  • Ok, I love this song, this band, and everything that they do. But can I just ask what the hell is Walter doing doing the first 2 minutes??? Love it... just had to ask....

  • no flie s on me

  • Wayne was brilliant even back then. Cool

  • @didyouseethatlight not nervous! I think, especially in the outro soloing, we see the energies of a man who's about to launch on the great improv trios with Carlock and LeFebvre. It's impressive that he finds a way to be generally true to his own musical ideology while playing a Green Earrings solo. Beasley is a good match here too, lots of "out" notes and free spirited jazzy playing. Krantz "My Old School" encore solos were an Art Crimes high point.

  • i found the tabs on the this site: axemagazine.it

  • Walter - stop soloing over the second verse!!!

  • Wayne has such a unique picking approach. I love it.

  • Wayne is just out there...you never know what to expect...and that is what's so damn beautiful about the guy.

  • wayne krantz tears it up on this

  • Yeah, I feel like he overplays a bit, but Wayne is still an amazing musician and really unique in style. He was possibly a bit nervous with the situation...? I saw Steely Dan and Wayne Krantz as Lead Guitar during that tour (Kansas City-Bonner Springs, August '96) and I remember he hammed it up. Of course his hamming it up is far beyond the best I could ever do.

  • Those were different approaches to the same song....and in this case Wayne took the song to a level where Fagen & Becker were not so comfortable with, that´s why JH kept the job...IMHO

  • @emgcarra I totally agree with this. You hit it on the head....

  • @spinningrooves Yeah I could see Becker and Fagen saying something like it isn't 'tasteful enough' or doesn't 'fit the song', thanks for posting this, Krantz is absolutely terrifying.

  • @emgcarra

  • Krantzs first solo is great! I mean he got every note over the chord changes you could possibly want. Just waiting for some idiot to post a video of him/herself covering it....?

  • Fagen looks like a white Ray Charles behind those keys (doesnt sound like 'em of course, but he's got the look down). And Wayne Krantz--ha! What a long way he's come. Liking that guy these days.

  • Go Wayne! :D

  • he sounds just like frank zappa

  • For me, this recording is up there with the Pat Metheny Group's Live Under the Sky in Japan performance of 'Third Wind' in 1992 for Best Ever Live Performance by A Band. What do other people think?

  • WAyne Wayne!!

  • Comment removed

  • captain jazz is going out of his way to distinguish himself as a cut above. This is all opinion of course, but wayne krantz SMOKES jon . I wanna fall asleep when jon starts soloing! my opinion is, for live guys so far:

    1 drew zingg

    2 wayne krantz

    jon harrington

    4 george wadenius

  • absolutely! zingg is incredible!

  • 'playing scales in some different modes' doesnt even make sense. Its just one of those things that people who know nothing about serious improvisation use to sum the whole thing up, completely missing the point.

Krantz is their stunt guitarist for the simple reason that he is light years ahead of everyone in that band both technically and in his skill in improvisation. if you disagree you should check out Krantz's solo stuff on spotify.

ps. check out Chris potter on their janie runaway.

  • Impressive the way that Krantz sticks to the general form of the Dias solo, but ends up taking it where he wants to go with it.

  • krantz is quite a bit more...adventurous i suppose, but i still like listening to JH just fine. becker is also good but i think he overplays/noodles a little sometimes.

  • Well put.

  • @musefan69 'A little sometimes'... diplomatic way of putting it.

  • @musefan69 .BUT... ya know what is odd.. is that Becker USED to play some pretty

Smmokin' solos.. ie, "Black Friday".. yet, these days he really never plays like that any more.. and I have to wonder why...he seems to have settled into this kinda noodly, cool style.

  • Wayne Krantz is simply an amazing guitarist with an extremely original voice. Does music have to have winners??

  • Green Earrings- Steely Dan live! 12 August 2006. (8/18)

look this up this case and point proves jon herington is better, especially when he trades fours with becker at the end!!

  • I am going to respectfully disagree. I think Jon is really good. But I don't think this particular solo is anything magical. But that's cool...music hits everyone differently.

  • @spinningrooves

I like Wayne better also. Drew Zingg is great too, but I like Wayne the best.

  • no disrespect to jon herington but you have absolutely no musical idea at all , wayne 's solo is unbelieveable , the hairs on the back of my neck jump not stand up .jon's solo is fine but not in the same zone as wk

  • Well they're different players that's for sure, but Jon plays jazz type licks with feel and style, Wayne is not bad by any means but he is playing scales in some different modes, cool, but not very musical

  • Look man,

wayne krantz makes jon herington look like a monkey with a hook for a hand!!!

The inventivity of Krant'z improvisation, for example 4:55, where the melodic motif is removed from the harmonic continuity, is simply outstanding.

The feel of Krantz's solo is indefinable, whereas Jon Herrington is merely functional in comparison.

  • And mibi, that's fucking bullshit

  • You exposed your blinding ignorance with the phrase "he's playing scales in some different modes". Sorry what?!

Krantz's underlying logic involves moving away from simple scalic passages, into a complex world of endless permutations of note grouping possibilities. And his solo is a voyage of spontaneous discovery.

Conversely, within THIRTY SECONDS of the 2006 rendition, herington throws in several old cliches based on 13th double stops derived from the G major scale.

  • He does this because people want to hear parts of the original solo, I talked to him about this in a lesson a few weeks ago; it doesn't have to be completely out there like krantz's solo, which I will again say is not at all bad-Jon's playing is just more mature and interesting to an educated listener

  • the outro solo is very cool too and I like what he does with it, but keep in mind the that jon had to share his space there with walter, not giving time to expand much

  • @CaptainJazz92

Interesting, going back to "Jon plays jazz type licks with feel and style"...

why does that make it any better??

The actual song is not a jazz tune and has an energy about it which is totally enhanced by Wayne's solo.

To be fair, it is unfortunate for Jon that he has to share with that other guy.

It is a bit naughty of you to presume you are more educated than mibi guy bcos you listen to jazz.

  • @CaptainJazz92

I don't believe Jon's solo is more interesting on the contrary i believe wayne's is more creative/inventive and is played with an energy and dynamic that is far more exciting for me than Jim (ooooo i've just dropped off) Hall.

talking of which have you checked out Krantz's trio, ironically w/Keith Carlock (+Tim Lefebvre) which to me contains a great mixture of intellect/expression/technique/groove/creativity ... etc etc

PS I do love Jim Hall really (apologies Jim Hall fans)

  • It is a rock song with a jazz element for one, and yes I do because jazz is the most complicated and the hardest to really understand/learn and appreciate, there is no argument against that.

I have listened to some of the trio stuff and it is cool. Also how in hell did Jim hall come into this convorsation??

  • @mibifinalist Nice description

  • How fast do people dispurse at a party when you begin one of these rants??.You present your view as if you are sharing a portion of your self-professed infinant wisdom.Trying opening your ears everytime you want to express your point, and you will be pleasently surprised at what you learn

  • His static solo relies heavily on the rhythm team behind him whereas Krantz creates his own polyrhythms throughout the solo -5:36

  • static? he leaves space, that's called mature playing

  • Nothing compared to Jon Herington.

  • Who?

  • The best guitarist Steely Dan ever had.

  • mmm i dont know... drew zing during alive in america was pretty good. herington is incredible though, no doubt

  • he is fast and flowing, but his note selection is bland

  • Perhaps you could post your version of this solo using a more suitable selection of notes? ;-)

  • ahahahhahhah aah! :)

  • Billy Hart on the tenor, ya'll

  • Killer, a bit much for Dan but wow what a mind and talent.

  • DAMN! Now I gotta start looking for this Wayne Krantz dude.

  • Wow. Ridiculous chops from Krantz. Love it.

  • HOLY F'N SHITBALLS!! Wayne Krantz is on FIRE in this clip, all the solo's are great but his at 4:44 is just jaw dropping good!!! You can tell he is flying by the seat of his pants too...a true improviser! Many Kudo's!

  • Completely amazing! :O

  • holy shit freaking awesome

  • maybe we can analize every aspect of wayne krantz's dna really what a bunch of loser's uh dude check out the solo at 220 and 550 there are no more great guitar players in this american idol world. do we really need guitar nerds telling us wayne is great ....no you are stupid.

  • wayne is great

    you are stupid

    f off hater

  • I pretty much love and hate the fact that Krantz is overall a very well kept secret in the whole music world. I wish more people knew about him and could experience his undiscovered universe of sound, yet it is still nice to be able to see him in small venues and not worry about sold out tickets. I have feeling that's gonna change though judging by the last time I saw him at 55 Bar. Whatever, spread the word

  • who cares what you think or feel fat boy.

  • obviously you do. you go around and whine on you tube. enjoy!

  • what could be better than Wayne Krantz and Steely Dan?

  • Jon Herington and Steely Dan

  • Krantz grooves so hard

  • Overlooked. Guitar solo, & drums + horn charts + B3 just sound fantastic. This one sounds as good live as on LP. I don't know how they do it except that they are true professionals.

  • Phew..saw Wayne in Sydney Oct08 with KC & TW. (At least on this clip i can follow the time sig. :-) ))) Ammmazing! Just when you think unique is gawn....although there are clips of them going back 10yrs nearly....Thanks for this post! and thanks Wayne K!

  • lead solo at about 220 is fine

    amazing run there

    and at about 550,

    watch the hands...

    thanks spinning...

  • absolutely amazing

  • krantz is the man!, so unique!

  • Krantz' last solo was awesome!

  • Spinningrooves, you have either been sitting on this for twelve years or I am just not up to scratch on my bootlegs, but a major thank you. I agree with your comments about Herington v. Krantz, but was happy enough to see the both of them on stage during Fagen's MTC tour. I'll only add two things: Big ups to Cornelius Bumpus (RIP). And anyone in the tri-county area who has not caught a small bar gig (like at the 55) featuring Krantz and Keith Carlock is doing themselves a huge disservice.

  • They have been playing so much with Jon Herrington in past years. He's good - for sure. I mean, in a way, he nails the "spirit" of the song....but Krantz takes the original to another land and it's freakin cool E V E R Y S I N G L E time. I truly dig his playing and style....

  • I love this dude! I studied with him briefly.

He set my musical approach straight.I can't get enough of his soloing. He is in a league of his own!

  • Wayne Krantz kills this stuff

  • Great song
