He could clinch at first - the rules didn't say otherwise. But they changed that when it became apparent that the thai fighters had a huge advantage. It has to be said that the Japanese really do everythign they can to make their own fighters have as good a chance as possible.

They've changed other rules AND scoring criteria after buakaw's won fights before. Also, limiting the weight class to 1 thai is a fairly big give away as to why they're doing it.
I think that under this rule-set Thais are less a threat then you might expect. Your right, the scoring and rules are not in their favor but then again why should it be in their favour?
K1 was meant to be fast and explosive with the 3 round format.
if k1 allows clinching, not only the thais do it, but also the other fighters who suck at it. or use it to catch their breath many fights would be ugly. no ko's.

I'm not saying its not good for the sport. I know exactly why K1 has been succesful. not the least because it's technically an open tournament.
I personally prefer Thai rules because I see it as the most comprehensive set of striking rules available. I'm not making a comparison of the sports. Well saenchai had his last foreign fight tonight so he wont be at SLAMM. I've seen Nico Verresen fight and spent some time training with him in Thaialand and as much as i like him both in the ring and personally, he should never have been in the ring with saenchai lol. Same with Rob Storey tonight and Liam Harrison last year.

yes the did change the rules cuz Buakaw could approach K1 in a Muay Thai way. It was the logical thing to do, take the clinch out of the equation. Having said that, i dont think it was the clinch that won Buakaw his first K1max title, it was the shear hardness and agression with which he fought, he just went through them like heavy bags. He just never got back to that level.

yeah ok, some fughters have one style and not much variation. maybe holzken is one of those fighters. he matches up good enough against other fighters and you have to say it quite unlucky to keep meeting buakaw early.

Bruce lee was an amazing man, one of the fathers of Kung fu and its philosophy, i have a tremendous amount of respect for the guy. Look At Baukaw's fight record, 400+, Bruce lee was not a live fighter, yes he had some professional fights but NOTHING on the level of this. At the end of the day, as amazing as Bruce was he was glorified by the media, he could not easily beat a pure breed like Buakaw.
I agree with Graftin. I love Bruce, but he was played up so much that most of the things that people say about him aren't even true. So much about him is pure myth. He beat 20-30 men together in his MOVIES like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa all do. Bruce took on tougher opponents? Like who??? Most of those fights are purely speculation and you hear different things depending on who you talk too. Buakaw is right there on television and his records and acheivments are there.

Those are videos of Bruce sparring, not fighting. There are no REAL videos of Bruce Lee in a real fight. I know he has fought people on his sets a couple of times, I was also challenged by a martial artist from the Chinese community in San Fran to make Bruce stop teaching non-Asians, and even Chuck Norris says he couldn't even get a finger on Bruce. However, all those guys were more or less his size and also limited to specific martial arts, not real street fights.

Bruce Lee is a bully growing up and he fights on the street all the time. He has street credit. Sport fighting like muay thai is different. The jab will lose to a finger jab. The roundhouse kick will lose to the jkd scoop kick to the groin. Muay thai will have problems dealing with wrestling, grappling, and submission. Bruce lee will own Buakaw in a street fight. I'm fans of both and Muay Thai and boxing are my two favorites, but this is the truth.

bruce fought against kids..that doesn't make anybody a credible street fighter. nobody knows how good bruce really was or wasn't aside from sparring or kicking a few of his stunt doubles while making a movie. nobody. he is just overblown and too glorified by the media and the "legend" of bruce that people make it sound like he isn't human. bruce admired muhammad ali as a fighter and has said publicly that his biggest fear is fighting a bigger guy who is unrestricted like him in a fight.
During his days, there were a lot of karate champions who would not fight bruce in a streetfight and he would accept any challenges. He has also beaten a muay thai practioner. My teacher taught me mainly boxing and muay thai. The roundhouse kick is indeed a muay thai technique that lands with the shin. The faster front kick straight to the groin will beat the slower roundhouse kick. A poke to the eye will take out any opponent. Check out rich franklin's latest UFC match and you will know.
Although Muay Thai has some weaknesses, I still love muay thai, and then Boxing. Then kyokushin karate, kungfu, jiujitsu, and wrestling. I like martial arts in general. You don't have to agree with me, this is from my experience and this is my opinion. If I must face a life and death situation, my instinct will be to strike the guy's eye and then the groin. If I wanna kick ass, I will use Muay thai, boxing, and kyokushin just to inflict pain and fear.
If a dude from Chinatown in San Francisco (who was trained in only traditional styles) almost beat Bruce (according to him he did beat Bruce, but I don't believe that) then I feel safe in an experienced fighter who may have a style with limitations but knows how to fight with what he has such as Buakaw. Until theres a video of Bruce Lee in a REAL fight with REAL people and not students then its simply anyones guess. We know Buakaw can kick ass at least in a ring.
I mean I agree with what your saying. The philosophy of Jeet Kune Do and Bruce Lee's strategies are absolutely correct. But nobody can say Bruce would wreck any of these guys cause nobody has seen him fight..only demonstrate and spar. Buakaw constantly got robbed. first by the rules then the decisions w/ masato 07, sato 08 twice , then albert k. twice. etc........ Intl. level would do anything or find anyway to beat thai fighters cos their fighters can't achive so.

He could clinch at first - the rules didn't say otherwise. But they changed that when it became apparent that the thai fighters had a huge advantage. It has to be said that the Japanese really do everythign they can to make their own fighters have as good a chance as possible.

They've changed other rules AND scoring criteria after buakaw's won fights before. Also, limiting the weight class to 1 thai is a fairly big give away as to why they're doing it.

I think that under this rule-set Thais are less a threat then you might expect. Your right, the scoring and rules are not in their favor but then again why should it be in their favour?
K1 was meant to be fast and explosive with the 3 round format.
if k1 allows clinching, not only the thais do it, but also the other fighters who suck at it. or use it to catch their breath many fights would be ugly. no ko's.
despite of the reason why they changed the rules, its good for the sport...

I'm not saying its not good for the sport. I know exactly why K1 has been succesful. not the least because it's technically an open tournament.
I personally prefer Thai rules because I see it as the most comprehensive set of striking rules available. I'm not making a comparison of the sports. I merely think the thais are the best all round strikers in the world. Not because they're super at any one thing. but because they excel under looser rulesets.

Anyways, Slamm 6 is comming up end of the month. Holland vs Thailand, with full muay thai rules. to be honest, i think its going to be difficult because the thai come with a very strong delegation.

Well saenchai had his last foreign fight tonight so he wont be at SLAMM. I've seen Nico Verresen fight and spent some time training with him in Thaialand and as much as i like him both in the ring and personally, he should never have been in the ring with saenchai lol. Same with Rob Storey tonight and Liam Harrison last year.

ill repeat it again, K1 isnt Muay Thai. thats why they changed the rules. They didnt want a throwing match or thai oriented fighters going into clinch because they have no other defence against a good K1 fighter with boxing skills, Clincing is ruled to be passive behaviour and thats how it should be in K1, go watch thai boxing if you want to see that.

yes the did change the rules cuz Buakaw could approach K1 in a Muay Thai way. It was the logical thing to do, take the clinch out of the equation. Having said that, i dont think it was the clinch that won Buakaw his first K1max title, it was the shear hardness and agression with which he fought, he just went through them like heavy bags. He just never got back to that level.

about this fight, i think Buakaw fought Nicky in a smart way, little risk for injury or Ko. i can assure you, that he didnt fight like this becus he wanted to be friendly. but yeah, he took him to school, i hope Holzken learns from this cuz he's a very good fighter with a 64-8 record who beat allot of top fighters. He just couldnt handle Buakaw's gameplan

nicky didnt take anything from this fight!! buakaw did the exact same last year.. which makes me think nicky has not got a good fighting brain!! sorry to say.. and yes just do enough to win dont pick up damage or use up to much energy.. but i think the k1 bosses fixed the win for souwer last year,,buakaw did the same just do enough. petro was next,, be a while before you will have another dekker again..

yeah ok, some fughters have one style and not much variation. maybe holzken is one of those fighters. he matches up good enough against other fighters and you have to say it quite unlucky to keep meeting buakaw early.

Bruce Lee was in no way fake. His hand and foot speed was faster than any living human alive. Were there tougher and better fighters than Bruce Lee? Yes. But not many in the west were aware of them. This Buakaw would have been destroyed by Bruce Lee. Bruce took on tougher opponents.
Buakaw is great but he is not and never will be close to the fighter that was Bruce Lee.

Bruce lee was an amazing man, one of the fathers of Kung fu and its philosophy, i have a tremendous amount of respect for the guy. Look At Baukaw's fight record, 400+, Bruce lee was not a live fighter, yes he had some professional fights but NOTHING on the level of this. At the end of the day, as amazing as Bruce was he was glorified by the media, he could not easily beat a pure breed like Buakaw.

I agree with Graftin. I love Bruce, but he was played up so much that most of the things that people say about him aren't even true. So much about him is pure myth. He beat 20-30 men together in his MOVIES like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa all do. Bruce took on tougher opponents? Like who??? Most of those fights are purely speculation and you hear different things depending on who you talk too. Buakaw is right there on television and his records and acheivments are there.

Those are videos of Bruce sparring, not fighting. There are no REAL videos of Bruce Lee in a real fight. I know he has fought people on his sets a couple of times, I was also challenged by a martial artist from the Chinese community in San Fran to make Bruce stop teaching non-Asians, and even Chuck Norris says he couldn't even get a finger on Bruce. However, all those guys were more or less his size and also limited to specific martial arts, not real street fights.

Bruce Lee is a bully growing up and he fights on the street all the time. He has street credit. Sport fighting like muay thai is different. The jab will lose to a finger jab. The roundhouse kick will lose to the jkd scoop kick to the groin. Muay thai will have problems dealing with wrestling, grappling, and submission. Bruce lee will own Buakaw in a street fight. I'm fans of both and Muay Thai and boxing are my two favorites, but this is the truth.

bruce fought against kids..that doesn't make anybody a credible street fighter. nobody knows how good bruce really was or wasn't aside from sparring or kicking a few of his stunt doubles while making a movie. nobody. he is just overblown and too glorified by the media and the "legend" of bruce that people make it sound like he isn't human. bruce admired muhammad ali as a fighter and has said publicly that his biggest fear is fighting a bigger guy who is unrestricted like him in a fight.

During his days, there were a lot of karate champions who would not fight bruce in a streetfight and he would accept any challenges. He has also beaten a muay thai practioner. My teacher taught me mainly boxing and muay thai. The roundhouse kick is indeed a muay thai technique that lands with the shin. The faster front kick straight to the groin will beat the slower roundhouse kick. A poke to the eye will take out any opponent. Check out rich franklin's latest UFC match and you will know.

Although Muay Thai has some weaknesses, I still love muay thai, and then Boxing. Then kyokushin karate, kungfu, jiujitsu, and wrestling. I like martial arts in general. You don't have to agree with me, this is from my experience and this is my opinion. If I must face a life and death situation, my instinct will be to strike the guy's eye and then the groin. If I wanna kick ass, I will use Muay thai, boxing, and kyokushin just to inflict pain and fear.

If a dude from Chinatown in San Francisco (who was trained in only traditional styles) almost beat Bruce (according to him he did beat Bruce, but I don't believe that) then I feel safe in an experienced fighter who may have a style with limitations but knows how to fight with what he has such as Buakaw. Until theres a video of Bruce Lee in a REAL fight with REAL people and not students then its simply anyones guess. We know Buakaw can kick ass at least in a ring.

I mean I agree with what your saying. The philosophy of Jeet Kune Do and Bruce Lee's strategies are absolutely correct. But nobody can say Bruce would wreck any of these guys cause nobody has seen him fight..only demonstrate and spar. There are accounts of people who have witnessed these fights, but doesn't mean they are being truthful. He's a genius when it comes to fighting, but that's all we know.
