I actively show Cavaliers. To say that clipping or trimming a Cavalier is "wrong" is, well, WRONG. I laughed at the post trying to quote the AKC breed standard--they obviously don't have a clue what they're talking about. The coat requirements there refer to the show ring ONLY. It is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE to clip a pet, a rescue, an agility dog, or ANY dog NOT ACTUALLY BEING SHOWN...and, psst: the show dogs get trimmed too! (Sorry for the caps--some people just won't ever get it.)
@XtremeGaming123 It's fine to shave your dog... it shows you take time to care for him/her and that is what counts. ;) I'm sure your dog is comfortable and loved. ;)
I consider myself a cavvie snob, but my goodness. Everyone is entitled to have their cav groomed however they like!! Yes, trimming the paws and feathers isn't for everyone, but those who don't like it don't need to make a big stink about it!! Seriously...the way you groom your cav doesn't change their wonderful, fun and loving personalities! So those of you who are complaining about this...get over it and go cuddle your cavalier!!! :P
I have been grooming since 1989. For me, the priority is that the dog is comfortable & happy. Everything else is insignificant. I give my professional advice based on the breed, individual dog, coat type, & the owners life style. It's only hair & if the owner likes the groom, it suits them & the dog, then I have done a good job. They get what they pay for. Show dog owners & snobs can do what they like as well. But, I believe you should always put the comfort & happiness of the dog first.
Look she said you "technically" aren't supposed to, but where I am from in Australia, cavies get very hot without being trimmed. Get over it, it's an animal not a doll. Spend 1500 on a doll, then complain about cutting it's hair. The fur will GROW BACK!
Why buy a beautifull Cavalier and do this to it, some people are just to lazy to look after the coat. I have two caviliers and I bought them because I like the look of the coat and I keep them looking the way they should they are sweet little dogs and always wagging their tails. I must say this one dose'nt look happy at all and I dont see it wagging it's tail. I dont show. A CAVI SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LOOK LIKE A CAVI.
@sue079 Shame on you Sue079!! I didn't BUY my Cavalier, I RESCUED him AND the hair DOES NOT MAKE THE DOG!! An owner should have the right to make a dog looks the way they want as well! IT'S FUR!!!!!! GET A GRIP LADY!!
@sue079 I have to agree with the other people here. Your reaction to this video is silly. No dog wags her tail when she's getting groomed, but that doesn't mean she isn't happy and healthy. I also rescued my Cavie, and I keep her clipped because we live in a rural area with a lot of burrs and fox tails. I think she's much happier looking less than show dog perfect than she would be if I had to keep her indoors all the time to avoid painful burr removal.
@sue079 As someone who shows Cavaliers and has had them since 1999, this is silly. What people do with their dog's hair is none of your concern, especially if the dog is healthy and loved--which is what really matters.
And P.S. ask any groomer, rescue volunteer, or vet who they think is "lazy"--the person who has a clean, neat, trimmed dog, or the dog that comes in to them matted to the skin by someone who didn't give a damn. There are tons of trimmed Cavaliers out there, including mine--honestly not sure why someone would choose freak out over this.
And P.S. ask any groomer, rescue volunteer, or vet who they think is "lazy"--the person who has a clean, neat, trimmed dog, or the dog that comes in to them matted to the skin by someone who didn't give a fig. There are tons of trimmed Cavaliers out there, including mine--honestly not sure why someone would choose freak out over this.
@sue079 Does this mean you are saying it is also WRONG for people to shave down their poodles? should they all be in a SHOW standard clip! People get dogs for the personality!
@sue079 Good Grief. Get over YOURSELF. If we don't show, there is no reason that we shouldn't clip. You are quite rude to try and force your narrow views on people like this. Remington looks sweet, just like my Ella.
just came across you video... picked up a lot of great tips (I have 2 CKC Spaniels). What I haven't been able to find anywhere is how to trim/scissor their ears.
@Sedefika That is a lie told, it doesn't resemble one at all, and if you people are true Cavalier owners, you would not approve of this. Get you a mut or something to degrade rather than degrading such a regal dog.
@Mr808Muscle MEH.... You do realize that she's giving him a puppy cut will make him a more hygienic doggy. You won't have to worry about him trapping dirt and poop in his fur. You also won't have to deal with a lot of matting. Stop being a snob! Everyone doesn't want a show dog or a show look.
@emomagica I'm sorry that I purchased my dogs knowing that I will have to brush them daily and keep them clean. Like I said, there are standards that the dog should be held to which separates that dog from all others. I admit, I can be a little bit of a snob for not liking the "new" looks you people are liking for my dog breed, but my reasons are justified when it changes the overall appearance of how the dog is supposed to look. IT LOOKS LIKE A DIFFERENT BREED ENTIRELY.
@Mr808Muscle That's your personal choice and right, just like it is perfectly acceptable for someone to say to hell with the breed standard and give their cav a puppy cut. What do you suppose we do to all the little cavalier that are born with characteristics that do not meet the breed standard? Shall we put them to sleep?! Breed standards only matter for show dogs who are going to be judged according to those standards, and not for a pet.
@emomagica VERY good point! I get soo sick of people getting their undies in a knot over some DOGS HAIR really people!!??? Get over it. IT does always grow back and it is sometimes better for the dog and the owner... I am sick of snobs as well. ;) He's blocked and so will all others with rude comments. ;)
@Mr808Muscle Look Mr... you do what you like with your dog... why exactly where you researching grooming a Cavi if you don't want to groom a Cavie? I am very proud of you for caring properly for your dog.. not all do and even those that do have the right to keep their dog trimmed as they wish no matter the breed... you paid for your dog so you get that right too... I paid for mine so I'll do with his coat as I wish ;)
@Mr808Muscle Hmmmm so i am a groomer In AUSTRALIA where i get 40 degree celcius heat high humidity and it is WRONG! that my clients choose to have there cavy shaved in summer so that when they go to the beach, dog park or lay in the sun they dont over heat and get burs, sand and dirt in there coat? If you got a standard poodle would you keep it in a continental clip? The dogs personality is what people want not the Looks! Looking only at looks makes you very shallow!
Thank you! This has been a great help with clear description and information,as a new groomer I am really grateful to have found you, now i feel much more confident to groom a cavalier tomorrow....
I really enjoyed your videos. Great job explaining how to trim and keep our fur babies hair manageable. If you have time, can you tell me the size shears (thinning, curved, etc.) that I should buy. We just adopted Elvis @ 3 years and are getting another puppy so I need to stock up to keep the hair under control.
@abatten82 Number one rule of pet grooming is you always please your owners... no matter what they want as long as it doesn't hurt the dog. This clearly doesn't hurt this handsome little guy at all! You really need to learn how to not be so rude!! :)
@abatten82 You are aweful!! you will now be blocked from my comments, please just don't watch my vids if they ANNOY you so much because frankly, you annoy me by commenting. ;)
wow just watching your videos, they are really great! I have recently started my own mobile grooming business from a van in the uk & although I went to college to get qualified in dog grooming it is always great to see how other groomers work & your videos are really clear in instructions & the grooms turn out lovely! Thank you :)
This is a super helpful video! I can't get my cavalier to the groomers at the moment because of the snow, so I had a go myself, and it was nowhere near as difficult as I thought it would be. He looks rather dapper now if I do say so myself! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
im currently a student at college training to become a dog groomer and i must say i have learnt more from you than college , your amazing and thank you so much , keep posting your videos , caroline ...from uk
Thank you! I will as soon as one comes in that wants a Schnauzer cut.. that is the problem, I don't have a bunch that come to me and the ones that do get cut short all over except their faces. I will as soon as I can though. ;) Thanks again for the comment!
I did 12 feet today, using the technique you showed, quite successful. Waiting to get the thinning scissors, and then its all going to happen! again, thank you for your video. I posted the link on a local site, not everyone has show cavaliers, it is just practical here in Australia to trim them sometimes.
I agree, I don't know about in Australia or not but here they tend to itchy little buggers! So keeping them a bit shorter helps with that too. ;) Glad you liked my video and glad your babies were gentle on you. :) Thanks so much for your kind posts! :D I will be adding another video of my Cavie getting a "clipped" hair cut before long so stay tuned! :)
Thanks, for sharing this video! Hopefully it will help me trim my own Cavalier. He has a mat in his tail that I can't seem to get out. Any recommended tools to help?
You should look for a matt breaker, it is a bunch of blades on the end of a brush type handle that breaks the matt into smaller matts that are easier to get out. ;)
Yes it sure does... quickley usually. :) I do leo's hair cut frequently and he gets soo hairy again so quick. Thanks for the comment, give Bucks hugs from me! :)
Thank you for making this video! The little cutie in the video was so well-behaved and looked fantastic when you were done with him. I would love to groom Oliver myself.
Why thank you!!! Leo is good in fact I am taping a video of him either tomorrow or the next day and putting it up for a full hair cut on a Cavie. ;) Thanks for asking about my little man though! :)
