HHAH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so....much..mney D: WARNING DONT DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT WORTH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!
I always loved how stoned Robin Finck looked at 0:13 holdin' Trent. Good times. Man, I miss Closure. I bought the VHS long ago when it came out in '98 I think. Still have it but it doesn't work. I wish it was on DVD or I could find it somewhere.
I used to hate musicians destroying shit then I reaslised they have dozens of guitars waiting back stage and keyboards too. Like if I set fire to my guitar, which I never would, if they called for an encore I'd be fucked! acapella my generation anyone? No?
You have to remember that the synths you see getting destroyed are just very cheap MIDI controllers. They're Yamaha DX-7s and, other than what NIN used them for (good controllers that are easily replaceable/fixable/smashable :P), they're pretty useless. All the sounds that you hear coming out of them are from expensive gear, tucked safely away somewhere out of the path of Trent and his mic stands haha
@pulsedemon Nope. DX-7's were (and still aren't) cheap. In fact, you can still pay upwards of $800 for a used one today. Yamaha DX-7 FM synths were considered high-end during the the late 80's and early 90's and can be heard on many different songs during this time. They were highly sought after instruments for a while. Hell, Yamaha still makes arguably one of the most desirable synths on the market today with the "Motif XF".
@pulsedemon ...(con't). Midi "controllers" are what NIN has used since the Fragility tour. You can notice this from watching concert footage here on YouTube. This actually makes sense because now days all you need is a computer or two and bunch of controllers requesting sounds. Things were much different in the early-to-mid 90's, including the amount of money NIN was raking in. Naturally, it must reach a point where it doesn't make any financial sense to keep breaking expensive synths.
Eh, I'm going solely by an article (possibly in Keyboard magazine) where Trent stated that they used the DX-7s as controllers on The Downward Spiral tour because they were cheap and the keys were easily replaceable. My rather short attempt at finding this article lead to nothing so for all I know you're right haha
@pulsedemon Oh really? Hmmm...Well, the reality is I can't say for sure because I wasn't there. :-) The fact that DX-7's are expensive today might just be a result of becoming a vintage synth and people now want them for the nostalgia. Well played, sir!
@bopptb You use the term "expensive" pretty loosely, haha. DX7s are very cheap compared to most other vintage synths, especially analog synth. There were so many DX7s made and they are still functioning well after so long unlike older, more fragile analog synths. I had one for a short time, just for the novelty of making a whole song using nothing but sounds made with it. It's on my profile somewhere. "100% DX7"
haha wow i thought the same thing. he seemed normal and casual then. then the drugs and the anger came along. wish i was a teen in 1994 when he was crazy like that
He must be goddamn strong to chuck those Yamaha DX7s like that, those things weigh a ton. Although nowadays you can pick them up for like £150 (either that or I was lucky), back in the 90s they must of been cheap as dirt considering the keyboard industry move to workstations.
some people and artist say the destruction acts and wild stage shows are almost "pre meditated" which is pretty much total bullshit, like Trent has said "something does work it has to pay the price" lol and theres alot of just angst in Reznor himself especially on the Self Destruct Tour. Shit happens on stage ya know like a rush and then things just happen sober or not. I remember that hardcore bullshit scene was around they would just tell each other to go wild lol fags.
those yamaha DX7 keyboards are ment to be broken.lol I'm more into Korg synthesizers and some Roland ones but different kyboards are better for different things of course. Be weird trent fucking up a module/analog synth with all kinda wires and shit. Guess they thought building the base of some of the keyboards into the stage might stop destruction. NOPE lol
there was this one quote from Trent that said if an instrument fails on stage it mocks you and must be destroyed. How true. If I ever get my band together I'm going to cover March of the Pigs and destroy the stage at the end.
hehe i think i understand why he seems so reserved these days... hes trying not to throw mic stands at ppls heads... lol... i like him better this way though..:(
They weren't exactly free either.. But neither are ticket prices, so I think he was fine. I think they repaired a lot of them too. It's pretty hard to actually break a synth like those completely. Swap the keybed and slap a new display on there, maybe a few buttons and a modwheel and it's up and running again :D
