And she STILL does that today in 2011!! smh thats a senseless gift right there! cuz you not suppose to be able to do things like that, and it sound good! Thats just crazy!!
I mean really!! Killin the stage while singing INTO the mic is one thing, i mean hey, thats expected...but to WALK AWAY from the mic and still be heard, and with a smile, still kill the song AND BE HEARD...come on!! The girl got the gift!

I always wonder why more people don't remember this? I watched all of Live Aid in 1985 as a teenager - the whole thing - The Who, Queen, Bowie, Petty, Madonna etc and this absolutely wiped the floor with all of them. Just a masterclass in performance.
Very emotional performance. Mrs. Labelle was really possessed that day. She sang her heart out and the high notes away from the microphone was somenthing really amazing.
I don't know how many years it's going to take, for eveyone in this world to learn, but let me say it like this! There is only one "God", no matter what you may call him, he's still God! There is only one "world", no matter how many planets become known!, And there is only one "Patti Labelle", don't get me wrong!, there have been singers that have song a song. But dear "Patti", all you can do is shake your head and say, but try not to yell she "SANG"!!!, that song. "PATTI", is touched by God!!!!
This is the best performance of Patti. I just thought about something: Alot of people call her high notes and style of singing screaming, but she is a good singer and why have the talent and not use it. I have the We Are The World 10th Anneversary DVD with the Live Aid performance and Patti stuck out because she was singing so loud. I noticed alot of people laughing and looking at her funny. No, she shouldn't have been doing that on a group performance, but that's just Patti's style. Any fool
i have never heard a woman sing better than this, she is amazing, i love whitney, celine , diana ross, dionne warwick, all these great singers, but honestly patti puts even them a little bit in the shade with this performance!!!!
Hello @rabt1952. You sweet lovely man! I also cried on the 13th of July 1985. Me myself was 22 "way back then". Funny, we have the same (Chinese) sign, which should be rabbit/cat. Ever since then, my life has never been the same again. I knew LaBelle, but i did not know Patti LaBelle.
Emotions are my fuel, miss Patti inspires me (to say the least) and you using the word "silly" referring to yourself makes me feel a little bit sad. HEY! You are simply beautiful & wonderful! We know! I love you x
she was in full flight that evening....in her hometown, on global tv, singing in front of a HUGE crowd and she made it so intimate and personal. She's gotta be one of the better singers / performers of the last century. She was well known before LIVE AID but I think this performance really put her on the map, in my opinion. I think she was on the New Attitude tour at the time and after this we saw a lot more of her on tv...
I look to my Queens when i am low. but i am sure chaka, Tina GLadys, Pattie etc.. wwill help. 4 yrs and i feel like a big ol fat biatch, moaning, at 25 yrs young man to another man. i cook, clean, wash, spend, work. What else can i do?

@rabt1952 My dear "Silly old man".... When this was broadcasted, I was 22 and now I'm heading swiftly towards my 50 yh year. And my experience (in terms of being touched, emotions, tears) was and is exactly the same as yours:-). So tell with age, that doesn't matter.
Miss Patti has been my muse ever since and she definitely made my life even more beautiful and rewarding. I really deeply LOVE this unearthly gifted & beautiful woman-spirit. Bye from Sander from Amsterdam:-)
The one , The only, Miss Patti singing live to a global audience of over 1 Billion WITHOUT a micrphone!!!! it was the voice heard throughout the universe , it was great day !!!!!
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! I saw this in the 80's and it brings back memories of a time when there were REAL singers. The singers today can't even fathom giving a performance like this.
Patti made tears come from my eyes....thanks for posting this!

i remeber seeing this at at 3am in the morning when I was beginning to flag having watched since Status Quo opened the concert at 12 midday the previous day and i was gob smacked
The best, first, most amazing, largest, starriest, most individually talented woman who ever lived - everyone else pales into insignificance beside the Almighty Miss LaBelle!
My God Son sent me this video for my birthday. I cried all day. I think I played about 100 times that day. This is Patti at her best. No one sounds like this. I Love You Patti. And thanks to Bob Dylan for writing this song.
OMG!!!! if my voice was that powerful that i could be hear in a huge stadium withg no mic!!!1...Lord have mercy id be tearin it it up EVERY WHERE!!! lol
i sooo love this, i love the words and what a wonderful brilliant patti labelle...even whitney cant top her, she is so amazing, makes me cry every time!!
it just hit me all over again.....Patti, was an accomplished, revered, wealthy and prominent legend even then in 1985. But the one thing that has never changed is that she always sings as if she;s singing for her life. Like her very existence was in jeopardy or something. I defy anyone to recall a time, where she mailed it in. Ive seen her about a dozen times, live...and I have NEVER seen her half step. NOT ONCE.
"Singing for her life" YES that is the best description of how Patti gets when she sings. Ther have been times when I have watched her and thought she was literally going to singe herself crazy. You hit the nail on the head with that one.
Everyone was star struck when they seen this. Everyone was trying to get Patti to come and be appart of their organization or sing for them. Diana Ross made a public appearance about this is what I remember most. She applauded Patti. She was going through with her sister at this time. So she gave it all. She says to this day that when she sings forever young she has to walk away from the mic, her range will continue to go up, and people will be death if she sing the whole thing in the mic.
I remember when this come out and critics was on her boy. Patti was the talk of the town. She was the highest paid celeb and artist at the time of this and when this came about it shot her up through the roof. I remember Diana Ross saying theirs no way she could ever hit one of her notes just crying.
I know what you mean, every time I hear Patti sing I cry. No other female singer has the ability to do that to me. She is definately the worlds greatest singer to me
i cried the first time i watched this, which was a long time ago, and it still makes me cry....ive never seen a better or more emotional performance by a female singer!!
I remember staying up for Patti LaBelle's performance, too! Even though she was already famous, I didn't know who she was when she took the stage, but boy, did I know who she was ... and so did the rest of the world...by the time she was done performing. Just brilliant. This performance still gives me the goosies. Love you, Patti. May you Stay Forever Young.
I'm only 19 so I wasn't around for the original concert and to be honest I had never heard of Patti!! My mam got the Live Aid concert DVD a couple of years ago and I started watching it and 3 performances blew me away, Queen, Eric Clapton and Patti.
In her book Patti says she gives everything she has when she performs, and did so specifically in this performance due to the things she was going through off stage at the time, when she got done she was still shaking and other stars and workers were just in awe and staring at her when she walked to her trailer, like they were seeing her for the first time, stars were star struck and amazed by her after watching this! Proves she's the best ever!!!
This performance was one of the best at Live Aid. I remember staying up til the wee hours of the morning waiting to see what she was going to do and she blew everyone away with this song. She also did IMAGINE. it was truly an OMG moment.
That day was pretty emotional anyway with everyone around the world coming together and watching her work the stage - and giving - she just blew everyone away. Go on Miss Patti. To this day, she still rocks it!
Whitney, Mariah, Celine and even Aretha probably couldn't pull that one off. Maybe Regine but Patti has a connection to her voice I just can't understand.
Patti was possessed by the holy ghost on this performance. On another note Regine in my opinion is just loud. She has no runs or riffs and when she tries they sound like shit(look at her cover for butterfly) at the big note she tries to to do it exactly like mariah which leads regine sounding FLAT
The Phoenix of Philadelphia givin' the power at 5:03 & the crowd realizing it at 5:14-- Can't nobody say this ain't the DIVA of SOUL! (Hit it Patti) , I mean singing to a coliseum without a mic!!!! (WHAT)!
lol i kno right! my aunt and my mom has pictures from the 80s and they have these huge hats and skin tight dresses with big ol' shoulder pads.. lol its hilarious but i guess that was the style back then.. hahaha but still love patti labelle!!!
especially when she steps away from the mic and you can still hear her singing. she was actin a fool with that performance!!!! and of course, she did that song justice.
I LOVES ME MY PATTI LABELLE!!! AND WHOEVER DOESN'T LIKE PATTI, NEEDS A SLAP AND A WAKE UP CALL!!!! LMAO!!
Patti's the true Queen of soul! I like her so much better than Aretha. Not only is Patti a wonderful singer, she is very down to earth - adopted kids and is still married to the same man after 30 plus years. Patti is a national treasure who's talent cannot be touched. Love you Patti!!!
Ohhhhh. My bad. Thanks for the info. Still love Patti - can't wait for her new album. I hear she's recording with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with songs written by Diane Warren...anyone know when that's being released????
she sat the mic down... walked away... n u still heard her... she is wow... i love her...pattie is untouchable... there is noone who compares to her...she gives her all...
yrs, after Live Aid and she said she was in such a "trance" that she didnt even remember singing the song!...Huh!?. And she said that the only reason why she relented to seeing the preformance of this medley was because so many people told her that it was one of the best performances they had ever seen. It was a big deal to a lot of folks. I was 17, then. Cried like a baby, watching it at home. My step dad was from Philly and he and my mom went to see her....She's one of those historic sinsgers.
I never get tired of watching this AMAZING performance! There ain't NOBODY who could pull off singing to an OUTDOOR crowd of this magnitude WITHOUT A MIC and still be HEARD! And I read a rumor that Tina and Dionne were backstage in tears when she sang this song.
I was in tears just watching it. She is such a wonderful, giving, and beautiful person. Patti is simply phenominal. I have never known or heard of anyone that could sing like this.
So were the stage hands and backstage guest which numbered around 300..I worked for the catering company that served the entertainers that night, and we heard her backstage with a mic....
Holy shizz! I hadn't seen this performance since the day it happened in '85...it made me cry then and it made me cry again today. There's such joy in my heart when I hear her sing this! Thanks for posting it! :-)
Thanks for this video. When I was young, we would go to a Patti Labelle concert and come out very pleased. She gives theatrics, sincerity, and a very big part of herself. If you never seen her live, treat yourself because she's on tour this summer. One of the best entertainers in the World.
This is an amazing treasure that we thought was lost to the editors!! That B-word doesn't even need a mike to fill up a football stadium....The True Queen of Everything!!!
The way she put the mic down and still kept singing lol!

Patti's the true Queen of soul! I like her so much better than Aretha. Not only is Patti a wonderful singer, she is very down to earth - adopted kids and is still married to the same man after 30 plus years. Patti is a national treasure who's talent cannot be touched. Love you Patti!!!

Patti's not married anymore. She was div. in 2000

yrs, after Live Aid and she said she was in such a "trance" that she didnt even remember singing the song!...Huh!?.

Patti is diva personified!
soulbrotha63 3 years ago 2
I was in tears just watching it. She is such a wonderful, giving, and beautiful person. Patti is simply phenominal. I have never known or heard of anyone that could sing like this.

So were the stage hands and backstage guest which numbered around 300..I worked for the catering company that served the entertainers that night, and we heard her backstage with a mic....

Thanks for this video. When I was young, we would go to a Patti Labelle concert and come out very pleased. She gives theatrics, sincerity, and a very big part of herself. If you never seen her live, treat yourself because she's on tour this summer. One of the best entertainers in the World.

I've listened to the original version of 'Forever Young'.
But I very much prefer Patti's version.
I don't know why.
But I do.
