The school I work at just got a mac lab grant. Everyone hates the fucking things. Also, I can build a top end gaming pc for 1200 bucks. When you buy a Mac, you're pretty much limited to what Apple are providing, along with somewhat small scale upgrades. You could build a "PC" better than any Mac Apple are currently providing. His machine could be one of those rigs.

Macs use the same hardware available in PC's. The only thing you could ever argue that makes it "better", is the OS - and you could debate all day about that.
There's no clear line about which OS is "better" - but you have to consider that Mac OSX generally isn't catered to a wide selection of hardware (thus, generally making it slightly more stable on the select hardware Apple generally use). That in itself makes it an inferior choice for many users.
You keep commenting about how long ago your last comment was, or the fact that it's on YouTube as some sort of indication of how valid a response is. Stop being a massive hypocrite by responding under the same circumstances.
About the only thing a Mac has going for it, is the OS - and even then it's only positive depending on the opinion of the user.
Because of this, the OS is generally disregarded when it comes to Mac vs PC - as it's strengths and weaknesses are based on opinion.
On the technical / hardware side of things (the only "factual" basis for argument between Macs and PC), Macs generally fall short. Usually due to poor upgradability or limited variations of a machine.
So you can sit there - and argue all you want about how superior the Mac OS is. Someone else will come along and say "I'm using Linux on my PC" and blow the whole "Mac OSX is better because it crashes less than Windows" arguments out of the water.

Just because you say the average American has went through at least two machines with Windows installed, has nothing to do with whether Mac is better. Windows has had the majority market share for years, so if what you say is true, it's understandable.
Besides all of that, nothing was forcing those users to use Windows specifically, there are other OS alternatives out there.
And in regards to performance, you could build a more powerful, cheaper PC over a Mac.

When I built my PC, there wasn't a Mac on the market (and I'm unsure as to whether there is yet) that would come anywhere near close in regards to power, for the price that I built it. Anything near my machine would've been 50% more expensive, if not more.

That's funny. My PC, sitting not 30CM away from me, has a case made almost entirely from metal, which metal, I do not know. The only parts that are made from plastic are some clips used to hold in PCI cards and the like.

Welcome to the world of upgrading. You can't expect new OS's to run amazingly well on the same old hardware forever can you? XP is nearly 9 years old. Hardware that ran XP well might not run Vista well, for this obvious reason. If you has to spend so much cash, why not stick with XP? Did you need Vista?
Well actually, it was meant to be built for Vista and it cost £750 just for the tower, and it locked up after 10 mins, the whole thing, clean install....
and actually XP is nearly 7 years old, Media Center edition is 4 years old (it's XP Pro with a few extras).
You must've had some pretty bad, or pretty faulty hardware. £250 to get it to run well? Man, going from having hardware that caused Vista to lock up every ten minutes to getting it to run fast? I'd say £250 is a bargain.
Like I said before... Vista is only guilty of hogging RAM. Any other performance issues are negligible.

and well to get it to run fast I had to stick in a good GPU (I got a Sapphire HD 2600 XT (512MB GDDR3)) and a 1GB (400Mhz Normal Value RAM) stick of RAM (DDR2).

Listen - my machine was (when I bought it) and probably still is faster and more powerful than any Mac for the same or a reasonably higher price. Even running Vista.
Even if Vista is more of a resource hog than OSX, you could build a better machine to compensate for the difference in performance, ending up with a faster machine than the equivalent or higher priced Mac, and still save money.
If you want something cheap and to break down alot then get a windows if you want something that will last a long time and never get a virus. THEN GET A MAC! You should always judge on quality no price. That is why windows has to do a commercial on price not quality b/c they would lose on quality.

There are loads of reasons for that. Maybe it will be used at college / university, where looking at a smaller screen for long periods of time (like the 13'' Mac) would become a strain. Maybe she required a high resolution monitor - usually found with bigger displays.

When making comments about either OS, you have to consider that Microsoft don't have the luxury of making their OS work well with a specific set range of hardware. You also have to consider that many problems with Windows are related to buggy third party software, bad third party drivers or user ignorance.

A lot of my graphic design customers have been using XP for years. Some of them have been getting Macs after trying to use a new Vista box or new notebook with Vista.
Is the good experience you are having, with Vista, the result of the release of Service Packs 1 and 2?
In fact, when I built this machine I was using the latest nVidia cards in SLi, so even using young drivers I haven't had any problems. I'm using the 64-bit version, if you're curious.

Personally I work on Windows XP, my son works on Linux, and I bought my daughter a Mac, so everyone gets the best for him/her. As an IT professional I will never move to Vista and intend to buy a Mac for my next laptop, this is a well informed choice. My nervers are important to me. I am ready to pay $700 just for the chance to run MacOS, even for the same quality hardware (and it's not)
You need to take things more lightly, man. Many systems exist because people have different needs.
Different needs isn't the same as "ready to pay $700" extra for an unnecessary OS (because let's face it, do you need it? Will it do anything better over, say Linux or even Windows?).
You can always get a hackintosh with MacOS X, much much cheaper than an "official" Mac.
I like how you assumed I'm not familiar with MacOS. In fact, I'm very familiar with it. I used to work in tech support which also covered Macs.
Hackintosh is for hackers. The fact it even exists shows that real professionals also want MacOS, because it is better, and as professionals they can have it on cheaper hardware. For the rest of the people the best way to work on MacOS is to get a Mac.
Having said that, of course Mac hardware is similar to PC hardware, but there are many differences - from the quality of components (yes, the same Seagate hard disk comes OEM in 3 quality levels, did you know that?) to overall better design (...)

When you buy a Mac, you're pretty much limited to what Apple are providing, along with somewhat small scale upgrades. You could build a "PC" better than any Mac Apple are currently providing. His machine could be one of those rigs.
You do know that Macs use off the shelf hardware also used in "PC's", right? There's nothing stopping someone from buying superior hardware - where with a Mac, you get what you're given.

This isn't opinion. This is pure fact.
Macs use the same hardware available in PC's. The only thing you could ever argue that makes it "better", is the OS - and you could debate all day about that.
There's no clear line about which OS is "better" - but you have to consider that Mac OSX generally isn't catered to a wide selection of hardware (thus, generally making it slightly more stable on the select hardware Apple generally use). That in itself makes it an inferior choice for many users.

On the technical / hardware side of things (the only "factual" basis for argument between Macs and PC), Macs generally fall short. Usually due to poor upgradability or limited variations of a machine.
So you can sit there - and argue all you want about how superior the Mac OS is. Someone else will come along and say "I'm using Linux on my PC" and blow the whole "Mac OSX is better because it crashes less than Windows" arguments out of the water.
The only thing left is hardware - and it fails.

Just because you say the average American has went through at least two machines with Windows installed, has nothing to do with whether Mac is better. Windows has had the majority market share for years, so if what you say is true, it's understandable.
Besides all of that, nothing was forcing those users to use Windows specifically, there are other OS alternatives out there.

When I built my PC, there wasn't a Mac on the market (and I'm unsure as to whether there is yet) that would come anywhere near close in regards to power, for the price that I built it. Anything near my machine would've been 50% more expensive, if not more.

it's not the OS that's faster, it's the way the OS uses the hardware in a better way to get more power/performance out of the hardware.
Vista doesn't kill my computer, but that's because it's a higher spec, and I've had to spend about £250 to get it to run fast, from it locking up every 10 mins.

Listen - my machine was (when I bought it) and probably still is faster and more powerful than any Mac for the same or a reasonably higher price. Even running Vista.

Even if Vista is more of a resource hog than OSX, you could build a better machine to compensate for the difference in performance, ending up with a faster machine than the equivalent or higher priced Mac, and still save money.

If you want something cheap and to break down alot then get a windows if you want something that will last a long time and never get a virus. THEN GET A MAC! You should always judge on quality no price. That is why windows has to do a commercial on price not quality b/c they would lose on quality.

Quality, not price? Macs use off the shelf components - available in any PC. Macs are PC's, and I'm stunned most Mac users don't realise this.
If you want quality, go read a book on how to build a PC and do it yourself. Definitely worth the money you'd save. Hell, you don't even have to run Windows.

I have a problem with unfouded rubbish - especially when the people spouting it know nothing of what they're talking about. Macs or PC. Or anything else for that matter.
Also note: I'm a Windows user due to a number of valid reasons, but that doesn't mean I've never used Mac or Linux, or that I'm ignorant about either of them. I'd happily correct ignorance, whether it's in regards to Mac or PC. I'm fair.

There are loads of reasons for that. Maybe it will be used at college / university, where looking at a smaller screen for long periods of time (like the 13'' Mac) would become a strain. Maybe she required a high resolution monitor - usually found with bigger displays.
Considering the wording of your comment, I'm going to assume you don't have a clue anyway.

Apple don't make any hardware either.
Apple use off the shelf components. About the only thing they do make, is their cases - which look pretty, but aren't very functional.
When making comments about either OS, you have to consider that Microsoft don't have the luxury of making their OS work well with a specific set range of hardware. You also have to consider that many problems with Windows are related to buggy third party software, bad third party drivers or user ignorance.

Any issues that have ever occured during my use of Vista have been related to buggy third party software. Maybe any issues you encountered while using Vista were the result of user ignorance.

Besides that hypothetical assumption, the laptop she bought appears to be listed on the Best Buy website (the only $699 Pavilion). It actually uses an ATI chipset, and not an Intel GMA.
So basically, you made that up - probably to make out the machine is worse than it is. Probably because you don't have a clue about what you're on about.

A lot of my graphic design customers have been using XP for years. Some of them have been getting Macs after trying to use a new Vista box or new notebook with Vista.
Is the good experience you are having, with Vista, the result of the release of Service Packs 1 and 2?

I've never had issues.
In fact, when I built this machine I was using the latest nVidia cards in SLi, so even using young drivers I haven't had any problems. I'm using the 64-bit version, if you're curious.
I'm an artist myself :).

Personally I work on Windows XP, my son works on Linux, and I bought my daughter a Mac, so everyone gets the best for him/her. As an IT professional I will never move to Vista and intend to buy a Mac for my next laptop, this is a well informed choice. My nervers are important to me. I am ready to pay $700 just for the chance to run MacOS, even for the same quality hardware (and it's not)
You need to take things more lightly, man. Many systems exist because people have different needs.

Yes, it is. Some IT professional you are.
Different needs isn't the same as "ready to pay $700" extra for an unnecessary OS (because let's face it, do you need it? Will it do anything better over, say Linux or even Windows?).
You can always get a hackintosh with MacOS X, much much cheaper than an "official" Mac.
I like how you assumed I'm not familiar with MacOS. In fact, I'm very familiar with it. I used to work in tech support which also covered Macs.

Hackintosh is for hackers. The fact it even exists shows that real professionals also want MacOS, because it is better, and as professionals they can have it on cheaper hardware. For the rest of the people the best way to work on MacOS is to get a Mac.
Having said that, of course Mac hardware is similar to PC hardware, but there are many differences - from the quality of components (yes, the same Seagate hard disk comes OEM in 3 quality levels, did you know that?) to overall better design (...)

I've never seen different HP laptops with the same spec have two to three times the original price, because their components are manufactured at higher quality. Links please?
I'd assume it's because, oh say, the HDD is faster? The RAM is faster? etc.. There'll be some differences.
