the uk government attack its citizens for using or needing cannabis for medicine,,,they then allow GW pharmacueticals to grow tonnes of the same plant in kent,,,,,,,know thy enemy.
many comments are missing the point completely, this is not about demonizing cannabis, it's about exploitation of vulnerable people in a profit-making industry - it could be about illegal sweatshops making shoes and still make the same point. Very poor people are being abused in our home country and we should do something about it.
exactly right. this is not about "marijuana should be legalised" - look, i believe that - it's about exploitation of kids. people who smoke weed often tend to think of themselves as fairly laidback and kind, and regard weed production as ethical in comparison to the way people are utilised in other drug trafficking.
one is perfectly able to say "weed should be legal" AND "holy crap, i don't want kids to be suffering in order for me to get high".
@VoidDeluxe Labour exploitation already exists in many other trades. Clothing, handbags, electronics..anywhere there is money to be made there will be those who exploit others for the own personal gain. Can we stop it? If we shine the light on it and expose it ..hold the guilty accountable.
This story is obviously a beatup. Notice, they never say how many people end up in these "farms". This is because the fact that it rarely occurs ruins the entire exaggerated story. I thought AlJazeera was a good place to get a neutral story. But I guess not. Even if these stories were true, it's a reason for regulation of the cannabis industry, not a smear campaign.
What a disgusting effort to demonise cannabis. Modern day slavery etc? Everything terrible about these kid's situation is found more frequently around legal products exported to the West. The conditions described are all too common in mining, textiles & manufacturing in the 3rd world affecting far more children then the marijuana trade.
Decriminalise it. This and many other problems solved. Use will not increase, it'll simply come out into the open and could be taxed and regulated. Remember less harmful then alcohol; except for the dangers illegality itself creates.
@isarathai they will never, NEVER, NEVER legalize cannabis. You know why? because mighty factories of normal cigarettes would fail and go bankrupt and all their spending on technology and machines will be in vain.
And states do more money from taxes on the normal cigarettes anyway. Its a multi bilion bussines.
Cannabis shouldn't even be illegal. It's the governments stupid policy that is causing the problem. The "drug problem" is artificially created. Prohibition makes it a good earner because of the demand.
Lets not forget, Cannabis has been used by humans for thousands of years and was the corner stone of many an Empire. It's also a medicine, that has been demonized for profit.
Problem (artificially create) - Reaction - Solution (crackdown, loss of rights and control)
You know where children are not exploited for growing weed? California. Where it's legal. Where normal people can make a fortune growing it themselves and governments can get themselves out of debt by taxing it. There are no drug gang murders when normal people can grow. There is no exploitation. There is just a business, no different than brewers or restaurants.
Imagine what could be done with the money and resources wasted on chasing "weed-criminals".... The problem isn't drugs , its the laws that make it a worth while business.....
It's unfortunate cannabis is still illegal in Britain. Not quite a sedative, nevertheless cannabis IS a people-pleaser and "demotivating" substance. It keeps people indoors and out of the Government's business.
These are not children of the cannabis trade, they're children of the "War on Drugs". Most sane people understand that this policy has failed to deliver its purported results. What is has delivered is massive profits to criminal gangs and the law enforcement agencies who vested interest it to keep it going as long as possible. Like all wars supposedly fought for ideals it's actually prosecuted for profit.

Things could be worse, they could be in a sweatshop, or sex slaves, like many of the illegal immigrants.
To focus only on the Cannabis trade as a separate issue is somewhat exploitive in it's own right.

Just think how different things would be if Afghanistan had been able to renew their Hashish industry, instead of the Heroin trade.
Perfectly wonderful blond Afghani Hash was available for decades before the Russian invasion and all that's followed.
