I don't agree with the head movements. That is a lot of loading on the Cervical Spine. Plus if you understand the Lovett Reactor then that explains the Lumbar Pain you were experiencing. Other than that it's a good idea
I think part of the reason he having a hard time, his back is too low. This is an hard exercise anyways. His back hurt because he was too low. Why didn't the trainer catch that? I sure did. Also like the trainer said it was probably too much weight too.
If you feel it in your lower back, you need to push out your chest aswell as your 'buns'.
The two areas to concentrate on on moves like this, aswell as deadlifts, squats, overhead presses, etc. are to push out your chest and push out your glutes to maintain a straight, netural spine alignment.
