Marlon Brando's more than a great actor. He's a visionary and a philosopher. Everything he just said in this interview clip makes beautiful sense. He is also blessed with a great sense of humor.
Did any of you hear that Paramount wanted to remake The Godfather shortly after his death in 2004? 'Supposedly' as a 'tribute'...THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST INSULT EVER! I'm glad Francis Ford Coppola has retained creative rights to the films and blocked and overruled all intentions of any remakes!

Like Erroll Flynn, Brando had a Warm Quality, Natural heroic quality, Studied Life always, some of his performances are so good, they cannot be described.
I say exactly what I mean. People think you're mean when you do. It is darkly humorous that people say they value honesty, but clearly do not. Walking up to a fat guy and saying "you're fat" isn't "the truth", it is mean. Now, when a fat guy says "can you believe people say I'm fat?" and you say yes, THAT is the truth in action. People like it when OTHERS are told like it is, but not themselves. Pathetic. Lying cowards outnumber honest people 99-1 today.
@SimoMcGauneo This is me calm. Why do you say "mate"? Are you an aussie? Do you live on a boat? Why bother with such a weak comment? Lonely, or what?
@kenfo0 No, I'm not an "Aussie". No I don't live on a boat. I didn't find the comment to be weak, was just telling you to do something. Finally, no I'm not lonely, I've very happy thank you for asking buddy! ...What? I'm American now for saying Buddy? Sorry for confusing you, pal.

Christ, what a cynical bastard. Anything he spouts, people listened to and venerated as if he was a fount of knowledge and truth. While I'm certain he was an interesting character, I feel he must have been very difficult to be around and so had to be taken in small doses...
Brando talks about how everybody Acts and he's 100% right, I've always realized this im only 25. it baffles me how this women, Dick Cavett, Larry King don't understand this and argue with Marlon about this when he brings it up....one of the best actors ever, a pioneer of acting, is telling them what acting is...and they're fucking arguing, and telling him no thats not it....seriously i wish Brando would just bitch smack these people and walk away...
I don't believe in such thing as greatest actor of all time or that we could rank them into order they all great in their own way and marlon brando was very interesting individual who had a great sense of life in general
5:55 is the most classic part! That makes Brando who he is and how he stands apart from any other actor. He's more focused on and interested in something other than the thing he's supposed to be focused on at the moment! :D
it's really sad when he says that he is happier than he ever has been in his life----she says he is 65 here, which dates it to 1989[90?]and this was just before the whole period with his son killing that guy[for beating up Brando's daughter].Brando was heartbroken.
marllon brando i =s still in 2010 the bench mark of subtle expressive ane honest screen acting ...since i was a kid 10 yrs old brando was the name i heard in hushed tones of reverance but as i close in on 40 yrs old it astounds me that nobody has exceeded his mark in the western acting world i'm open to any comments to argue the point on more complete screen performances ta ta xx michael

hes a moron and fills people heads with bullshit. girls naturally have the mother's genes, do i need to say more? if a girl refuses to follow her natural path, that is to seek and approach the guy she wants, then i dont want that.
Jesus! This man was sexy, smooth, incredibly talented and spoke at least 4 languages fluently: English, German, French and Tahitian. What was his IQ, 170? I wouldn't be surprised. Brando was the classiest man you could ever meet
One of the most easy-to-listen-to human beings we've ever known. Beside some rather odd editing choices, this interview was classic Marlon: breezy, philosophical, entertaining, challenging, and over way too soon. Sublime, clownish, thoroughly honest.
Brando is the most intriguing character I've ever heard of. His acting was amazing and yet he was so modest about it because he looked at life differently than most people. Definitely his autobiography is the only 100% truthful thing I've ever read.
I'm not in love with him.....really! haha. After reading his autobiography I can claim 100% that if i had lived in his day I wouldn't have wanted him like that because his lifestyle was quite promiscuous lol... now stop stalking me on youtube =p
@Joekirby06 I don't remember the author but the book was entitled: "Songs My Mother Taught Me" and it was an excellent insight into the life and thoughts of Brando.
@shainahasnousername I'm reading it right now and I agree. He isn't trying to portray himself as right or justify his career decisions. Had he been raised in a remotely functional family he would never have gone into acting. A line of work like that was a waste of his genius
@shainahasnousername Actually it;s not 100% true. He lied about certain things to protect people's images. Like that Stella Adler, Carlo Fiore, etc, etc.
every answer, he took his time.... he thought about it. he was honest. in every interview, he spoke slow, calm, intellectually. his memories are sincere, like every smile, every laugh. he was an actor, but acting wasnt him. very honest, classy-nobullshit man. reminds me of my grandfather... very down to earth. RIP Marlon
what an idiot.. "do you know why", after he just explained that he didn't know.. i'm thankful that this interview is here though, for us all to see and learn from, and his autobiographie is another great book, for any of you that haven't read it.. random house is probably minting money off it though

seriously, its the same thing with the larry king interview...its like they dont want to comprehend his honest philosophy or what hes really saying, and just play the media's devil advocate.
For him it was obvious that acting is something we all could do and that it was a profession just like any other. It wasnt amusing to him and he didnt really want to waste time talking about it.
During interview in 1973 he've mentioned that it's all about bissines. Now he've changed his mind saying that If would of done it just for the money it would be a waste of time.
No the thing is, back then in 73 he was pretty young and the whole movie bissines was the money bissines and he worked like a bee.Now when the life is coming close to the edge he thinks that he did it just to enjoy life?!Thats kinda funny to analize.
Jup. But to fully understand why people think that way is because the society and media tells you daily how you are supposed to look, what you are supposed to like and whats ugly and not. People dont dare to live their own life, they want to fit in no matter the age. And it has been like that for ages. And thats how Society works and the people who choose to live in it. Just take a look at the media Image they made out of marlon. Nonsense.
seriously hes such a brilliant man, he is one of the most interesting offstage personas and i love hearing his thoughts on life...he has such an honest and ethical approach to life.
I was looking at Marlon here thinking that he looks, at this age only, really, a little like Peter Boyle and remembered that he and John Belushi did the dueling Brandos on Saturday Night Live.
ha ha the letterman face is hilarious. it's wonderful how he is disconnected with the peripherals of an actor's life. it's endearing to see him living a life of his own and not that of his onscreen personna. he is real and detached from his craft. the critics were assholes not to realise that.
I no shes the interviewer haha but thanx for pointing that out.....yer its good how she lets him speak his mind but the facial expressions she gives during the interview shit me
I bow my head in front of him for such modesty! It is indeed the sickness of not only America but probably the downside of human nature to categorize people instead of just enjoying the life the way Brando did.
Brando could really be a genuine asshole. He won't answer a direct question. Sometimes he is just joking but, other times he is just being difficult. He was possibly the greatest actor of our time. But he didn't seem to respect his craft. And he didn't appreciate how much his fellow actors respected him.
i think he could appreciate the fact that he was respected but i think it bothered him that no one ever saw the job of say joe the plumber as important as being an actor. acting isnt real, its make believe but if the plumber doesnt come your toilet doesnt flush. he was real and its sad that no one wanted to be real with him for maybe it might have made for less awkwardness. he was a great human. despite all i think he loved life, acting was just one facet of it like sneezing.
In most interviews, Marlon seems reluctant to talk about his work, but this interview is an exception. Its one of my favorite interviews with him. Marlon Brando - one of the best actors of all time...if not the best actor of all time.
Marlon Brando's more than a great actor. He's a visionary and a philosopher. Everything he just said in this interview clip makes beautiful sense. He is also blessed with a great sense of humor.

She kept interrupting him when he got into interesting thoughts like predestination....wanting him to talk Hollywood gossip.
And when he does his funny imitation of Letterman she looks like she has no clue! "Dave doesn't do that"....
When this was re-shown due to popular demand they cut out the parts where he mocks Hollywood producers.
And what have we got now? Tom Cruise and his Scientology.

lavkachudes 2 years ago
Youre reading in to much of what he says. Its obvious the question is not really something hes 100% sure about.
nils4545 2 years ago

Nonsense.

I was looking at Marlon here thinking that he looks, at this age only, really, a little like Peter Boyle and remembered that he and John Belushi did the dueling Brandos on Saturday Night Live.

The greatest screen actor of all

Marlon barndo His the best actor of ever
resinfa 3 years ago 3
ha ha the letterman face is hilarious. it's wonderful how he is disconnected with the peripherals of an actor's life. it's endearing to see him living a life of his own and not that of his onscreen personna. he is real and detached from his craft. the critics were assholes not to realise that.

virgin4life23 3 years ago 2
so rude to the ppl she is interviewing i mean and the way she looks at marlon, mole.... and what is wrong with larry king? he is da champ
stellamairs 3 years ago
i don't see how she's rude but ok lol. larry king interrupts ppl unlike connie chung (the interviewer here), lets marlon speak his mind.
virgin4life23 3 years ago
I no shes the interviewer haha but thanx for pointing that out.....yer its good how she lets him speak his mind but the facial expressions she gives during the interview shit me
lindakel14 3 years ago
no problem :)
& yea i see what you mean about her facial expressions lol.
virgin4life23 3 years ago
I bow my head in front of him for such modesty! It is indeed the sickness of not only America but probably the downside of human nature to categorize people instead of just enjoying the life the way Brando did.

I love Brando his work was just amazing I'm a particularly big fan of The Wild One.
XxVespaBebopxX 3 years ago 4
One of the reasons I love Marlon so much is because he didn't take acting seriously. He really did understand the insignificance of life.
Tim the dog is ace. Marlon was a great animal lover.
lojay23 3 years ago 7
Brando could really be a genuine asshole. He won't answer a direct question. Sometimes he is just joking but, other times he is just being difficult. He was possibly the greatest actor of our time. But he didn't seem to respect his craft. And he didn't appreciate how much his fellow actors respected him.
ppaulst 3 years ago
i think he could appreciate the fact that he was respected but i think it bothered him that no one ever saw the job of say joe the plumber as important as being an actor. acting isnt real, its make believe but if the plumber doesnt come your toilet doesnt flush. he was real and its sad that no one wanted to be real with him for maybe it might have made for less awkwardness. he was a great human. despite all i think he loved life, acting was just one facet of it like sneezing.

In most interviews, Marlon seems reluctant to talk about his work, but this interview is an exception. Its one of my favorite interviews with him. Marlon Brando - one of the best actors of all time...if not the best actor of all time.

greatest actor ever! good interview....shame about the interviewer tho..she has no clue! i love brando
