That's the only way this could have worked, unless he went in and somehow removed the trips which won't let the car start unless the clutch is out, and then somehow manually dropped the clutch before leaning in and starting it, which, judging by the fact that this is a Toyota Yaris (Vitz to Japanese and Europeans), I doubt he knew how to do. I'd even be surprised if he knew what a clutch is. :D
