@marralis Alex is phenomenal but Orbin has 7 or 8 years more experience. We'll have to see later on. I'll say this though, I can usually follow what Alex plays, even if I can't perform it cleanly myself. Travis, however, does things that I just can't get my head around, let alone attempt.
@sabiankid11 The only thing they have in common is the symmetrical build of their drumsets. Other than that, I don't see how Alex has ripped off anything from Mr. Orbin. The style of music they play is very different.
@sabiankid11 Mike Mangini also plays this way, so would you say that they both ripped this style off from him? No, they just developed it and learned from what they have seen / been inspired from.
Your drum style reminds me of Travis Orbin so much. You play more heavy stuff but your both amidextrous (however you spell it) you both do a lot of snare accents, and it sounds amazing.
It's the ghost notes of your snare patterns perfectly accented mixed not beating blast beats to death is what really sets you on a different standard of drummers. Mainly you and some of Orbin has inspired me to not care about my speed but care about my drumming. Your stuff is really hard to cover
What.the.heck. Amazing. Especially for the fact that you feel just as comfortable with both feet being dominant. And those gravity drops. Ahhh. Awesome job.
How can you possibly play with marching sticks? The MS4's are the heaviest drumsticks I know of! Haha, you must absolutely destroy drumheads with those things.
@prestonskatefreak1 at that part he is playing patty-fla-flas with the ghosts on the snare and the accents on each of his two hi-hats with the basses playing straight 16ths under them.
Hey Alex, I need your help, can't decide between Axis longboards or Demon Drives!! You made the switch so any insight would be great, Oh yeah and this vid is mad, you kill it bro!! regards :)
Well alex, you've proved yourself again. You sure should be listed with "the big ones", Kollias and others. I just can't figure out what the hell's going on in your mind while you play, and where do you get your ideas for this kind of playing! Every video, one by one beats the crap out of me. Love your playing! Cheers.
could you explain me the sticking for blast beat from 3:14? i love that blast and i can watch it lot of times. and the knowing look after that, haha:D
@blastbeatsj I find myself dealing with the same dichotomy, depending on my mood, this stuff inspires to get to jam room, or just drop my sticks and quit playing altogether.
hey man, you think you could post a video of you playing something without a song in the background? cause id love to hear what the drums and how the mics sound just by themeselves ya know! if you could that be awesome!
Hey alex, I'm not sure if you know this or not, but from your video statistics, your getting tons of videos pouring from europe. hit that button next to the view count!
Since you use sticks from the Vic Firth Corpsmasters series, have you ever tried the Tom Aungst reverse teardrop sticks? I, personally, would never use any marching style stick on a set, but I feel that they do get a deeper sound (while still pretty crisp) and better flow all around than the ones with pointy(ish) heads. Or are they a bit too big for your taste? I guess I just love using sticks with rounded heads, that's why I use Vater Fusion and the Pro-Mark Tom Freer signature sticks.
I still do, I was just trying something different for this session. I used Vic Firth Tom Float's.
I was hoping to switch from the Magnum's as they're expensive and destroy everything, but these sticks didn't quite cut it for me; I wasn't as happy with drum sounds using these lighter sticks. Live and learn I suppose, I'm currently back to playing Magnums.
@mdterps1042 you should try out the vic firth lee beddis's. they're not as crazy destructive as the magnums, but they're still beefy and get a great sound quality. I'm honestly still surprised that you and travis are using magnums, considering there aren't even dci drumlines who use them, and they have to play over 80 horns to a far-away audience haha. but I guess it's mostly feel, and it makes sense with the music you play.
Niiiice!! :D:D More of this stuff please! It's such an inspiration! :) Btw why do you say this song have a tempo of 115 BPM and not 230 BPM? I know the latter is just twice as fast, but is there any particular reason to why you say 115 and not 230? (When I play I always think that I'm playing 16ths to 230 rather than 32nds to 115). Nice playing anyways! :) Love your ambidextrous playing style! ^^ Cheers
Sick man! So tight! I notice you use pearl demon drives, did you notice an instant improvement with speed/control after switching to direct drive kick pedals? I currently have DW 9002's and am thinking bout trying some direct drive pedals
@jerrydilger everything about it. i could never get my slave pedal to feel right because of the lag on the 9002 but there is no lag with these. whatever i play, the pedal plays and its awesome. you can make it feel however you want. they are amazing bro
