class 50's are my favorite. i just like the way they sound and the big white arrow on the side is part of what i remember from being a kid in the 1980's. i used to like standing on the railway bridges and if it was a 50 coming i got a kick out of getting the blast in the face from four exhaust stacks.
Yes, not much space between engine and loco sides!
The engines r interesting, evolving from an engine first used in a loco in 1947 in uk! with 1,600hp! it evolved into engine in class 56 when paxman took over, paxman even made deltic engines eventually; not any more!
Interesting how bhp can be more than doubled with technology!
31 144 dnt u mean 50s not 56s

Hmmm... apparently Class 50's start up fast, or is not really cold?

It had been running most of that morning, hence why it started so quick

Vice Verca actually. Napier, the company that built the Deltic engines, supplied intercooler parts for the Paxman Class 43

English electric bought napier in the 1950's or earlier, I have the date somewhere!
Although u r correct in that the turbos r napier turbos etc I think.
I think napier turbos found there way onto everything at on point didnt they?!
English electric was absorbed by paxman in the late 60's or early 70's, but still turbo's were made that were called napier turbo's!!
At least to the best of my knowledge.? :)

Early class 56's had Brown Boveri turbos
