  • videogames with acquarios game

  • I respect your opinion but in mine your review sucked, a 7.5/10

  • Eh, it's a solid RPG.

  • Eternal Sonata is one of the better games this generation, especially in the rpg genre

  • After years of strictly playing American RPG's (Morrowind and Oblivion mostly, which are years worth of gaming on their own, especially with mods), I started back with JRPG with Final Fantasy 12. The story was pure bullshit, and now I wait for Skyrim.

  • ugh.. the voice acting is horrible in this game.. the male sounds too old for his appearance and the female sounds too young for her appearance.

  • This is PS3's only 3 player off-line co-op RPG that doesn't use some type of lame ass split-screen... The exact setup I was looking for. But, the game just looks too gay for us to play it. Has anyone tried 3 player co-op on this?

  • I think you're just too much of a simpleton to enjoy this story... Also, no mention of the deep, musical elements and mispronounced names... I have to question if you're even qualified to review this...

  • i hate it how the PS3 and the xbox 360 both have different features =/

cause i have the xbox 360 version which does not have the features that the PS3 version has =/ =/

  • My one critique of your review is do not use the word everybody/everyone, because that implies to people who read/listen to a review that everyone feels the way you do.

  • ahhh I have to chime In here... I just got this today never really cared for games like these because i never game them a chance. I only played 1 hour and I was blown away by the graphics so far and the game feels fluid... I take this reviewer does not like the fucked up rpgs like these but hey he tried... i am odd guy so I like odd games and really playing a character who is dieing In a dream world Is fun and dark... So count me In! I can see why people love and hate it.

  • i don't even think you ever played this game. this game is a good game. best rpg? no. unique? yes. a game for me? yes. for you? no.

  • Really? Only a six out of ten? Current games are, to me, underwhelming, and I wouldn't give any of the games to come out in recent years a perfect ten. However, I really did enjoy this game, and most of your review seemed to be trying to find problems that weren't really there. This game is great, anyone looking for something that isn't just another first person shooter or sandbox game should really pick this up.

  • this game is impossible.

  • A little more depth and challenge in the combat would've gone a long way as well as better, more mature dialogue. I feel they really underestimated the intelligence of gamers with the game's over simplified story and dialogue.

  • every negative comment here seems to have been made by a bitchy 3-year old... dudes calm down its just a review if you dont like it get off his back he didnt do anything wrong he just gave his opinion and he said HIS opinion is 6/10 not YOURS and he repeated it like 10 times ITS AN OK GAME JUST NOT HIS PARTICULAR TASTE!!!! so if youre looking for a fight find a good argument... -.-

  • looks like a great rpg game.

  • I don't like your review style, because you assume that everyone feels the same way as you.

You use terms such as "no one", "everyone", and "anyone" too frequently.

  • @Josqpiercy i think thats a speech pattern not a way of saying literally that everyone feels like himself...

  • ..Playing it now. Just made it to chapter 4. It's starting to get really interesting. Graphically it is very good looking. The story line is very crazy, but all jrpgs are. The battles can be VERY hard if you don't learn to fight properly. But you get the hang of it, and best of all you can get it for like under 20$ right now.

  • good review. thanks for sharing you`re opinion about this game.

  • @stralsundpatriot wrong, his opinion was fail.

  • hey can you change your characters clothes in this like there look?? cuz i cant in xbox but in some of these scenes polkas clothes look differint

  • I think someone that is very into philosophy and similar areas would find the game quite interesting...the characters makes point about many things which would make a philosophical individual find this game extreamly interesting. I understand the points you've argued, I don't agree with them but I can see where you'd get them from.

  • I loved this game on 360, I still regret selling it when I sold my 360. Good thing the PS3 version is $17 now.

  • @thatguyontheright1

where was it $17 new? I paid $21.50 for it on amazon recently.

  • @ValkyrieSteffy I was think about get into the RPG genre and I was wondering should I get this game...I don't really wanna reply on the review

  • Hilarious review, I had to stop though as I want to try this game and don't want you spoiling this epicly fucked up story.

  • Hmm, people watch reviews to see whether or not its wroth checking out... sooo why are all these fucking losers here bitching about your opinion about it, after they have obviously played it themselves. Is it that important everyone in the world agrees with you? Go get fucked anonymous douchebags that need others to agree with them so badly.

  • See, my biggest problem with the game is the fact that, though the use of Chopin as a hook at the beginning of the game was good, they basically put him to the side for the majority of the game. I mean, they don't even explain why he ends up following the party. He even outright said that he didn't care what happened to everyone at first. So if he didn't care, why did he go? It would have been so amazing if the plot actually followed him and focused on his story.

  • Kinda looks like Holic 2.. but made into a game xD

  • Do you have a nasal problem? Thanks for running through your "idea" of the game, instead of reviewing simple game components. You practically "may or may not"(taken right from your dialogue) ruined giant parts of the game for people. Maybe next time, add a spoiler alert to the title, or at least the description. So as for my review on you as a creditable source, "Chris" i think you should "NEVER" do game reviews, leave it to the professionals, they get paid for that kind of thing, obviously.

  • @madbustinmatt but professional reviews suck >:/

  • With respect, you really don't know what you are talking about. You expect this game to be straight-forward when its not. The story is darkness disguised in a colourful world and the ending is meaning because of the META-PHYSICAL value. You tend to crone on about the story without my analysis of the wonderful battle sequences and perfect pace. You must be a personal with very little knowledge of philosophical values.

  • *cough* Japanesse rpg's rock.

    sorry. this review fails.

  • wow some people are really angry about your review it seemed okay to me

  • I like Polka's black outfit on ps3

  • I enjoyed this game, one of my favorite RPGs. I agree with a lot of things you said here, but your comments lean toward someone that doesn't enjoy JRPGS making this review feel a little harsh. I'm not knocking your opinion of the game, but I feel you described this game as unenjoyable which I disagree with. I'd give this game a 7.5 instead of a 6, but I'd ask a person to rent it first since it may not appeal to everyone. Btw, Polka's blue outfit looks cool, is that only in the PS3 version?

  • thanks man!

  • Thx~

  • This game is awesome it deserve more then a 6 out of 10.

  • @onlydadopest Did you read the description?

  • I respect your opinion, however i do think that most of your comments were....not mature. I think its brilliant the idea of chopin being a character and how he gets to interact in this game. I believe that the central plot of the game is very genuine and that the game itself is art. The battle system, the story plot, the character selection, all of them i believe that in general, taking in to account everything, is unique. I do believe that one does need to have creativity to come up with this.

  • this reviewer totally sounds like christopher mintz-plasse

  • this game is art for me so go fuck yourself

  • I agree with you man. This game is beautiful and underrated.

  • @vitalyps3 This guy has a different opinion then you so maybe you should follow your own advice? :)

  • What a ..... review. It sucks so hard....

  • Frederick "f*cking" Chopin? And you're talking about mature?! Grow up dude!

  • YOU SUCK! oh well.

  • omg u call that a review ...its just all procastinating!! be profesional if u wanna review a game to someone.

  • I thought that it seemed like a pretty fair review, didn't touch on everything but bottom line is that yea it's a generic j-rpg with pretty graphics and which features many of the common flaws of other j-games and movies that share the same visual style.

    - If you're not bothered by that then yea it's probably worth the buy.

  • does he do anything but insult the game?

  • argh, this just kills me, anime, great graphics, awesome music and chopin in one game? and I don't own a ps3!!!!

  • Well, this is also on 360 if you don't own one (that's the original version) but you won't have the extras that are available on this version.

  • well...it IS on the 360 you know?...if you own a xbox or a ps3 by now (since this comment is 4 months old...) do get this game!

it's simply the BEST RPG i've EVER played, this guy is a douche

  • @burps20 Yeah, I do, when the slim version came out, the bigger version became much cheaper so I rushed to the store to get one :D then I spent a month looking for the game 'cause they didn't sell it anymore....:( but I found it :D thank you for giving advice!

  • not a problem =D

so...what do you think of the game so far?

  • the game is good period.

  • Reminds me of FFIX

  • umm... is that polkas outfit throught the entire game? O.o

    i like the red better

  • Why are you so opposed to surrealistic mood and plot? That's exactly what appeals to me about this game. As for vaguely meaningful metaphors, it's called interpretation in art. It seems that the very aspects that make this game so artistic and beautiful are the aspects which you resented and totally failed to appreciate. Your loss.

  • i have the game and i just took me twentyfour hours to win it.

it´s a really funny game but it´s sad that you cant be serenade and cresendo in 360.

but you can be them in ps3.

but it´s really funny to play :)

    i give it a 10.

  • one interesting technical problem:

this is claimed to be a review of the PS3 port yet all the footage seems to be from the 360 version... hmmm......

  • Sadly, I had to use stock footage and that was all that was available.

  • You know what makes games like this infuriating? Just like Lost Odyssey, KIDS! Little.. tiny fucking retard idiot kids are characters in the game. No one wants to withstand the stupid logic of a 10yo. They really make game plots shit the bed, with their sappy bull shit that never makes sense anyways. You know why ff7/8 had great plots? Because the main characters didn't include booger brained monkeys.

If you're going to make an understandable rpg plot, make it on some mature level.

  • it remindes me of blue dragon a little..

  • how? because it's a game? that's about the only thing similar about the two. gimme a break.

  • played the 360 version. its repetitive with all the monsters looking almost exactly alike. the story sucked. but i kinda have to agree that at least it was original which is the reason i tried it. i hated how they seperated the characters into a weak group and strong group during chapters. after i got all the characters i only used claves jazz, falsetto. compared to persona 3 this game is no where near as dark or repetitive. i'd give it a 7

  • ha six stands for suck. this is one jrpg that couldnt suck me in so i let it blow me.

  • wow nice review... yeah graphics was ok... if you like combos with your RPG and block chances.. this is your game

  • hey if u ever have a promotional copy of soul calibur broken destiny plz do review it thanks a lot! oh and yeah plz review final fantasy dessidia if u have the chance thanks!

  • i like the reviewer... hes got good voice XD ermm and he rated y favorite game crisis core a good rating haha nyways yeah i believe he rate games fairly... keep up

  • This game has incredible music, and I also find it interesting that after each chapter, it gives you a history lesson on Chopin and music from him as well. For me personally, I found the game really refreshing because it is really different from the FF series, and RPG's of the like. I do agree with you on the story. I found the "trying to reduce taxes" into "saving the world" was rather too forced. Overall, I liked it.

  • to preface, i just want to say that i haven't played eternal sonata. I'm curious though after watching this review and hearing how you think a lot of elements of japanese story telling is cheesy; how is it that you thought tales of symphonia was emotional by the end? Tales games are drenched in anime cliche's and naievete. It also has simple, exaggerated characters, philosophy or anthropology debates that might make someone younger than 9 think a little, and other anime trappings.

  • I think he over exaggerated the whole review to much. It is a really good game, if you are looking for something different and not the usual Tales or FF RPG's then this a game for you. It has really good gameplay, and I personally liked the story.

  • Encore mode in this game rox!(after you beat the game) it's at least 50 hours of play and combos are awesome.

  • if you played all the characters it wouldnt be so "repetitive" idiot ass man.also if you lvl up you get different moves that's much cooler and there are lots of extra areas in the game like Hero's gate that have to be explored. this guy probably didnt.

  • Do you often get this worked up over opinions on the internet? I gave the game a fair chance, played it until the storyline ending and played a variety of characters (which you kind of have to) and I stand by everything I said in the video.

  • @neverchris i do and i think he's right, don't lay out an opinion on the whole game by only playing small parts

  • @holysnackpack I beat this thing.

  • @neverchris

i agree with gooodkush. maybe you shouldn't review JRPG's. just sayin'.

  • this review guy has no right to judge ES. who the fuk is this nobody ass retard. some unreliable bullshit review nobody cares about so keep playing overrated Final Fantasy

  • Actually I was sent a promotional copy of this game for the sole purpose of reviewing it :)

  • you are right, the game doesn't give you emotions, battles no worthy rememeber, except for the last boss and it's music but, it didn't last long, it would be great if thet had given a more FinalFantasy style

  • you can not be serious. fuckin FF fanboy idiot you never played eternal sonata

  • yes I did, and I spected more from the evil king....and the guy who had glasses

  • their names are count waltz and fuege. you shud have played all of the game parts like mysterious unison and encore i bet you didnt.

  • this is by far the best rpg game out for the ps3

  • 6 out of 10..? are you kidding me? this game is worth a lot more in my opinion, maybe it's not your type or you prefer star ocean or FF, but I'm playing it for a second time now and I don't get bored or anything like that and Shopin in the game was something new, something I've never encountered before, his dream, his music... I would easily give this game 9/10 but yet again I love JRPG :)

  • nice videoreview!!!

  • I thought ES was the best RPG I played on the 360. It was the only thing in the tray when I first got it. Got every achievement and beat it on Encore Mode, but that's me though lol.

  • I'm trying that now, I gotta get the music sheets and I'll be ready for it.

  • I think there are sheets you can only get on Encore so, you'll have to play through it to get everything.

Oh, and that lady pirate (forgot her name) is a bitch on Encore...Just letting you know that.

  • Thanks I figured she would be when she got behind me so fast so I couldn't dodge or counter. And I have a text file of what I need to get left in Encore, I AM READY =D

  • If zero from megaman x was playing this game he would scream

"WHAT THE HELL I AM FIGHTING FOUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • more like

"WHAT THE FUCK AM I FIGHTING FOURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

  • Lol U so mad.

  • this usually the point of JRPGs? If 'grinding's' not preferred by the player, playing it through once would suffice (like you have), but I suppose, a majority of JRPGers/RPGers can enjoy the challenge, and I really do recommend playing the game to others, and even once more through (especially for Encore Mode). : 3

  • The storyline and character personalities may seem a tad repetitive, but as a result, it certainly uses the whole "fairytale" idea to tie it into the dream of a real life person.

The battle system is a nice change of pace, especially since you move from Party Level I to Party Level VI, all of which, engages the player to think more strategically as the game progresses and the enemies become more difficult to kill. Although there isn't much variety in enemies when battling in one location, isn't

  • Ah... How should I put this...

Although I do understand your point of view even after repeating that this ES is an "acquired taste", it seems that the review was quite unfair.

I don't know exactly how much research you said you've done on the game, but if you compare the XBox version with the PS3's; the PS3 version works out most of -though not all, of course- the kinks.

  • hey i like how u do your reviews your funny

  • And by the way.. Eternal Sonata is a good game but not the best game out there. it is definately worth more than a mesely six rating from neverchris or wadever his name was (its worth at least 7.5). When you said the battling got repetive.. its a rpg.. it is repetitive..any rpg is like that.. Probably one of the worst fan-based review ever done.. you dont get any fame from this neverchris.. o-o

PS: your attempts at humour were fruitless, stick to just playing games not reviewing them.. -_-

  • The first thing you're hung up on is the arbitrary numerical score plopped on the end. Wow, such brilliance.

While repetitive battling is an inherent trait the common RPG needs to deal with, a great RPG will commonly manage to keep the fighting feeling fresh regardless. It's been done before but I don't feel Eternal Sonata managed to do this.

  • well for if it has a good battle system i never get feed up of the battles in a rpg

  • I am used to this sort of fan-based video game critics. Dont take these "reviews" seriously as these critics find every sort of negative points about any game and bitch about them. Firstly, there is no perfect game out there but there are masterpieces out there. Whether you like it or not depends on your taste. If you want true reliable reviews of games go and find gametrailers (GT) reviews so they are not biased and can really help decide on your game choices. Dont listen to these critics.

  • Who the hell are you to ride such a high horse? Uh oh, quicksilvergold92 is here to tell it like it is, oh no.

You're right, whether or not a game is good depends on your taste. You are basically saying that videogames are subjective. I shared my subjective views, something that many many many other people often agree with.

Are you retarded or something? I don't recall ever passing ultimate judgment on anything, banishing any games from ever being sold again.

  • lol "smoked up hippi logic"

  • bioshock

  • I don't get what makes his face effeminate. It's anime style drawings...any face without facial hair is somewhat effeminate, it's just because of the fact that faces have 3 or 4 features.

  • First off, you did pronounce Chopin wrong, being Show-pawn. And second, You are totally RACKING on this game, it's one of the most popular, satisfying RPG's our there. I have it for the Xbox 360, but I like Polka's blue and Serenade as a playable in Ps3. Those of you who hate it, just back off, no need to get into comment war with others who are crazy about it. For me, the only downside is the repeated special attack catchphrases. It's my favorite game owned, I've replayed it 3 times already.

  • i like polka w/blue better

  • oh god... you absolutely misunderstood the game's spirit... it IS one of the biggest j-rpg of all times, because of its emotions, mood, etc.

  • I've played the demo of this. The music was AWESOME, but the gameplay and story... Typical of Namco to make something with great music but not that good gameplay...

  • Namco?

  • is it able to change language to japanese like 360?

  • yes

  • Thank you for this review!

  • It's not as if there wasn't very much depth with this game, or that there was anything wrong with that, but everything just seemed easy and shallow, the story was ok, but you don't even learn what the f3%*@ you're doing until 20+ hours in, and at that point, it just doesn't seem worth it. Music was KICK ASS though

  • Chopin is fucking awesome.

  • when is this coming out in the uk

  • i agree with u pangyagirl036

  • I lol'ed

  • You're mean...

  • Forte is Loud music

  • this is one of your best reviews, I like it so much better when you keep it clean and explain your verdict.

  • Nice review, good think I never played it (I have X360 just to point out), because a 6 isn't even worth a $10, 5 day rental to me.

  • I want to play this game so much! But I haven't been able to find a 360 copy anywhere! If I had a PS3 I would of had played this game already.

  • Here are games with storylines that actually make you think. Planescape Torment Deus Ex I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream Killer 7 Silent Hill 2 A Mind Forever Voyaging System Shock 2 Fallout 1 & 2 Star Control II The Last Express I don't mean to sound like a ass here so please don't commit suicide, we had enough of those in the internet.
  • I think this game is great. The story is very difficult to understand, but if you get deeply involved with it (like a book) you will understand it perfectly!

  • Great review; still not sure why you're not more popular. Don't get discouraged! - I'm glad to be a subscriber as your reviews are always witty, on target, and insightful. I also enjoy seeing the funny demonstrations of bugs, bad gameplay, and/or bad storyline.

  • I am so confused. You gave Sonic and the Secret Rings like an 8.5 out of 10. I am really starting to question your review skills. Either that or your math...

  • Is it that far-fetched that I had a more enjoyable time playing Sonic than this?

While Sonic was admittedly shorter, I had an fun whimsical time with it. ES, plagued by its repetitive combat and poorly paced cutscenes, had a lot of boring parts to slog through, making the overall experience a little less thrilling.

Yes, the more simple game wins this time (in my opinion).

  • I gotta agree with this review. After I finished ES I didn't really care. The game had a ton of potential but it's too short, too easy, and REALLY annoying. Watching the characters walk and talk sometimes is just awkward. Most of them were just thrown in there for the hell of it too. There was no real big dilemma like most RPGs have either. It just kind of ends and then that's it. I really enjoyed the battles system but like I said, it was too easy and I didn't even grind. Good review.

  • Did you play the 360 or PS3 version? The PS3 version is more difficult than the 360 version.

  • I know I'm going to get alot of flak and thumbs down for saying this but I really think the JRPG genre needs to grow up. They have ridiculous and silly concepts that they take it too seriously and offer shallow and childish moral ambiguity. The only few JRPGs I've played that strayed away from these cliches were the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series.

  • Yeah. Most JRPGs are flashy and ridiculous. Megami Tensei and Persona stay away from them. But don't forget the Mother (or EarthBound) series! It takes itself with a grain of salt, eschews the swords & sorcery setting for a modern day American city, and the villians are Lovecraftian aliens. Dragon Quest is also a lot more simple, and doesn't have teenage transmen with horrible dress sense

  • Oh yeah, I totally forgot about those two games. They're good JRPGs too. I also forgot to mention Final Fantasy VI, IV, and XII {yes fanboys, I like XII and so does SpoonyOne}. Final Fantasy VI is my favorite in the series and it's way superior than VII, but VII is a pretty good game too and I don't bash it and trash it like some do. Final Fantasy VI has one of the best stories told in a video game period.

  • You also forgot Chrono Trigger. Instead of bashing your head in with repetitive dialouge, it lets your emotions take over. Contact is also a good JRPG.

  • Aw man I totally forgotten about Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Cross is also really good and just as good as it's predesccor. I like a little bit more than Chrono Trigger.

  • This looks to be a game you lend from a friend or something. Not something to buy. nice review, keep em coming.

  • Totally agree with the Tales Of Symphonia comment. That game is so so good. But might try this one too anyway.

  • I was really hoping you'd give this game a good review. I think it's one of the most awesome but overlooked games to come along in many years. I seriously think a 6/10 is insulting to this game.

  • Your best review, you went in depth to things that are actually amusing to mention

  • This was one of my first games on the 360 (I bought it january 2008) next to halo 3. I enjoyed it a lot, but well.. after some time you never touch it again ;)

  • Is this PS3 footage? If so than why are the A, B, X, Y buttons displayed in battle mode?

  • I had to go with stock footage since I recently moved up to HDMI and can't capture that yet... rest assured though they look EXACTLY the same.

  • I was under the assumption this was a fairly good rpg.

  • I think people's expectations for JRPG's these days are in the gutter. It's an ok game though but it didn't blow me away.

  • chris the only reason you think the game is crap when its awesome is because you think your so macho and a big man that you cant give in to ANYTHING cute and sweet

  • Haha I played through this game in its entirety so I don't know what you're talking about.

  • Really? I thought the graphics were stunning.

  • What the hell dude the graphics were amazing.

  • good review chris but the score could of been higher at least 8 but anyway cant wait for your next review ^_^

  • Did they change the color of Polka's clothes for the PS3 version?

  • She does have more clothing options in the PS3 version.

  • I think I might pick this up if I can find it for cheap. Good review man.

  • 6/10? I think it's too low score... 7 or 7+ is more like it. After all it's still one of the better jRPG on PS3 (it's not X360, where you have lot of jRPGs. You need to put that in your final score).

  • One of the better I guess... but I don't want to start grading up because of pity. And the PS3 can still play PS2 and 1 games as well (some models at least).

  • I like playing JRPG's and all but this one doesn't look all that good... it's something about the musical background that turns me off.

  • Will you be reviewing Persona 4, Chris? I'm just asking since you've been reviewing a lot of japanese games and Atlus games. Anyway, this game could have been worse if you think about it. It could have completely ripped off tales of vesperia in a lot of aspects such as combat. The combat in his game looks awkward and...well... the graphics are WAY too colorfull, so I won't be buying this game for Christmas.

  • Persona 4 gets a big maybe as I never even finished 3 and those games take a very long time.

  • Eternal Sonata like Chris said was an ok game (im not a big rpg fan but i still like them)

i have the 360 version it was good and like he said lots of grinding
