This was nothing more than a sacrificial lamb led to the slaughter. But most celebrated boxer's like Pea started out like this, club fighter's who were game but way out-classed. It wouldn't do for any Olympian boxing gold medalist to lose his first bout. The business of world professional boxing is business.
This is a Pernell style ass-whooping of the highest caliber. I remember Pernell walking thru the olympic fights in much the same way...That's how far I go back fellas.
i think floyd is just as slick but quicker than pernell was. floyd has the type of defense that can be tought....the way pernell avoids punches is something you can't teach that
@sn113083 yeah Mayweather's defense is a little more conventional Pernell's is like nobody elses. I think their speed is equal. Mayweather more power though for sure.
Farrain Comeaux was 9-0-0 when he faced Pete. Do you think you will ever see a highly touted Olympian face that kind of record in today's game? No. Most of the guys off of the '08 team will be fighting bums with 13-25-7 records untill there 20th fight. Pete technically destroyed this poor dude. He frustrated him with his D early on, rendering Comeaux over aggressive, and then picked him apart with clean, accurate counter punches. Can somebody PLEASE post Whitaker/Trinidad?
The beginning of something great. Sweet Pea is the greatest lightweight in the history of the sport. With the exception of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pete has the best D anyone has ever seen as well. The guy didn't lose a fight until he fought "Tito", who was almost half his age, twice his size, and only after Pete had been smoking crack. In my opinion, Pernell beat De La Hoya. But, De La Hoya held his own and being the up and coming savior of the sport, I can't really argue with the official verdict.
2nd best defense, look at willie pep, you need to know the history behind the sport and its godfathers. just have a look at him then come back to me. cheers.
really?! after 241 fights, 229 wins, only 11 losses and 1 draw, Pep boxed a total of 2017 rounds in the 241 bouts during his 26 year career, a considerable number of rounds and fights even for a fighter of his era. to sweet peas 46 fights 40 wins with 4 loses 1 draw and 1 nc. im telling you the records because it shows how much experience and obvious raw talent each boxer had, as well as how long they had to do it for, therefore in one sense pep had a better defense, sweet pea is amazing but....
yer ur rite, the guy had the ultimate comeback, going back to be champion and beating saddler who would make mince meat out of most featherweight champs today, also pep is the only boxer ever! to win a round without throwing a single punch, he even picked the round before the fight too, he was amazing, but you are correct sweet pea did move up in weight as pep did not, but back then remember there were fewer weight classes which meant a jump to another would put a huge strain on a boxers body
fair enough dude, everyones entitled to their own opinion, but yer they are the best defensive boxers ever, i think wat it mainly came down to was instinct and also having no fear of being hit, to have styles like those 2 would mean if something went wrong they wud be prepered to tek one in the face
whitaker showed when he got old and couldnt rely on defense how tough he really was against tito trinidad...,Mayweather has the best defense sine whitaker retired...
Oh, but that's what makes it so good. I'd hate to be only able to watch technique this good for 1 round. I could watch him gently light people up all day.
I remember when the HBO team were going nuts in favored of trinidad in his fight with pernell. they said that not even De La Hoya did that to pernell. but pernell was shot when the Tito fight happened. he had no movement, he was flat footed in that fight, he was struguling with drugs. so fuck HBO commentators.
I think his last great performance of Pernell was against a young Oscar, and many people believe he won that fight.
What do you mean what happened to his game? He went on to become one of the greatest fighters of all time is what happened. You act as if he dropped off. Do you consider dominating and unifying at LW and WW, winning titles in 4 seperate weight classes, fighting 4 HOF'ers and only legitimately losing to one when he was a shot fighter, reigning as the Pound for pound king in the mid-90's, and proving his place as one of the absolute best pure boxers in the history of the sport, etc. dropping off?
I didn't talk about dropping off, I merely meant that he became more defensive, which is a testament to his versatility. He fought bigger, better and stronger fighters so I guess he had to re-model his style.
He fought defensively early in his career, but as he got into his groove and hit his prime, he started to fight more like this, which is a excellent combination of offense and defense. He fought like this in many fights. Watch his fight with Pineda at 140 pounds, or Jones at 135, or McGirt at 147, etc.
Gotta respect Mayweather and Toney, but Sweat Pea was somethin else..

Unbelievable
I think its very difficult to say who had the better defence. Their styles were very different.
Whitaker didnt fight as often but did move up a few weight classes. .
