You have to remember that the synths you see getting destroyed are just very cheap MIDI controllers. They're Yamaha DX-7s and, other than what NIN used them for (good controllers that are easily replaceable/fixable/smashable :P), they're pretty useless. All the sounds that you hear coming out of them are from expensive gear, tucked safely away somewhere out of the path of Trent and his mic stands haha

@pulsedemon Nope. DX-7's were (and still aren't) cheap. In fact, you can still pay upwards of $800 for a used one today. Yamaha DX-7 FM synths were considered high-end during the the late 80's and early 90's and can be heard on many different songs during this time. They were highly sought after instruments for a while. Hell, Yamaha still makes arguably one of the most desirable synths on the market today with the "Motif XF".

@pulsedemon ...(con't). Midi "controllers" are what NIN has used since the Fragility tour. You can notice this from watching concert footage here on YouTube. This actually makes sense because now days all you need is a computer or two and bunch of controllers requesting sounds. Things were much different in the early-to-mid 90's, including the amount of money NIN was raking in. Naturally, it must reach a point where it doesn't make any financial sense to keep breaking expensive synths.

Eh, I'm going solely by an article (possibly in Keyboard magazine) where Trent stated that they used the DX-7s as controllers on The Downward Spiral tour because they were cheap and the keys were easily replaceable. My rather short attempt at finding this article lead to nothing so for all I know you're right haha

@bopptb You use the term "expensive" pretty loosely, haha. DX7s are very cheap compared to most other vintage synths, especially analog synth. There were so many DX7s made and they are still functioning well after so long unlike older, more fragile analog synths. I had one for a short time, just for the novelty of making a whole song using nothing but sounds made with it. It's on my profile somewhere. "100% DX7"

They weren't exactly free either.. But neither are ticket prices, so I think he was fine. I think they repaired a lot of them too. It's pretty hard to actually break a synth like those completely. Swap the keybed and slap a new display on there, maybe a few buttons and a modwheel and it's up and running again :D
