This was sung at my grandpas funeral as one of his wishes when he passed a away, it makes me tear up when hearing it because it is beautiful and sad to me fill with lots of good memories and some bad.
Now I know how the English soldiers felt on December 25th, 1914. Like many of those soldier I do not know the German language, yet I can understand this song in German just as easily as if were in English.

That's not true. Modern Scots is closer (some call it a dialect but you'll see it called its own language more often than not) and the Frisian languages are in the Frisian-Anglic branch of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages. The Frisian lanuages are minority languages in the Netherlands so it's not a surprise, that you haven't heard of them.

@mgunar FYI Germany does have a lot to feel sorry for, those 9 million Germans killed after WW2 (if that figure is true which I doubt) also the responsibility of Hitler. Ig Germany hadn't started WW1 then WW2 wouldn't have started either.

Now I know how the English soldiers felt on December 25th, 1914. Like many of those soldier I do not know the German language, yet I can understand this song in German just as easily as if were in English.

So beautiful and so moving. My family emigrated from Germany (Muenster) in the 1830's, but kept the language and culture until my generation. I feel fortunate to have learned carols in German at the primary school I attended. Thank you for posting this with the words, so I can sing along.

I am British but have Jewish roots. I know that many of my family were killed by 'the Germans' as they are referred to.
But I have no hate for Germany. I love Germany, its people, the landscapes. Germans are not Nazis.
This is a beautiful song, probably better than the English version. Glad to see so many people love it too, and are happy to share their memories.

@SporeAndThings Good for you! I live in a town that was founded by German Catholics, and my maternal grandfather was full German (and one of the sweetest people I have ever known). I know how some people can get about this. I know a girl from my town who dreaded going to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. because she hated being discriminated against because of the Nazis and her German decent. Thank you so much for not letting the Nazis define all of Germany.

The song was written in Mariapfarr/Lungau, Austria, a couple of years before the music was added that Christmas Eve 1818.
