@emma41093 and because she knows about the immense distance between her daughter and herself and the hatred, the sadness, the unhappiness of all that situation. I guess.
I have no real knowledge of how to play piano, however i would refer to earlier scene where daughter is talking about childhood and how (i forgot the character, sorry) played composition with Cello and daughter said " he played it so wrong but so beautifully"
However Im sure this scene goes beyond technicalities of piano playing, and describes something else...perhaps.
And i should have not even posted this message, i regret already.
I happen to know Ingmar Bergman's ex-wife, pianist Käbi Laretei. It is she who plays both versions! She told me it was quite difficult to play it badly. And the whole film crew couldn't tell any difference! (haha that's funny. If you know something you can't pretend you don't.)
wow Liv Ulmann has to have the most expressive face of any actress in film history. That look on her face, so much pain. Now THATS acting. A lot of actors you can see TRYING to do that face but Ulmann is so real so pure so emotionally honest that it leaves me speechless. Ingmar understand the human condition so well.
I think Bergman's the only one director who understood human's being so deep, he was absolutely true to his audience and wanted his actors to be as true as he was.I think the whole shooting thing was shoking for Ingrid Bergman, she was the greatest, but barely ready to such experience, still she played her Charlotte and played geniusly.
Una de las mejores escenas, que revelan la maestría del maestro Bergman, en esta se evidencia la relación entre madre e hija. Una relación que más adelante se evidenciaría.
Im swedish myself , and can feel my own childhood in the seventies through this film . I laugh , and I cry at the same time . One of the best films ever .
One of the best acted scenes ever! Powerful and shattering, Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann turn in two of the best female performances in film history.
Wow i need to see this!! Just by seeing this scene and the trailer, I think I can say that this is Ingrid's best work, its soo modern and it fits Ingrid soo well, because she always acted soo ahead of Hollywood.
Subtitles are irrelevant, it's just the faces. Liv Ullmann does with her eyes what I've seen some Oscar-winners attempt to do with their entire body for decades.
They always say a picture contains a thousand words. The same could be said, and even extended upon, for those thirty seconds when Ullmann watches her mother. So much admiration, anger, fear and resentment all in those eyes, it astounds me.
After playing, Eva asks Charlotte if she liked it, she answers "I liked you." That's not good enough for Eva, and she presses the subject. Charlotte won't answer at first, but when she does, she says "Your technique wasn't at all bad, though you might have taken more interest in Cortot's fingering. But let's just talk about the conception. Chopin was not a mawkish old woman! ..."
I remember the first time I saw the show Absolutely Fabulous musing that Jennifer Saunders (who is familiar with Bergman, as evidenced by her hilarious parody of his films with Dawn French) might have taken Liv Ullmann's frumpy clothes and sour facial expressions in this movie as a kind of model for Saffy(who often wore clothes with that same ridiculous style of collar).
Im Finn, i should know how to speak Swedish but i dont, but i never required any subtitles for this piece, why would i?
Did u like it ?
I like you ?
I suppose...

The little eyebrow winces and the quiver of the lip on Bergman's face are genius.

In this film Ingrid's face is marvelous. Her expressions are slight but compelling. She was a great actress.

Hello
This is very strong scene and beautiful Cinema indeed.
Ive always felt that the difference on how they played Chopin´s Prelude, told more about their difference than words ever could.
About their hopes and regrets.
On my first view, i thought she played it so ´wrong´, on my second view of movie. I felt she played it so ´wrong´ and so beautifully.
Please dont misunderstand word ´wrong´ here
Alot of movies appeal to our emotions, few rare touch them in ways, we cant really descripe.

A brilliant question posed by Bergman that honestly plagues me: art or family first?

p.s. THANK YOU for posting this :-)
Liv Ullmann was my mother's favorite actress and is mine too. Also it's my second favorite of the Chopin preludes (the final one is incomparable).

Love this scene. Ingrid had cancer while making this film.
Ullmann's last name is spelled with two n's. I only found the clip because I guessed that someone might make this mistake.
