This may sound like a stupid question, I haven't had much experience with pedals, but what would happen if you had two distortion pedals on at one time?
Hi I am playing with two pedals very often, but not with those two. They are both high gain pedals, the result will be no definition and way too much noise and gain. You can use two drive pedals, but the first needs to be booster type (like Xotic BB for example)
Which would you recommend to be used through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with a Strat and likely a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge? Maybe a PAF Pro, hell maybe it wont even be one of those ha. The Riot sounded brighter here but the Strat and Hot Rod Deluxe are brighter sounding (likely), would that open up the brownie a bit more? I really like what you got out of the riot here!
I really wish more people who comment on videos like these would realize that most pedals need to be heard at gig volumes to truly be appreciated....either way GREAT demos and f**king killer playing too! Please keep 'em coming!
I really disagree with you on many things you write, but of course, you have your opinion, I have mine :-) When it comes to matters of taste, people have very different opinions.
Thanks for the review man!I have a 1976 Fender Bassman which is a clean amp and i need a drive channel.Do you think Brownie could be it?is it possible to use it as a main drive channel and then add a tube screamer to push it over the edge for solo? Thanks for the answer!
@koliok Wicked licks dude!!! I have two 50 cal +'s one combo and one blond head. Love your tones. You should post your eq & knob settings. Keep on rockin!!! Thanks, Derek
PART1: Couldnt decide based on videos, so I bought them both to try. Here's my experience using my equipment, ears and opinions: First the Brownie. Despite the "brown sound" marketing, there's a lot of overlap between the OCD 'overdrive' and Brownie 'distortion'. CON - Brownie isnt as transparent PRO - Brownie tone control is more consistent as you increase the gain. Like most distortions, it works ok with strats, but much nicer with humbuckers.
@phillyfrankb PART2: I was disappointed in the riot -a little noisey, switch is a little eh, and more saturation than I like from distortion. There's better, more versatile distortions to be had for less of my hard earned dollar - e.g. son of hyde, full drive, box of rock. Same with the brownie -better/cheaper overdrives are the OCD, and the dalelectro drive v1 (now called transparent drive v2. btw -neither sound like a cranked power starved marshall lead. both have a "pedal" kind of sound.
@phillyfrankb Whoa?! Lots of mix ups here! Son of hyde is a full on distortion, full drive is an overdrive(flatter eq'd screamer type), box of rock is a cranked jtm45 in a pedal and is $199 just like the Riot. ALL of these pedals are aimed at completely different sounds compared to each other and the Riot and Brownie. BTW dano pedal drive v1 is NOT called transparent drive. Dano has CTO and CO-2 which are two totally different pedals. Nice "opinions" though I suppose o_O
@fakeemailbox if you had all the pedals in front of you played through a clean amp (twin), the brownie, OCD(gain&tone cranked) and BoR are all pretty close. Brownie does not sound at all like brown sound in a box. ESPECIALLY not with single coils. I say the BoR is cheaper because you can easily craigs one up cheap. You wont find a Riot on craigs. As for pedals that are more modern voiced, the SoH & Riot, I'll take a $70 used SoH anyday. You can dial in more sounds. Riot has one basic sound.
So much easier to get better gain with humbuckers - wish there were more shootouts with single coil guitars. In my experience, some high gain pedals might have very subtle differences between them when used with the higher gain pickups like the LP used here. But when you try them with an S-type guitar the difference is HUGE - some just go straight to fuzz.
Discovered you yesterday and I'm blown away by the breadth and depth of your playing. You cover a lot of ground very convincingly. I have Dolemite on continual play. I wanted to ask your opinion on the Riot vs Pinnacle. I'm debating purchasing one of the two. Playing strat, tele and paul through modded Lone Star Boogie (2x12) and the only pedal I'm currently using before the amp is the BB MD and I'd like a pedal to pick up where that leaves off. Thanks.

Riot $200 & Brownie $135 so which do I buy? I'm after early EVH sound and I can afford either one so which would you recommend? I currently have an OCD n luv it and I want add a 'badder' pedal for more versatility. Need opinions ... Thx.
You should definitely go after the Brownie if need EVH type sound. The Riot is great, but more modern and aggressive sounding. If you need more gain and EQ options, you can try also Wampler Pinnacle.
I bought a Brownie after watching this demo. The Riot seems great, but I like the more 'vintage' voice and warmth of the Brownie. I have had it for a few months now and totally love it.
Awesome demos and great playing! I own the Riot and love it. Do you know of any pedals in this size that will work well with a soft sounding clean amp (e.g. Mesa Lonestar Classic) to provide a sort of Mesa Mark IV tone?
great demo thanks. went out and got the suhr riot based on this video no regrets excellent pedal....not quite got the levitation thing off yet though lol !
Thanks, that depends a lot on the amp used, I tend to like the Brownie more on brighter sounding amps, the Riot is a bit more aggressive, so I like it better on softer sounding clean channels.

Like both pedals. Never heard the Suhr before. I like the darker Brownie and have just lashed out and got one ( GOOD VALUE FOR THE MONEY) I will try the Suhr in time. Guessing that the the Suhr may give a more defined postion in the mix" in a my gig situtations" ( less mid / bottom end freq,) But its all about matching the gear and mixing to the room your in????
These pedals both sound awesome. The Riot sounds more scooped and modern to my ears and the brownie darker more vintage and generally browner. I'm wondering which of these would suit a Strat and Fender amp combination. I'm thinking the Brownie as it's more mid rangy. What do you think.?
Hi Koliok , good idea compare those pedal together. I have both and I love both equal. The Riot has more punch and presence and the Brownie has more mid booster and the real "Brown Sound" Van Halen Sound. The Browniewas the winner Nº 1 in Van Halen Sound. If you like the early Van Halen tunes that`s is your Pedal. The Riot does not Sound like a pedal , it sounds like the durty channel of PT 100 or OD 100 SE+ Custom Audio Amplifier. I hope it could help someone to decide which one buy.
The HT-Dist (the one I have) gets more compressed than the Riot when the gain is maxed. I like it a lot, but use it mostly when I want to get metal like sound, and Riot (IMO) is more about classic rock stuff.
@koliok Thanks for the reply. your a very versatile player, have a great chops, and have a great sense of tone. sooo... can i add you as a friend? thanks man
Cool demo. Brownie sounds like a hot rod plexi, and the Riot sounds like a hot rod 800!
