I remember The Vespers performed by Jurgen Jurgens with Nigel Rogers and Ian Patridge back, I think, in the 1970s. They sang in a basketball arena at Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL. They were great, despite the poor acoustics. The house was packed, which was unusual for early music in the 1970s. I am convinced that half the audience had come expecting to hear Mantovanni!
Nigel Rogers made another recording of l'Orfeo on EMI Reflexe where he directs as well which is probably still available in CD. The playing is much better on the later recording.
Absolutely beautiful. I am lucky enough to own the CD of this performance also. It is very rare and difficult to find, but can be bought as an mp3 download from a major online retailer if anyone is keen to own it (I don't think I am allowed to say which one). Search for Monteverdi L'Orfeo directed by Jurgen Jurgens on the ARCHIV label and you will find it. Good luck.
omg I thought up to now that Deutekom is the only singer who produced coloratura gargles - it seems this guy does the exact same here. This is highly interesting from a physiological point of view but incredibly ridiculous as a sound quality and it does not fit at all to this masterpiece of music.
Coloratura must never resemble the sound of a duck (quack quack Ponsele), the sound of a chicken (clo clo Devia) or the sound of gargle (grl grl grl Deutekom)
OMG! I have been desperately searching for this CD in Amazon. I have Rogers Chiaroscuro recording, fine though as it is, was recorded much later. He still sings with the same virtuosity but he sounds so fresh here. Kindly upload more if you are able.
This sounds like the Jürgen Jürgens recording, which may have been the first ever made of this opera--and a fine one it was. I still have it on LP somewhere.
This recording stands as one of the greatest of all time. What Rogers is able to accomplish with his voice is unreal. It will NEVER be equalled by anyone!!! Thanks for posting this!
