This theme kills! However, the show was just okay, needed more "oomph" at times, and ending it with a UFO abduction solidified it as beyond camp, which is too bad
I remember this show vividly. I was 18-years-old. I could never get into it. It was TOO glitzy. The great Barbra Stanwyck, Charleston Heston, and Stephanie Beecham were added incentives, but it wasn't enough to keep my attention. There was no originality like "Knots Landing". And it failed with me, attempting to be entertaining. And with the theme song every week, I was always anticipating Christopher Reeves or George Reeves to be resurrected from the grave and fly over the Colbys' mansion.
The music would have been more suited to some kind of superhero show-something like Superman....I wouldn't have been surprised if the reason 1 it didn't do well is because of the music, does a lot for a fan base. Nice theme, but totally ridiculous show, as was Dynasty BUT it had Adam and Alexis who we all hated but liked. Also, in Dynasty there'd been no mention of 'other' Colbys save Cecil....
boy, people and their negative feedback....anyway love dynasty 2 the colby's.....GREAT SPIN OFF TO THE ORIGINAL..."WOW" THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S AN EXTENSION OF THE FIRST.........
It's silly not to release The Colbys on DVD. The first series of Dynasty is on DVD and is that really better than the first series of The Colbys? All a matter of opinion ofcourse. The Colbys only problem was it wasn't original. Without Dynasty ever being made and with the addition of Joan Collins it would no doubt have been a massive success. Thank God The Colbys are on UK TV again now!
The problem with the Colbys was it never lived up to its promise after the credits ended. I always just wanted Fallon and Jeff to board a plane back to Denver and never look back. Once Barbara Stanwyck left I think it sank fast. I never did think however Fallon would board a spaceship back to Denver. But hey there we go!!
@jwatwater At the height of DYNASTY'S popularity, ABC thought it would be a good idea to do a spin-off of this show. Originally it was called DYNASTY II: The Colby's, then either in the middle of the season or the beginning of the second season (as it only lasted 2 seasons), They just changed the name to THE COLBY'S. The fat and the skinny of the matter is, this show SUCKED!!! I MEAN - IT WAS BAD!!!
They thought they would cast the WHO WAS of Hollywood and cast them as the Carrington's California counterparts. Since this show aired when I was in JR High School, I didnt remember much about it. So about 10 years ago when they re-ran all the episodes on SOAP NET, I thought I might watch it from an adult perspective. I was right as a teenager . . . THIS SHOW SUCKED!!! The best part of it to me was THE THEME MUSIC!
God! Talk about throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the opening credits! They must have cost a bloody fortune. Brilliant the way Steph tosses her fur coat away and how Emma Samms turns to the camera startled and sexy-pure 80s excess and how we all loved it. Montalban also looks like he's in the middle of stealing some naff objet d'art off the mantlepiece and then pretending he's only looking at it! WILL WHOEVER OWNS THE RIGHTS, PLEASE LET THIS GLORIOUS SHOW COME ON DVD?
@RaskoValjean thats one of the reasons why the show ended it was too expensive to make, paramount who are releasing dynasty on dvd(here in the uk anyway) said to me when i contacted them that they've no plans to release the colbys on dvd. sorry
I used to love watching this show so many years ago. I was young too. What I don't remember is the theme music sounding like an opening to Superman LOL. Still love it.
@jakemiller5000 I think this opening theme was much better than Dynasty's opening theme. This is more up upbeat than Dynasty's. The Colbys is more about the character's stories and their purpose. Dynasty didn't make sense with its plots as The Colbys did.
I agree. This theme song is the best! The only one that comes in at a VERY close second is Bill Conti's other theme: Falcon Crest. Listen to the Opening for season 8, version 1 and at :41, it sounds EXACTLY like the opening of The Colbys and Dynasty. Conti wrote all three.
I really wish they would bring The Colbys & Dynasty back and update it with a modern flair. If they got some great actors and some old characters and some great writers I'm sure it would be a hit!!!!
Heavens to Murgatroid! What a STIRRING theme! The use of lines reminds me very much of the opening credits of the 1960 Hitchcock classic "Psycho". I never watched an episode of this show (or of "Dynasty' itself) but remember it's brief run. As far as I know, it was the only TV series that the late Charlton Heston starred in. THANK YOU very much for posting this! CHEERS! :-)
look at my girl STANWYCK.....she brought the "class" to this short lived series....without her it failed and floppped.....of course Maxwell Caulfield wasn't too bad either....reputed to be a hunk and hung .....I guess Juliet Mills didn't hang onto him for 30+ years for nothing....LOL....!!!
0:50 What an entrance! You knew right of the bat that Sable was a class act all the way, quite the lady, intelligent and with an exquisite taste for art.
It is incredible since listening to this music makes me re-live through many moments that i lived when i used to see this series... it seems to me as if i were there in my living room again watching it...it is such a strange and touching feeling of well being... and im not high lol
No, Caress was Alexis' sister. And Alexis was Sable's cousin. So, they are related, but they are not sisters. Sable's sister was Frankie, played by Katharine Ross.
I agree , an updated version of dynasty/colbys with all the kids , little Blake must be 27, 28 now, and kristina 25 , we need some glamour back on our screens , I loved them all from dynasty , colbys , falcon crest, Dallas, knots landing, even Aussie import return to Eden . Camp tv escapism , can't beat it.
@njdh Hell yes! I would love a NextGen Dynasty! That would rule, and I'd def tune in, or at least Tivo. I miss these grandiose bitchfests; sorry but Hellcats doesn't cut it. Not one of these so called "bitches" would last five seconds against Alexis Colby!
there must be some saddos on here if my comment of wondering if the Colby's mansion is the same as the one in the Blind Date movie is deemed as a poor comment.
I dont know if it was used in that movie but the house itself is (or was at the time) owned by Barron Hilton of the Hilton hotel dynasty. The set for the back exterior of the house was actually a remodelled version of the mansion set from the movie Mommy Dearest.
I remember the opening theme reminded me a lot of the Superman one. Hey, maybe they could have put him in there. I mean, the last season finale had a UFO in it so what the hell...
Also a fan here. I remember reading that she was disappointed in her character's limited role, disliked some of the weak and silly lines she delivered and was disappointed by the unprofessionalism of the younger actors. The article also read, if I remember correctly, that she had hoped that being in the "Dynasty" family meant that she could see Linda Evans (her co-star from The Big Valley) more often, but the sets were very much apart and that never happened.
They say The Colbys failed because it was too close a copy to Dynasty--I guess in looking closely it was from the start of the opening theme, to the showing of a mansion like Blake's--Jason was Blake, Frankie was Krystle, Sable was Alexis, Miles was kind of like Adam, Zach was like Cecil Colby...the only thing different was Constance Colby--there was no one on Dynasty quite like her!
Exactly!!! The Colbys first several episodes was like what Dynasty use to be when it first debut in 1980. Once Miss Barbra Stanwyck left after the first season the storylines on the Colbys just got too confusing, unrealistic and just plain stupid! Both The Colbys & Dynasty, just got ridiculous with all these guest appearances, jumping back & forth with characters on both shows adding too many new characters that seem out of place.
I thought Stephanle Beacham was great as Sable,in the UK they showed Duynasty and The Colbys on alternate Fridays which got very confusing, the biggest let down was no Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon but a wimpy Fallon played by Emma Samms.
i heard partly it was due to health reasons (she passed away a year or so after the show ended) but word on the street was also that she was unhappy with the quality of the show, as far as writing/plot..but hey it was prime time soap in the 80's, maybe she didnt realize it would be as camp! (but im so glad it was! :)
oh really? well you know Miss. Stanwyck was from the old school and in those days you didnt have any of that, so i can understand her not having much patience for Max being tardy for the party...he was fine though (have you seen him lately? My God he did NOT age well...and you know hes married in real life to Tabitha from "Passions"??? Thats random...)
Yea thats true. Well glad to hear hes still working. It be nice now that they have remade "90210" and "Melrose Place" if somebody would be smart enough to do a updated version of "Dynasty" and they could build it around all the Carrington/Colby kids...i would LOVE that! as long as they did it right!
The writing was atrocious I remember watching and wishing every minute that geoff and fallon would pack up and go back to denver and take sable with them
