  • THE KID FROM ELMONT WINS THE BELMONT!

  • -- Pace was moderate; he moved too soon and went too wide. Summing would have cleared a path for him if he'd gotten down on the fence and waited. The extra distance going wide cost him a photo at least. Gary Stevens said it best after the 1998 Belmont: "When you think you can't wait any longer wait another second. And when you've waited the extra second, wait a second longer than that."

  • I have a photo on my wall, I was in the winner's circle with JD Barton (owner, a friend) and Bold Ego at the New Mexico Futurity, Sept 1980....my god! 28 years agto!!!!!!

  • Haha I was fourteen years old when this race was run, called CNN three days before, asked Campo if a horse like Summing could steal it with a slow pace, and he said "never been done."

  • Made some good money on Summing. He was ripe for picking off the tired horses and had a :37 workout on the Belmont training track prior to this race...around the dogs!

  • I had my $5 allowance on woodcopper damn it.

  • Gad, look at how happy that couple is on the infield at the finish.

Strange race by Pleasant Colony. One of the few Triple Crown losers who was gaining at the finish, not fading, but he never put himself in threatening position.

I missed this race live also, taking a bus back from California to Florida once the spring term ended. I read the result in a newspaper rack outside a Carl's Jr. when the bus made a stop. Ha!

  • Hehe, a pair of happy people I see..
