  • Hi Ken if you will select just one size between concert & tenor . what will you choose? why?

    thank you.

I like kanile'a and plan to buy it in the future.

  • @TheTakeshi1967 The tenor. Can't say why. I only really play tenor. Have since sold this concert.

  • i bet soul sister sounds tight as fuck on that #swag

  • Ken - Would like to thank you for making and sharing this video. It helped me make my decision to purchase the very same Uke. I've joined UU and my handle is KimUke. Hope to see you there.

  • @KCLDWLL It is a great uke. I will probably sell mine soon. Only because I never use it. I prefer soprano or tenor.

  • what a beautiful instrument are they very expensive please

  • @bingcro Yes, they are expensive, but worth it. They cost about the same as a medium quality laptop computer.

  • do you have tabs for the song you played in the video?

  • @norich111 No, I was just making it up.

  • @KenMiddletonUkulele beautiful

  • @norich111 Thanks for watching.

  • Beautiful uke :) Great review

  • Thanks for watching.

  • Ken, do you find the fret spacing to be much different between the concert and the tenor? Which do you prefer playing? concert or tenor?

  • It is not very different. I rarely play a concert uke anymore, but that's just me.

  • Sorry, no.

  • Sopranino, Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone. At the moment the Soprano and Tenor are the most popular.

  • Hi, I said before in one of your other videos that I'm a beginer. I don't even have a uke yet, but I was wondering how many different types of ukulele's are there? Again any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Great Video, i was about to ask what were the difference between a Tenor and a Concert and you have explained it very well, you are a very good player, how many years have you been playing? I am a Beginner but love watching your videos.

  • I have been playing a few years.

  • Hey i c u have a lot of ukes well u send me a concert uke so i can learn how to play a song that my grandpa use to play on his uke...called my guitar gently weeps...i dont really have any money to buy a new uke cuz i use my money for school loans...hahaha. Thanks

  • Hi Ken! If i have a super concert, i have a same full tones of the tenor, with the brightness of the concert?

  • A super-concert will feel like a tenor to play and the strings are tighter and thicker than on a concert. However, the small body will give it a thinner sound. The sound is half way between.

  • Hi Ken - I want to purchase a K1 but am a bit nervous about ordering one online, unseen. Any recommendations? Rick

  • Find a dealer that you trust or travel to see one. This is all I can think of.

  • Do you purchase the ukes you review?

  • Yes, all of my early reviews are instruments I purchased, including this one. Later, instruments were sent to me. Now I work for Ohana.

  • don't worry, as soon as i think im ready, and have enough money, im sure i wont hesitate.

  • OK.

  • I'd love this ukulele, but if i bought it, id be afraid to play it for fear of breaking it. :) nice uke

  • Don't be afraid, buy one anyway.

  • Ken, what is the first song you play on this? I've heard you play it a few times and always meant to ask.

  • I was just making it up on this video. I later did another improv based on this and called it "My Lord's Codpiece". See other video.

  • Thanks very much. :)

  • Thanks for your post Ken. I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your instruments. You ukuleles are beautiful and sound fantastic.

  • Thanks very much.

  • i like concert sound

  • Thanks.

  • Ken - thanks for your review! I am shopping for a high end uke, and this is very helpful.

How do you think Kanile'a ukes compare to Kamakas? I have been leaning toward buying a Kamaka tenor, but I have heard lately that Kanilea's are considered by many to be much better. Do you agree?

  • I would certainly recommend a Kanile'a. I have only played one Kamaka though: a soprano. Can't really compare them.

  • yes i like your video of this, i am so into concert size uke, and this Kanilea concert just sound amazing, and the color of the wood is beatiful, do they have it in soprano

  • Yes, the soprano size is a little bit cheaper.

  • awe cool, but i bet the price is still above 500buks

  • I really enjoy watching your reviews, they're excellent. Also, i love how excited and happy you look to have gotten your hands on this Uke! :)

Where do you buy your instruments from now that the ukulele shop is no longer running?

  • I don't buy them anymore. In the UK there's: SUS, Musical Instruments (Cheltenham) Ltd, Duke of Uke and Music is Life.

  • Hi, Ken. I love your reviews. They've saved my TONS of time and money.

A question: It surprises me that the TENOR uke has the same pitch as the CONCERT uke. I would expect the TENOR to sound LOWER than the CONCERT. Your thoughts please.

    And MORE REVIEWS>

  • Tenor ukes have tighter strings which also helps to give them a fuller tone. But I have mine tuned down a full step.

  • This review is even better than the tenor ukulele review :) ! My question is, what are your thoughts on the distance of the strings from the wood (the "action", I think you called it?)? Are they easier to play or do you have to press down more on them like you had to on the tenor?

Your reviews are very useful especially for me, since I am a "more advanced" beginner looking to buy my second uke and first "real" one (My first offical uke is a Flea)!

  • Sometimes the action on any brand of ukulele is too high (better than being too low).

However, on a concert the strings are slightly slacker than on a tenor. this makes a concert feel easier to play.

  • how many ukuleles do you have?

  • Nine.

  • Oh wow! Do you have a favourite?

  • At the moment, my Kiwaya.

  • Thanks for the reviews! It's really helping me pick one out :)

  • Thanks.

  • This is my dream uke!!

  • I don't use this one as often as I should. It is the one I was going to bring to Indiana with me.

  • So sad you can't make it :( Hopefully it becomes a yearly event so I can see you play.

  • hi Ken,

where did you purchase that wonderful little ukulele? i have been looking for a great one, and i think i just found it :)

    how much did it cost?

  • i have a question, do any of your ukuleles get the buzzing sound?

how do you deal with it?

i have a tenor kala i just changed the strings to aquila strings and theres a minor buzzing sound on the second string (c string)

    theyre all nyglut btw.

    thanks.

  • The action may be too low and one of the frets may be a little high. Aquila strings are a little thicker than most.

  • your hawaiian could use a lot of work. otherwise great!

  • Great review as always. What was the tune you played? Any TABS for that?

  • Is the concert ukulele comfortable to play though? I kind of want a small cute little instrument to play. And i was thinking that the soprano would be way too small so i was considering concert ukuleles.

  • I have quite stubby fingers and I find the concert just fine.

  • Hey Ken.

I have been playing guitar for awhile now and i have been wanting to buy a ukulele recently.

I kind of want to get a concert ukulele but i'm not sure which size i want.

    Which one should i get?

  • You may find a concert a bit small. Many guitarist find a tenor more comfortable.

  • I tried my friend's ukulele a couple of weeks ago, and i'm now getting a concert ukulele. Will the difference be big?

  • It will probably feel the same as you remember. The size difference is only slight.

  • If your friend's ukulele was also a concert, you will notice the difference in quality. The Kanilke'a is very comfortable and nice to play.

  • For a beginner player, is it easier to start playing a tenor version of a ukulele and then stick to that size, or are they easily inter-changable, soprano on to tenor etc? Also in terms of sound, which one did you enjoy most? The tenor or the concert?. Sorry for being off topic.

  • The tenor has slightly tighter strings. For someone who has never played any stringed instrument before, it is best to start with the concert. For a guitarist, start with a tenor.

  • do u like the tenor or the concert version better?

  • No, I like them both. The concert is easier to play because the strings are not as tight on a concert. The tenor has a fuller tone that is great for finger-picking. The concert strums really well and the tenor picks out the melody well. If I only had one, either would be good.

  • Thanks Ken!

  • Ken, I've had a blast playing that jig with you today. What is it?

  • If you feel you almost can't fit in your house anymore because you've got too many ukuleles, you can store that one in my house - free of charge!

  • Sorry, it is a big house and ukuleles are wonderfully small. KEN

  • Nice try, no cigar I guess... It's a beautiful instrument and I'm a bit jealous

  • Hi.

Sounds like the Concert you've got is much mellower than your Tenor. Interesting how impression of a player differs from one of a listener.

  • It is certainly a lot more mellow than the Ohana. But it has the same sort of tone as my Kanile'a tenor. The tone on this tenor is obviously a little fuller.

    KEN

  • I was told that you shouldn't use a guitar pick on a ukulele. The gentleman at the music store I was in, said that a uke pick is made out of felt. Why is that?

  • Lots of people use guitar picks, including some in the Ukulele orchestra of Great Britain. I myself don't like using picks on a uke, but some do. Felt picks are a bit old fashioned now but were used for strumming. they are not really necessary.

    KEN

  • Absolutely awesome review. I just purchased a Kanilea standard with no gloss. I just love it. I do however enjoy mu Pono tenor. Great review. I look forward to more reviews.

  • Thanks Fernando.

    KEN

  • I've seen this review about ten times :) I just love it!

  • Thanks very much.

    KEN

  • Didn't you have a review up of the Cordoba concert ukulele? Or was I just dreaming that?

  • Sorry, no I didn't.

    KEN

  • Aloha!

I like your reviews very much. I had a Kanilea Concert high gloss but I wasn´t happy with my Kanilea. It was not loud enough because of the thick finish and there was a buzz at the 2nd string. Maybe a Soundmonster is louder. I prefer Koaloha to Kanilea (I strum most of the time). Again thank you for your reviews.

  • Hi ken, nice vid! what did the uke cost ? and where from?

  • Mellow is okay, but one can get mellow from a guitar or baritone. Give me a bright concert or soprano any day! :)

They're great sounding instruments! Thanks for the comparison.

  • I recently bought a tenor Kani'Lea "soundmonster" Great uke, unfortunately my lovely wife Laurie is in love with it so I think I may have to pick up anothr one ; ) the sound monster has a dull matte finish rather than a shiny laquer one . I like this because it is less slippery

  • Hurray! Christmas came early, lucky devil. I could see you were pleased as punch.

Thank you for the reviews. I think I know what I will get the next time I'm in Hawaii.
