@lilstewks Hmmm I will have to disagree.....Why? Anybody can learn anything new in music it's a language thats constantly expanding,especially since there are so many approaches to it. I just see each new lesson learned as a tool and when I'm in a situation where I can apply that tool then I'll simply use that tool....Hey I haven't been playing for 20 years (I've been playing for 15) but that's what I've learned over time.

doc you can't get mad at me because of my opinion, for one I'm a drummer and I play percussion(bongos,etc) as a matter of fact the guy singing this song I've played for for over ten years and I came up under some of the best drummers in gospel Kevin Brunson(ultimate pocket), RAY BADY, and Felix D'Kat Pollard, yeah ray was marvin sapp's drummer snapping on grace and mercy. I rented this DVD from Netflix (they have a lot of live gospel and drumming DVDs!). I transcribed the Calvin's parts from this song and it's just a bunch of paradiddles, double paradiddles, singles, etc. In other words, RUDIMENTS!!!!! It's just the way he places them that makes him a FREAK!! He has taken the same rudiments that folks have been doing since the beginning of time and made them his own! After all, isn't that the point?!!!

I'm chiming in months later here. I'm a huge fan of Calvin Rodgers and his mad skills. I think it only pays huge compliments when you put him in such class as the others drummers that were mentioned by "ocbfdog". Any musician who has been blessed to showcase their gifts for God and for the world to hear is bless and in no way should be dogged when comparing to other great ones.

1. Yes, Calvin Rodgers is about as sick as they come.

2. I agree that gospel musicians are tight, but the religiousity behind it is ridiculous.

3. The lyrics are "I'm back" (as in "Tell the Devil I'm Back") not "I'm black". Pretty funny though! :)
