Julia Barr and Kate Collins were AMC's best actresses, and yet, always in the shadow of the very limited theatrics of Susan Lucci. Not to diminish Lucci's star power, but the outrageous attention she got as her peers were turning out powerful scenes like this just goes to show why soaps have foundered. A good soap opera works as an ensemble and not any one actor's star showcase - may there be no more STARS on soap - only actors who are there to work and do away with superficial glamour..
Julia did not win her first Emmy for these scenes, in fact she wasn't even nominated this year, which was noted as a MAJOR oversight by the magazines at the time. She was nominated the next year - 1989 for the scenes after she found out that Dixie was carrying Adam's child, and she won. She won in 1990 for work in 1989 and 1998 for work in 1997 (plane crash aftermath.) She really should have been lead actress in both years, and she really should have three Emmys.
Julia Barr for me is the best actress AMC has ever had. Even David Canary has said so in all his interviews. Finally, the idiots that run ABC came back to thier sences and brought Brooke back for the end of the show!
Laura is dead, the second Laura is a girl that Brooke took in as a teenager, part of the draw was the fact that she has the same name as Brookes daughter.
I don't agree. I think it depends on the type of person you are and youyr ability to handle different types of scenes. They say it takes focus and persy putting your mind somewhere else at a time when you grieved something or someone or something of that nature. The acting abilility definitely has somehting to do with it. But some people in this world are just very dramatic as well and have that one ability down pat which enables them to handle these scenes with undeniable ability.
damn so sad, she did a great job i used to love all my children, i didn't watch until the 90's but damn why she didn't win a emmy for this? do u have more clips, and the funeral
I started watching in March/1991 so I did not see this when it aired. Fabulous writing and acting! My mom told me she cried for five days straight over this story. That is testament to Julia Barr's great acting...and it was one of Daytime's most well deserved Emmy wins.
Best AMC Criers 5)Tad 4)krystal 3)Maria (even tho i hated her) 2) Dixie (Even tho i hated her) 1) Brook English. (no one can bring the house down like Julia Barr)
I am not so sure cause Brooke would be in company with Greenlee...when Leo died, Rebecca Budig did great with turning on the waterworks. Eden Riegel (Bianca) was also a great crier. But, yes, Barr is one of the best
well most AMC fans think Greenlee and Kendall are veterans, so there goes that theory. Rebecca did a fine job, but i'm talking HEAVY HITTERS...Actresses who can bring the house DOWN!!!!!
Being a veteran has nothing to do with one's ability to cry....look at the new Scott. His crying was excellent when he found out Stuart died and he has been on less than a year.
Being a vet has every thing to do with it. i'm not taking anything away from the newbies. but trust me Scott's crying scene was nothing compared to Adam's (David Canary)
Of course having more experience usually means you improve on the emotional scenes but I have seen on AMC, over the years (and I have been watching for 18 1/2 years), times when newbies or ones who have been on a short period of time do better in crying scenes than the vets. I guess it depends on each scene.
@berettadreams and I have a different opinion so let's leave it there. I don't know if you got my point but what I mentioned in my posts here was there are times when those who are on a soap for a short period of time commit to better acting in emotional scenes than long time players.
@eric442 This scene got Barr her first Emmy. The second Emmy for Supporting Actress (both were in that category) came from scenes submitted in the aftermath from the plane crash which left Maria "dead"

Years of being on the show hasn't improved veterans like Susan Lucci's acting.

LAURA- Is not DEAD. She is not DEAD. She was traveling with Brooke, another fail story line in AMC.

@Whiteboymdew That is the other Laura. Brooke has two daughters named Laura, one died, the other one travels with her.

Fantastic acting by Julia Barr in that scene; all three of them were really good there to be honest.
Can't wait to see Brooke again.

I miss her, she was an excellent crier.

Julia Barr acted the hell out this scene. AMC really needs to bring her back. And now would be the perfect time, with Erica & Adam getting cozy.
OMG Erica and Brooke had the best rivalry.
Bring Julia Barr back!!!

Eden's on her way, but she's not there yet. and Rebecca's not even in the top 50. she's way too green, no pun intended.

I thought Rebecca did great with Leo's death and most AMC fans agree.
