Drummers have a price to pay. They set the foundation to let others fly free. It happens time and time again. When the feel is perfect the star shines. The drummer must know within himself were the credit resides initially and be at peace with their place. Thankfully Steve Gadd does get public credit for the groove he sets. Many drummers, unknown drummers, rarely do. It's up to them to feel the internal satisfaction. I've learned that lesson and am at peace with it. Bless Steve Gadd.
@johnnyzing This is a perfect analysis of professional drumming. I totally agree. My satisfaction as a drummer comes from knowing that I help create the atmosphere for people to express their talent on other instruments. Thanks for the insightful comment.
wow...such great music...nothing like it! Steve Gadd..Michael Brecker..Richard Tee....Paul Simon....what a band...what energy..Thnx for posting this video...how can I get this whole concert??
@rustysexton Yes. That's Chris Botti on trumpet & Michael Brecker on sax. They were part of Paul's touring band back in the early 90's. You can see them in Paul's "Concert in Central Park" video as well.
Almost perfect- this is in my "ALL TIME TOP 5 TUNES OF MY LIFE." One of the first things I can remember is music seeping through- sometimes Paul Simon (thanks Mum x ). I always thought he sang "mean guitar" instead of "rhythm guitar"- isn't it funny how misheard lyrics stick with you for about 30 years, til you find out what he really said! The only thing that upsets me about this post is what one of the percussionists is wearing, please refrain from looking at him.
man, why musicians like paul are so rarely nowadays. there are some good ones but most of them are not that charismatic and so talented and fantastic like paul and others from his generation.
...mmm so good to see the man smile, guess thats what happens when you are so 100% happy with what you are doing so enjoyingl, along side other wonderful musicians in what seems to be an intimate venue, for an appreciating NOT stadium audience.
My son took me to Paul's concert at Pepsi Arena at Albany,NY,,BY FAR the best concert I ever saw..6 Drummers,wow-- I saw "old" lawyers and doctors up dancin'
in the asiles..He rocked.saw him at S.P.A.C. couple years later --audience
loved him-HE loved US..you could tell.
The Inside concert was way better although he did come out again and again in response to our applause at
@jabrother When I was a kid, my mom used to bring me to every Paul Simon concert that came to town. She'd always point out "Mr. T" on piano, and in some small way, we shared in the sorrow of his death the next time Paul came to town without him. Rest in peace, Richard Tee. We loved you.
oh my fucking god, oh my fucking god. i love this song so much. i saw paul simon one time and i was tripping BALLS. i was tripping to hard that my entire body was racked with pain, but it was still awesome. just imagine: you're tripping way, way too hard but still having a good time. if i had been anywhere else i would have had an awful time but just because of steve gadd i was able to ride it out and have fun. gadd is godd.
Trop, vraiment trop génial. J'adore Paul mais il manquait quelqu'un qui a un style incomparable dans sa façon de jouer de la guitare. Très discret, certes mais présent. C'est Eric Gale.
I love Art, but I can understand Paul going it solo. It would be hard to incorporate Art's voice on a song like this, or on an album like "Graceland".
Cool to look at different time periods of Paul and this particular song. Tempo change, his voice changes, different groves but Steve is always smokin!!!!!
yeah but that would mean that i would go from ripe old age of 15 to the rapidly declining age of 63. i guess i would have all of the memories which maybe could make it worth it. but im hoping to work my way up to steve gadd caliber one day ayway....
I love this song..."Then I learned to play some mean guitar, I was underage in this funky bar, and I stepped outside to smoke a J. And when I come back to the room and everyone just seem to move and I turned my amp up and I began to play...and it was late in the evening and I blew that room away."
Jeez how many people are in this band? It's enormous!
Very good song too...the late great Michael Brecker on sax if I'm not mistaken.
By the way, for those who might be interested, Steve Gadd is using a Mozambique, an afro-cuban groove which is really cool to play. (Actually Tommy Igoe tells you about this in one of his videos in youtube). And what are those sticks he's using???
As good as it gets. The musicians having a good time laughing and smiling at each other. I could watch Gadd and listen to this song forEVER.

I believe that it was right after he saved the pussy cat in "Alien".
I always thought highly of Yaphet after he saved the pussy cat... Evidently Paul did as well...
It would have been mildly ironic* if Paul had asked him to play violin, rather than guitar.
* only mildly ironic, since catgut isn't actually made from the innards of felines.
