About the wigs. I'm 17 and have been Irish Dancing ince i was 4 and a half. to this day i don't know why, but down here in New Zealand we wear them too. We have the option not to in figure dancing but in solos im pretty sure they are compulsary. Yes they are a hassle, but if you're like me and have dead straight hair down to your tail bone (that was when i was younger, i've cut it now) its alot easier to put a wig on than do it up in curlers! =]
Woah your really good. I started irish dancing when I was 5. I live in Ireland so that was normal. What I dont get is why do you wear wigs? I was at loads of competions and I never once saw a wig in Ireland! It just annoys me that people wear wigs when the traditional Irish Dancers never wore wigs. And we dont have hair like that for the record:P
@xOXoxClarabellexOXox I Irish Danced as well, but I live in the USA and I never understood the Whig thing either, I thought I had to wear it because I was told too.lol I am now in college though, and have an Irish Dance Team, and being one of the captains we decided we didn't want whigs, we thought they were silly and a hassle. Plus I have naturally curly and "normal" looking hair anyway, so why alter it? I honestly don't know.
well done will you answer me a couple of questions please
1)am i to old to start just turned 15 last month and have become interested(oh and by the way i have 2 and a half years of tap and ballet under my belt.)
2)do i have to compete or can you just do exams like in other dance forms
you're never too old to start it however it may impact your results in competition as the people with whom you'd compete would have a bit more experience. but if you're just looking to learn it for the sake of learning it and having fun, there is not "too old."
im not entirely sure what an "exam" is lol. there are many people who i know who just dance at class, never compete and just keep learning new steps if that's what yo mean. if you can provide me with an explanation of "exams" i coud help
thnx erm an exam is where you learn a set dance then a certified examiner comes in and under exam conditions she tests how well you do that dance and grades you.after the exam you move on to the next dance.hope you understand
This was really good!I liked it a lot. I was actually going to be taught Irish Dancing by my great-aunt, but she moved to another town. But I would really learn to learn it because I already tap dance and I think this looks more challenging and fun to do!But good job though,
i dont know if it is more challenging or not (as i havent done both) but i do know that you could definitely find schools to learn from in your area. a google search would do but if you need help for a specific region, msg me over youtube and i'll get back to you with schools in your area :-)
irish dance isnt really that hard...i went for nine weeks and they entered me into a county compitition but then again i have been going tap dance for nearly 11 years....and they are quiet similar in there steps
they are similar in hard shoe steps and such but i do think that irish dance is judged on many more things than tap is: turnout, cross-over, posture, lift in jumps, etc. i dont know how hard it is compared to other dance forms and wont venture to say that its harder than tap. i think them to be very different and i dont know if you could really compare the level of difficulty already having a dance background b/c fundamentals of all dance are the same and having those make learning others easier
pull out two chairs, and practice getting your leaps between them, so place them shoulder width apart, and practice holding onto them and lifting yourself into a high leap, my only other advice is not to psych yourself out, don't think "If I do this, I'm going to fall" just do it, and also don't hold your leaps so long that you don't have time to put your feet on the ground again.
It's actually called Irish dance. There's no such thing as "River stomp". I'm sure if you googled "Irish dance in ____" in whatever city you live in (or by) you'll find schools.
i know irish dance is judged in different ways coz i went when i was younger but i quit coz the dance teacher would send me home in tears if i couldnt do something properly the first time and also tap dance is judged in different way....much of them are the same as irish dance and actually tap is very similar..the steps are quite similar.......but yes having experience in other dance forms would give me an advantage
for me, its better that i cry because they get the best out of me and my dancing by doing it. Because of them yelling, i am able to go so much farther with it and it makes me a better dancer and a much better competitor. Its different for everyone but i think it helps me a lot.
when people shout at me....it feels to me that i cant plz them no matter what i do....i now go tap dance...and my teacher never shouts at anyone...she understands that people learn faster then others but aslong as they try they're hardest and that she can see that they are generally trying she doesnt mind...and i have learnt alot easier becuase she knows that if i am given the chance i can do it eventually with out her having to shout
Yelling, while it can be drastically overdone, is a way that my dance teachers, and others, push those who they believe in most. when the dancer doesnt take it personally it helps them. It was SO hard for me to not take it personally at first, but once i finally got that it was to help me, i welcomed it. All dance forms have this while not every teacher does it. my older sisters ballet instructors were very exacting and only accepted the best and by doing it, the dancers turn out much better.
i dont believe that...i watch alot of dance shows where tap is involved ...and where i have attended before ...knowing that the teachers shout at the students i find they are scared to make an error...they dont dance well becuase they enjoy it..they do becuase they are scared to get shouted at...
just because that holds true for some people doesnt make it applicable to all. loving it is what keeps the dancers coming back after they get yelled at otherwise they would quit. even when im having a day on which i get yelled at, I love being there and dancing with my friends. Also, yelling doesnt persist all through a dance class pointedly at people unless they are being disrespectful or half-assing (pardon me) it and in those senarios i can see why a dance teacher would lose it and yell.
Ugh. So not worth it. I started Irish at a Traditional school, then moved and went to a more regimented one. It was a larger school, won more medals, entered more feisanna...'better' school by far, but filled with some of the worst people I have ever met. Teachers, students, parents. Horrible. No talent should come at the price of your soul, hahaha. :P
This performance was excellent, though; watching this makes me very sad that I didn't start Irish until I was sixteen. I'm never gonna catch up
There's hope! Yay! ._. Of course now i'm in college and have no funds or time for instruction...and have to cure my asthma...but I really loved dancing, short and stocky little thing that I am and all. :) My only question is, what can you do to practice? There is no space in the house I can hardshoe, and going outside is not possible because where I live it's 100-120 degrees F every day. Also, practicing on concrete and asphalt really hurts. Do you know any tricks?
i dont have much room to practice either so i think i can help you :-)
for practicing, i hardly ever go through my entire routine for lack of space. usually i pick my steps apart and just do the bits that i have the most difficulty with. also, i dont wear shoes in my house whether im practicing hard shoe or soft. i dance on my rugged hallway mostly. i dont know if thats possible for you but that what i do and i hope that helps. im short and a little stocky too so i feel ya there!
Also, this is really very impressive. It's almost impossibly hard to get a unified sound in hardshoe, especially with such a large group. Well done. :)
