I actually know one of the guys in this video. There were no warnings of "certain death," and there were no 20-25' walls of water in Surfside. The surge simply came in much quicker than anticipated. They thought there would be more time to get out. The media added those comments to try and make it sound more dramatic.

If you want to see some real idiots, the next time the weather channel has "hurricane Ike" on their storm stories, watch it. It highlights this couple who choose to stay in a bait shop that is 160 ft. over the ocean during the hurricane. Then when it finally dawns on them that it might not have been such a good idea, they call 911 and are told they are on their own. Then they complain about how the coast guard is going to rescue them.

I live in Freeport. We got the heck out first thing Wednesday morning (before the mandatory)! Thank goodness we had something standing when we got back home. Been back to the beach since and glad to see how everyone is dusting off and getting things rolling again. Love Surfside very much.

my guess, probably pretty dirty and not very well stacked. Freeport might have been better than Galveston. Windsurfed Juan there in 85 Cat 3 but only 65mph winds came ashore, ended up going inland to Clear Lake and had a blast!

He lives on Fort Velasco Drive, not near the sea and at the last minute the 'cane veered North per NOAA. Had it hit the area directly he would have been floating with his fridge. They had buses and transport for everyone at Surfside set up at no cost to a no cost shelter. When you ski off the posted trail on the Mountain and need to be rescued, you cover the costs to save your dumb ass, something to consider for these sandbillies.

I lived in Surfside in the late 70's and after fleeing to Austin twice a year for several years I moved there and never looked back. Surfside is only about a quarter of a mile wide and a mile long. But it was a great time for a couple of years in my twenties. They had good Seafood too.

As someone who lived in Surfside, I can tell you that everyone there has seen big ass hurricanes before and know better than the newscasters what to expect. They should stick to what they know, which is probably hot cocoa and remote car starters.
