they are.
Also, do you know if anyone has come up with a way to hook up an iPhone to the camera? I have an iPhone 4 and while the screen isn't much bigger, the resolution would be loads more helpful in preview.
Now 'THAT' is what I'm talking about. Looking after the film makers pockets, and not trying to RAM new expensive toys down our throats, like other people! Well done Tony! : )
thanks heaps for this mate. was looking at going out and buying a view finder unit and 10" HD monitor. all up would of cost 1K+
after watching this vid installed the software on my netbook and is working fine with my 7D camera. now i just need one of those cool eye things like you have and a way to mount the netbook on rails.
Thanks so much for this post! I had no clue I could do this. Now I can shoot my tutorials and interviews without having to worry about getting a new monitor. Thanks man!
I've been reading all about the Canon DSLRs (i'm getting a T2i this weekend) and you are the only person who has mentioned this technique. Good stuff!
so, quick dumb questions: 1, can u use that software as a shutter remote? and 2, do you think the lag on the monitor is because maybe your laptop is a bit slow, or is that just how it reacts with every computer? Thanks man. Luvin the videos.
Very valuable info ! Thank you for sharing. I heard when outputting video from the HDMI i get only SD resolution. Is that true ? Is there anyway to output full HD for monitoring while I am recording ?
I have windows 7 64bit trying to connect with pc connection to my Canon Eos rebel xt. It will not allow me to use the remote shooting mode. Any suggestions on how i can fix this? thanks in advanced
this would be sooooo nice for a jib! I can totally see myself having a 22" High def monitor wired to my macbook pro on the back of my jib. so awesome, i just need a 7d!
Is using the laptop as a monitor, accurate enough for pulling focus? I would like to have a camera operator and a focus puller but I would need them to both see the image in enough quality to preform their respective jobs. The other question is, is any monitor good enough to pull focus on the 5D with it's SD output during recording.
Hi. Thanks for a great video. I would like to use this on my laptop too. I see that Canon has updated their software Version 2.8.1 /Released on 01-03-2010 with the following remark: "The Movie recording standby button on the Remote Live View screen has been eliminated for better operation." Have you updated to 2.8.1. and how does that update affect usability when it comes to filming with the camera?

This is a great video! In this case, I wonder if it's possible to use the iPad as well? That will replace any IKAN, Manhattan, etc those HDMI monitor out there in the future! Furthermore, the iPad is useful for other purpose when it's not stuck on the rig.
Welcome any clue or discovery from you guys out there.
i wonder how did you manage to have the picture showing on the lcd screen(live view) while connecting the camera through the usb cable, because when ever i activate the usb connection i loose the live-view picture !!!
Why did you choose the 5D Mark II over the 7D? I'm torn between the two, but my wallet would like the 7D much more :D. I do mostly action sports so having something light and mobile is ideal.
Thank you for this video. I hadn't installed the EOS software yet, but now I'll give it a try, as it will make monitoring and camera control easier if you are recording alone.
Did you use a longer USB cable than the one which came with the camera?
Also, using the software, I'll still have the composite output signal, so I could feed another monitor at the same time?
Can you hook up to an external monitor via HDMI simultaneously? It seems as if the USB disengages my HDMI signal when I plug it in to use with EOS Utility...
hi im planning on getting a netbook to use as a video monitor for my 7d can i inquire about the installation procedure in detail... thanks this a lot of help!
Good Job Tony!!!! I've got to film some testimonials this weekend so I'm definitely going to bring my MacBook along. Keep producing these wonderful & informative shorts. They're youtube gold!
It does shoot very good quality 1080p video. Like I said, there are work arounds you have to deal with, but I'm very happy with the footage I get with it. Check out my Doritos Ad and Jewelry Ads to see stuff I've shot with the Canon 5D MkII.

Very valuable info ! Thank you for sharing. I heard when outputting video from the HDMI i get only SD resolution. Is that true ? Is there anyway to output full HD for monitoring while I am recording ?

Thank you in advance,

Why did you choose the 5D Mark II over the 7D? I'm torn between the two, but my wallet would like the 7D much more :D. I do mostly action sports so having something light and mobile is ideal.
strosse 1 year ago
@strosse I decided vor 5d ecause of the fullframe-sensor and its better performance in grain and rolling shutter.

Thank you for this video. I hadn't installed the EOS software yet, but now I'll give it a try, as it will make monitoring and camera control easier if you are recording alone.
Did you use a longer USB cable than the one which came with the camera?
Also, using the software, I'll still have the composite output signal, so I could feed another monitor at the same time?
thank you for the great tip !!!!

Can you hook up to an external monitor via HDMI simultaneously? It seems as if the USB disengages my HDMI signal when I plug it in to use with EOS Utility...

It does shoot very good quality 1080p video. Like I said, there are work arounds you have to deal with, but I'm very happy with the footage I get with it. Check out my Doritos Ad and Jewelry Ads to see stuff I've shot with the Canon 5D MkII.
