the games replay value isn't too good, but that wont really be a problem cause theres lots of things to do in the final stages of game play. and beating the dhit out of bosses with awsome end-game powers is pretty fun.

this is the first FF game on this new gaming console (PS3), and naturally square-enix would try out new things to maximize the potential of the PS3, like graphics etc, thus the changes seen in this game.

As for sazh, he was alright in my opinion, i really liked him at first, but he started to irritate me a little.

@Jclops95 From what I hear it takes about 30 hours into it before anything big happens. Also, it's a very linear game compared to other FF games. I've yet to play it yet, but that's what others have told me.

@Villiscaband1 You don't have to buy the game for the cutscenes. You have the internet. Youtube probably has it. As a GAME, however, this game isn't for ANYONE (except those who apparently buy games to watch movies). Even then, the cutscenes try to put together a story that just doesn't work. Want to watch a good japanese movie? Anything from Hayao Miyazaki looks great and actually makes sense! (most of the time).
I love this game to death. I got it day one. I completed it and moved on, then played it again, completed it and moved on. I'm about 25 hours in to my third playthrough. Every time I playthrough it I discover more nuances with the combat system. I'm 5 starring almost everything on my first try. Good for me =l

japanese rpg's are ok but I wish that they'd stop cluttering up the entire screen during battles with a menue system. (for example: final fantasy 13, uggghhh~!!!). I'm sick and tired of "FIGHTING IN THE MENUE SYSTEM" and having to CONSTANTLY access it to do something, simply because, it takes away the fun of playing the game. The japanese need to learn from western type rpg's and not "over complicate the game play" as games like Fable and Mass Effect have already figured out and are doing.
My two problems with this game is (1) I never felt attached to the characters (Game killer in my book) and (2) the story felt belched out, not quite the unfolding and/or natural feel seen in other FFs.
This game was officially my favorite FF after getting it the end of last year. It's not the graphics (although i still do agree they were fucking beautiful) but the game itself just felt so strange for me, in a good way. First time i played through i always had a weird feeling playing it for what's gonna happen next, all questions being answered, it was a great game and my favorite FF and that's all there is to it. (P.S. it's a personal opinion, just saying before you comment and be a troll.)
Final fantasy fans are mega picky. And to all ff7 or any other final fantasy fagboys/fangirls please shut the hell up. If every final fantasy game was like ff7, 6 or whatever then I guarantee that people would bitch about that too. Just enjoy a good rpg like ff13. Personally I thought that ff13 had a great story and the battle system and graphics were amazing. My only complaint would be that there were many unnecessary accessories and that the over world was a little linear

I just got FF13 yesterday (been playing it for about 10 hours so far) and a 4 out of 5 feels about right to me. It's by no means the greatest FF, but it's still good and in no way deserving of the heaps of venom I see piled on it so often.
I do wish I could throw Hope off a cliff though. Why does every JRPG need to have an angsty, annoying kid?
@hotshot750 Disagree. FF7, 8, 9 and 10 are the best 4 Final Fantasy Games in my opinion. But, First of all, they will not remake 10, they'll only make an HD remake since it's already a PS2 game. Second of all, I'd rather see Square-Enix do a remake of FF8 as a 'test' to see if they'll do it right since you know that, if they remade FF7 and it failed, that would be a hugeeeeeeeee problem for everyone. We wouldn't want that now would we?
okay, i'll say it, i'm a graphics freak. while i appreciate all aspects of a game, the graphics are very important to me. which is the one thing that tipped the scale for between FFXIII and FF7. Graphics should be the last thing considered when playing a game. Generally when creating a game the creative team has a certain amount of time and money to make the game. From what I've been seeing the last 15 years is that these companies are more concerned about polishing graphics instead of polishing the game itself. RPGs used to have a novel feel to them where I could fill in blank spots using my own interpretation. Today the games are more movie like and it hurts!
@jayhow92 You explained Final Fantasy XIII in the most generic way ever. The story was awesome and I truly loved the battle system and all the characters. Characters actually had development throughout the story and even though I don;t care about graphics at all, they were beautiful.

@httm241 1. Turn off auto-battle 2. Give the game time. Chapter 3 is when it starts to get better and by Chapter 7 it's incredibly awesome. All RPG's have really slow starts. I'm guessing you're a shooter fan?

This and FF12 just didnt do it for me as I quit about 5 hours into the game on both. I know people say "Well then dont complain." Well I'm here to give my opinion on it. I think Square needs to start back at the basics like rebuild FF7 as we're still drooling over that teaser they put out about a couple years back. That IMO was a good game and this is just trying to mimick Mass Effect which is what Square shouldnt fall down the path of copying and stick to originality.
@hawkster81 FFXII was the same throughout the entirety of the game so I don't blame you. However, FFXIII gets much better quickly after Chapter 5. If you never pick it back up it's a shame since it does get a lot better. Oh well.
@hawkster8 Although I agree with you on spots I must disagree with you by using FF7 as the building block for the series. In my regard, despite how revered many gamers placed FF7, I don't think it is the best FF7 and in some respects it is the root of the problem. The best FF games were FF4 and then FF6; FF7 was a technical achievement in so many ways but as far as depth and story goes it wasn't the best game in the series.
this may have been a great game maybe,,,, but great rpg? for me it really lacked those elements that makes a good rpg. althought i will say it had the best graphics i have ever seen in any final fantasy game
i remember 12 kinda made me switch tactics alot well until i was able to find the best role i can stick with usually i just run with 2 tanks (sword and shield) and range healer/buff (character with a bow and alot of mp in which i control) ff13 doesn't allow me to do that anymore but that's what makes the game much more challanging and interesting.
@UndercoverCracker western style rpg makes things much easier than tradition jrpg instead of a queue for your next attack you got cooldowns on each skills so which ever skill hits "0" first your able to use. when jrpg has a queue on next move in general making you think and choose your next move wisely whether you want to heal, buff or attack.
Unlike most people, I actually thought XIII was a revolutionary RPG. I don't really care about a game being linear. I just want strategy and fun in an RPG. My username is a joke now. Pokemon offers no challenge. XIII is one of my favorite FFs so far, with VII as my favorite.
@toogodly69 yeah ff12 had a good battle system. a lot of people couldn't handle how different it was though. one things for sure - if they do it again, they need to fix the lag that happens in big fights. i was sure i would die in the final boss battle because it was lagging so bad

FF7 is still a great RPG and I agree. It was fantastic and still is fun but it's not the best game ever. I though love it for what it was, a great story with fun game play.
I agree, I enjoyed FF8 more than 7, BUT, 7 is put on a pedestal because it revolutionized rpg gaming, so, ya know, if your gonna revolutionize something, your gonna be recognized.
When you have a story driven game I consider three factors on whether or not it stands above the rest: story, characters, and music. Nobuo Uematsu was not in this Final Fantasy, the story to me felt incredibly confusing and as though it had to be explained through a datalog, and last the characters, to me, felt boring and incredibly hard to identify with. I have friends who enjoyed this FF, but it was the first one I have played that I didn't like.

THIS GAME WAS AWFUL!! I hated the battle system it was so stupid. The storyline=crap, and every 5 minutes you're going to another cutscene and every character was cheesy and lame, the worst final fantasy game by far
the main problem is that you CAN'T power level - you just waste time fighting overly long battles on normal enemies because if you miss them you miss experience while in the other final fantasy games the monsters just respawn or are in random battles.
@sireenn also final fantasies are MEANT to make you power level and if the game doesn't give me that it is a BLACK SHEEP and should be called something else BUT NOT FINAL FANTASY.
I'd give it a 3/5. Well-acted story, excellent graphics and sound(at least on the PS3 version), and the world(s) of Cocoon and Gran Pulse looked like something I'd actually care to find out more about. Unfortunately, it has few of the "role-playing adventurer" traits that made RPGs, both eastern and western, a fulfilling experience.
The game is not bad it is just boring most of the time. FFXIII sure is fresh air from japan and it is good to see that they are trying something new.
I did try to enjoy FFXIII but I could not. The gameplay is okay but just not my cup of tea, what really killed the game for me was that the story did not was boring and that it takes 25 HOURS getting to the fun and more open part of it.
Adam's reason for FFXIII's changes are interesting. The Japanese game market, especially RPGs, are losing ground fast to western games. Keiji Inafune said in his Interview with the New York Times that Japanese developers are at least 5 years behind the west (Stuck in last gen in other words) As Adam said, maybe XIII wasn't perfect, but it had nice ideas and risks which the genre will need in order to survive.
i agree with everything he said, I did enjoy FF13 because it was fun to play. I did enjoy the battles and the beginning of the story, it really sucked me in and seemed to be going somewhere good, but unfortunatly it didn't. For me at least, it dissapointed me. But I'm still glad I played it cuz it was fun, hopefully the next FF is better tho

I'm sick and tired of "FIGHTING IN THE MENUE SYSTEM" and having to CONSTANTLY access it to do something, simply because, it takes away the fun of playing the game. The japanese need to learn from western type rpg's and not "over complicate the game play" as games like Fable and Mass Effect have already figured out and are doing.

My two problems with this game is (1) I never felt attached to the characters (Game killer in my book) and (2) the story felt belched out, not quite the unfolding and/or natural feel seen in other FFs.

This game was officially my favorite FF after getting it the end of last year. It's not the graphics (although i still do agree they were fucking beautiful) but the game itself just felt so strange for me, in a good way. First time i played through i always had a weird feeling playing it for what's gonna happen next, all questions being answered, it was a great game and my favorite FF and that's all there is to it. (P.S. it's a personal opinion, just saying before you comment and be a troll.)

If every final fantasy game was like ff7, 6 or whatever then I guarantee that people would bitch about that too. Just enjoy a good rpg like ff13. Personally I thought that ff13 had a great story and the battle system and graphics were amazing. My only complaint would be that there were many unnecessary accessories and that the over world was a little linear

I just got FF13 yesterday (been playing it for about 10 hours so far) and a 4 out of 5 feels about right to me. It's by no means the greatest FF, but it's still good and in no way deserving of the heaps of venom I see piled on it so often.
I do wish I could throw Hope off a cliff though. Why does every JRPG need to have an angsty, annoying kid?

@hotshot750 Disagree. FF7, 8, 9 and 10 are the best 4 Final Fantasy Games in my opinion. But, First of all, they will not remake 10, they'll only make an HD remake since it's already a PS2 game. Second of all, I'd rather see Square-Enix do a remake of FF8 as a 'test' to see if they'll do it right since you know that, if they remade FF7 and it failed, that would be a hugeeeeeeeee problem for everyone. We wouldn't want that now would we?

okay, i'll say it, i'm a graphics freak. while i appreciate all aspects of a game, the graphics are very important to me. which is the one thing that tipped the scale for between FFXIII and FF7. FF7 was great, but the look of FFXIII was so amazing. it made me feel like i was watching an interactive movie which was awesome. so yea, i like FFXIII better:P

Graphics should be the last thing considered when playing a game. Generally when creating a game the creative team has a certain amount of time and money to make the game. From what I've been seeing the last 15 years is that these companies are more concerned about polishing graphics instead of polishing the game itself. RPGs used to have a novel feel to them where I could fill in blank spots using my own interpretation. Today the games are more movie like and it hurts!

@httm241 1. Turn off auto-battle 2. Give the game time. Chapter 3 is when it starts to get better and by Chapter 7 it's incredibly awesome. All RPG's have really slow starts. I'm guessing you're a shooter fan?

This and FF12 just didnt do it for me as I quit about 5 hours into the game on both. I know people say "Well then dont complain." Well I'm here to give my opinion on it. I think Square needs to start back at the basics like rebuild FF7 as we're still drooling over that teaser they put out about a couple years back. That IMO was a good game and this is just trying to mimick Mass Effect which is what Square shouldnt fall down the path of copying and stick to originality.

@hawkster81 FFXII was the same throughout the entirety of the game so I don't blame you. However, FFXIII gets much better quickly after Chapter 5. If you never pick it back up it's a shame since it does get a lot better. Oh well.

@hawkster8 Although I agree with you on spots I must disagree with you by using FF7 as the building block for the series. In my regard, despite how revered many gamers placed FF7, I don't think it is the best FF7 and in some respects it is the root of the problem. The best FF games were FF4 and then FF6; FF7 was a technical achievement in so many ways but as far as depth and story goes it wasn't the best game in the series.

i remember 12 kinda made me switch tactics alot well until i was able to find the best role i can stick with usually i just run with 2 tanks (sword and shield) and range healer/buff (character with a bow and alot of mp in which i control) ff13 doesn't allow me to do that anymore but that's what makes the game much more challanging and interesting.

@UndercoverCracker western style rpg makes things much easier than tradition jrpg instead of a queue for your next attack you got cooldowns on each skills so which ever skill hits "0" first your able to use. when jrpg has a queue on next move in general making you think and choose your next move wisely whether you want to heal, buff or attack.

Unlike most people, I actually thought XIII was a revolutionary RPG. I don't really care about a game being linear. I just want strategy and fun in an RPG. My username is a joke now. Pokemon offers no challenge. XIII is one of my favorite FFs so far, with VII as my favorite.

Around an entire day of gameplay before this game gets any good and it got a 4/5? Are you kidding? I'm highly disappointed with this review. I know Adam and Morgan don't write their own reviews or play the game themselves most of the time, but I'm still disappointed. I played this game and absolutely hated it. The combat system was awful and the story was dreadful.

When you have a story driven game I consider three factors on whether or not it stands above the rest: story, characters, and music. Nobuo Uematsu was not in this Final Fantasy, the story to me felt incredibly confusing and as though it had to be explained through a datalog, and last the characters, to me, felt boring and incredibly hard to identify with. I have friends who enjoyed this FF, but it was the first one I have played that I didn't like.

the main problem is that you CAN'T power level - you just waste time fighting overly long battles on normal enemies because if you miss them you miss experience while in the other final fantasy games the monsters just respawn or are in random battles.

I cannot count the number of places on Pulse that get you easily 100,000 CP in fifteen minutes.

I'd give it a 3/5. Well-acted story, excellent graphics and sound(at least on the PS3 version), and the world(s) of Cocoon and Gran Pulse looked like something I'd actually care to find out more about. Unfortunately, it has few of the "role-playing adventurer" traits that made RPGs, both eastern and western, a fulfilling experience.

The game is not bad it is just boring most of the time. FFXIII sure is fresh air from japan and it is good to see that they are trying something new.
I did try to enjoy FFXIII but I could not. The gameplay is okay but just not my cup of tea, what really killed the game for me was that the story did not was boring and that it takes 25 HOURS getting to the fun and more open part of it.

Adam's reason for FFXIII's changes are interesting. The Japanese game market, especially RPGs, are losing ground fast to western games. Keiji Inafune said in his Interview with the New York Times that Japanese developers are at least 5 years behind the west (Stuck in last gen in other words) As Adam said, maybe XIII wasn't perfect, but it had nice ideas and risks which the genre will need in order to survive.

I did enjoy the battles and the beginning of the story, it really sucked me in and seemed to be going somewhere good, but unfortunatly it didn't. For me at least, it dissapointed me. I wanted to play as Team Nora as main characters.What happened to the towns and the open fields? I should not have to spend 25 hours just for a game to open up. There is nothing fun from going to Ravager to Medic to Ravager back to Medic and repeat
