The coolest music around and I love the laid back vibe then, how you could see some of the best music of all time for nothing or next to nothing at your local Univ..Now you gotta pay corporate leeches $100 to watch half the crowd holding up cell phones.
This line-up,MO1 are incredible! John is coming here to Austin in Nov.,I want to go see him,tix are like $100 though. What's happened to the music biz man?Everybody's got their hand in the pie.Well,I've seen him 4x in diff.stages but nvr.MO1 bum'r
If you were there I've no idea what you were on but it's scrambled your brain and some. The info I have is may 12 1972. But that aside, obviously the track list is from 'the inner mounting flame' 1971. Birds of fire was recorded1973 (nothing here) and anyway M.O.1 split and M.O.2 formed in 1974 and released apocalypse. That's not guesswork but facts and you sir have a very dodgy memory.
This is NOT1974. This band was history by then. His shirt says 74 for the #74 not the year. Read the book "Power, Passion and Beauty" to learn more about this great band.
By 1974 both Jan Hammer, Billy Cobham, Rick Laird AND Jerry Goodman (who are all visible and audible in this video) had all left the line-up. This original version of the band split up in 1973. In '74 Narada Michael Walden (drums), Gayle Moran (keys), Ralphe Armstrong (bass) and Jean-Luc Ponty (violins) had joined Mr. McLaughlin. This is common knowledge to anyone with the slightest interest in Mahavishnu Orchestra. But hey, I'm sure you enjoyed this concert - in 1972.
awesome musicianship!!!...MO is really a testament of vision & work ethic rolled into a synergized whole..the potential for anyone to be as good as this is there for all to grasp...its how much ,you as a musician wants it!!!...great post!!.
This is a very amazing example of how JM conceives of playing a "ballad" (first section of each solist's solo). Speed produces a relaxing effect by creating a wave of sound.
Sure, grazer770--search under "john mclaughlin gateway". The video series is called "The Gateway to Rhythm" and you'll find several videos posted there. Really opened my mind and helped me to understand how John hears rhythm. Enjoy!
I'm hearing the chord progression during the "A" section (the part in 6/4) as Am7-C/D-Fmaj7#11-Cm7-A/G-D. The faster "B" section (in 7/4) is Dm7-G7-Bb-F-C-G. Also of interest in breaking down JM's approach to composition is the instructional video he made about the kolokol approach to organizing rhythms, which is also posted here on YouTube.
If I could use a time machine; going to this concert back in 1972 outside in the sunshine when so much was going on politically and shit would be unexplainable.
The reason I heard this song in the first place was because someone told me it was his "favorite guitar solo". It blew my mind. To this day, it's my fave Mahavishnu.
All amazing players at the top of their game, but because no one ever highlights him, I would say the most astonishing playing on this comes from Jerry Goodman. Whatever happened to him?
As per Wikipedia: "After an absence from the public eye in live concert, he appeared on Gary Husband's Force Majeure: Live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2005, and even more recently, played with the San Diego based fusion group Hectic Watermelon."
Awesome, can't you travel back in time and fix the audio and make this HD or something? I only ask because you *are* bazonics after all... maybe add color as well. and make me a sandwich. whenever you get a chance. thanks so much for posting these amazing clips.
I agree with you f95ultra. But put John Coltrane , Charlie parker & Miles Davis in the mix too, They are not guitar players. But one can draw alot from them in the improvisation department. One should learn from all these guys & try to find one's own unique musical statement ,tone, atmosphere ,texture & voice on the Guitar. peace

There is NOTHING like the sound of a Fender Rhodes piano ! To me, it's one of the definitive ingredients in fusion. Also check out Herbie Hancock's "Thrust", and "Secrets". MVO is great fusion, so is Allan Holdsworth, and Return To Forever !
thanks for posting this. i to enjoyed being there at Skytop back in 72 with Mahavishnu and Ravi Shankar. What wonderful times on a beautiful afternoon. i only wish a sound recording of the concert was available
great stuff...saw them a few times, I was awestruck. Gotta love the portable video camera behind Jan in the first few minutes. It has been a long time, hasn't it?
Wasn't this track, or another live version, a full side on the album that showed a starburst cover? Love this piece, it's powerful and savage and is a massive fusion.
goddamn they were so frickin' GOOD! inner mounting flame is one of the greatest fusion albums EVER!! my favorite part is that jan hammer was in this group, and he went on to write all of the music for miami vice in the 80's!! amazing!!

What the hell is Elton John doing there?
And who put ants in his pants?
Jeez, what was McLaughlin trying to do; get in to the Guinness record as most pointless notes played on guitar?
Double neck guitar but still a crap tone on the instrument.
Self indulgence mixed with Indian spirituality...?
