  • I bought this album when it was brand new and I dont think it left my CD player for years... Pumpkins have always been my favorite band but I think Twilight To Starlight stayed in my CD played the most... Im just rediscovering this song now again and OMG I cant believe I had forgotten about this gem.

  • Nothing can ever compare to this song. It's really a masterpiece

  • I bought this album when it was brand new. 15 years later I'm still blown away.

  • @nosmotronic Hell yeah, it was my very first cd i bought. It was all down hill after that.

  • I've said it before. Combine the best songs from Mellon Collie on to one album and you have one of the greatest rock albums in history.

  • @whpriol1 which ones would you choose? and in what order? id love to know

  • this is another brilliant tune from the pumpkins.

  • greatest album of all time

  • best punkins song ever.

  • 1:54

Jimmy Chamberlin reminds everyone how amazing the drums can sound

  • Why can't everyone on earth have great taste in music like us?!

  • @MrShagasaurus Because we'd have no one to laugh at!

  • @maddog9513 your comment literally made me laugh out loud.

  • @MrShagasaurus i always think that haha

  • smashing pumpkinns v underated

  • @blacktheory fuk yea, me too...

  • Youth is wasted on the young !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shame they aren't this fucking amazing anymore :'(

  • here now it hits more than ever

  • i can´t discribe this song it´s so wonderfull that i have to listen to her over and over again. I remember the first time i herd this one i was amazed and when i eard it live i was blown up.

  • Fuck the acoustic part at the end just gets me.

  • @blacktheory It's SO beautiful..

  • Thru the EYES OF RUBY rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its such a TEASE that you hear 2 seconds of Stumbleine at the end of this vid!!!! ..now I have to go listen to it!!

  • just found how great Smashing Pumpkins are. I've been blind -or, better, deaf- for at least 4 years. now I have opened my ears!

  • am i the only one who hears it speed up just a teeny teeny bit at 0:22? i LOVE it

  • this is the way a song must end

  • Man I miss music of this caliber.

  • Problem today is we are always in a rush to hear the next song on the radio so we dont get the epic nearly 8 minute songs on the radio unless you're on a classic rock station.

  • Do I want more songs?

  • Your strength is my weakness, your weakness my hate.

My love for you just can't explain, why, we're forever frozen.

Forever beautiful. Forever lost inside ourselves.

  • I have seen them live about 7 or 8 times. Saw Billy play in SF on his solo gig. That was pretty cool with the light show. The most amazing show was at the Arco Arena in Sacramento. Like 1995. Holy smokeadoshis, that was the shizzy. The last show was in San Diego about a year ago. WTF no opening band! We were out drinking in the car and when we got into the stadium and they only played three more songs. I flipped my lid. Still not the same without James and D'arcy, and Jimmy.

  • I agree about the last 50-60 seconds, this entire song is beyond legendary, but I wish he made another song with the last part, cause that minute is one of my faves in music history

  • "omg, im 13-16, modern music sucks, i like old music (names 50 old bands), boo-hoo, i'm retro"

fuck off already, no one really cares. Every generation has good and bad music. You think there wasn't hairmetal pop garbage back then too? There was.

  • aaaah 1994 Detroit...we had tickets to the 2nd show which was moved to the State Theater...one of the best shows ever...more legs in the air than heads!!

  • 6 People Don´t Have A Reason For Live

  • Best album ever. Now i envy the lucky bastards that got to be teens during the 90s

  • off of my fav sp album. best 2 discs youll ever listen to. i can never get sick of this album no matter how many years i listen.

  • my favorite song and i truly mean that

  • this song is the closet to suicide you will get.

  • Oh...now I know where Scott Pilgrim title for Vol 3 comes from :P

  • @CoCoSkol Yup. When I saw that, it made me HAVE to finish that movie. You never see references to the Pumpkins. So when I do, I show my respect.

  • @IzzyLovesRock have to? Oh I like that movie :( A lot actually and love the books. What didn't you like about it? I can see why it might not be for everyone

  • @CoCoSkol Naw, it was fine. But I didnt plan on watching the whole thing. But I decided too when he made a SP reference

  • @CoCoSkol Yeah, I also noticed he wore a ZERO * shirt during the movie too :D

  • Everytime i hear it my 13 year old self comes running back. I'll be a kid forever as long as this exists.

  • i love his poetry. it takes forever to fully appreciate but when you do it's the most beautiful thing. it becomes a part of you

  • ruby :)

  • a "drown" mellett a legszebb daluk ;)

  • @Flagellator1974 azám, mindig lenyűgöz :D

  • best rockmusic ever!!! thx sp!!

  • Thanks Dylan. You made my night bro.

  • One of the reasons I named my daughter Ruby.

  • Oh my gosh... This is so beautiful... I can't describe it! :o

    Look at 6:55...

    I'm still thinking in it...

  • beautiful and one of their best....love it soooo much...thanks for sharing this wonderful song!

  • the night has come, to hold us young...

  • 70 guitar tracks!

  • this song is giving me gossebumps and muscle spasms in a 94 degree F room.

  • I'm really stoned and listening to this song right now is fucking amaaaazing, its magic

  • @NosferatuNite I'm really high off of warheads and listening to this song right now, it's frikin amaaaazing

  • @NosferatuNite

Smashing Pumpkins- best thing to listen to when high!

  • sent up to the heavens at 6:55

  • openning 20sec great!

  • chicken skin. 3:03

  • @thickerthanblood00 chicken skin? interesting. I'll have to use that one :D

  • Billy likes things done his way. The first 4 albums were pretty much done all by him, other than the drums by Jimmy. He did that cause he thought he'd get them done faster and with less screw ups than James and D'arcy.

  • my favorite part is 0:00 - 3:34, the reason i didnt put the rest is because i didnt hear it, i was knocked out cold by the awesomeness

  • Your strength is my weakness, your weakness my hate

My love for you just can't explain

Why we're forever frozen, forever beautiful,

    Forever lost inside ourselves

  • always thought the last 50 seconds are the beginning of the next song :O

  • ya i love that line 'youth is wasted on the young' I remember that had a powerful effect on me when I first heard' thru the eyes of ruby'..I was 17 and now I'm in my late 20s..this song is bittersweet..billly is a lyrical genius..sadly though meeting him in the flesh was rather a negative experience for me..

  • @libbyglow can i ask why? i have heard rumours that he's quite egotistical, i am just curious :)

  • @libbyglow what happend? i heard he was kind of an as$

  • This song is all about Motoko, niggers.

  • @ootman786 im exactly in your position right now. :)

  • @ootman786. RIGHT ON DUDE! you're a lot cooler than the kids i used to hang out with when I was 14 that didn't like SP. and my friends that are 30 and don't like them anymore now that they're 'all grown up'. you didn't miss anything because MUSIC IS TIMELESS.

  • @ootman786 You havn´t missed shit. You listen to STP, I mean how much better does it get? :)

  • they mastered the major scale and explored its dark facets more than anyone else.

  • @ootman786 really crazy to me (but really cool too) that kids your age like the smashing pumpkins so much, i see lots of kids saying what you said

i got this album right around the time it came out and i was 8 (long ago!), good to see this music survive through to the younger generations!

  • @hoacky At a guess, sounds like a slow wah wah with a fast tremelo (flanger?)

  • I was born 1979 so they hit me at exactly the right time - so many people saying this and I wouldn't be honest if I didn't admit their albums as a teenager were like a religion to me. The imagination, honesty, beauty; incomparable.

  • @ootman786 dont listen to anyone who's critical of your love for the Smashing pumpkins. i love some bands that were before my time and get chills listening to them and appreciate them.i wish you could have seen them live (amazing!) but i didnt get to see the doors ot the beatles live either. i think it's awesome that the next generation is into it! :)

  • @ootman786 I dont know if you will or not. But I am in my late 20's (pumpkin prime) :-) and have written poetry that pertains. Check it out if you want (ryandavidmillerpoetry((dot))com - i am major published and saw that you were 14 and listen to this... welcome to reality unseen!

  • this song brings back so many memories. I used to listen to this CD on repeat. This was my favorite song

  • its true what he says about spinning your love around. we all are self motivated and have selfish tendancies. if you really examine your emotions and the way you treat others youll find that love is an illusion. a lie you tell yourself to get what you want.

the secrets of your dreams part is also brilliant. our dreams speak in symbols. and what seems so impossible about it is that they speak in the same symbols. an example is that flowers mean true love.

  • This sounds like the same guy as in the band Zwan. I like it. Are these guys just a new band?

  • @mclick13 har har

  • @ootman786 YOU TELL 'EM LITTLE BUDDY! FIGHT AGEISM! Your musical ear is transcendental. Let 'em all hate!!

  • The greatest band of the 90's end of fucking conversation!

  • @fletcheyboi : agreed. nirvana was good. but they had nothing on this bands essential 3 albums: Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie.

  • Last 30 seconds are the best.

  • The most beautiful & complete SP track of all time, almost rock operatic in its execution. Complete with elements of Queen, Bowie, Meatloaf, Alice Cooper, The Velvet Underground... truly Corgan's master stroke.

  • @ootman786 ino right? Im fourteen, I listen to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Dylan, Rolling stones, and a tonne more retro bands. God I hate Cheryl Cole and Ndubz, or wahtever that crap is. Older music had so much more meaning to it, it was soo much deeper and more beautiful than the repetititititititititive crap mountains that exists in the minds of my fellows!

  • @Cookietrooperstudios couldnt have said it better.

  • @ootman786 Right on man!

  • dorian grey again?!?!?! "the night has come to hold us young!!!!!!"

  • The good thing about being young is that you have all the music from the past to chose from. The only bad part is that you can't ever be a crazy fan and see them 20 times live like I did when I was a teenager. Great choice though.

  • The last 50-60 seconds of this song are enough reason to live.

  • @Oryannmusic r u a poet? I just loved how u put it...

  • @Oryannmusic I always thought that part was good enough to have warranted an entire separate, full track with lyrics. I've actually listened to this song just for the ending. :)

  • @aSafePlaceToHide Same here.. haha. I always find myself skipping (not that I don't love the rest) to that part, and rewinding and rewinding.. It really should've been a whole song. One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written IMHO. Love how it has that MCIS instrumental reprise tone, but tuned down. Makes you wonder if it WAS part of another song :).

  • @Oryannmusic Who knows, maybe some day they'll release a bunch of tracks that never made it on the album. You'll also hear the MCIS reprise at the end of "Farewell and Goodnight", another gem on Mellon Collie. My other personal favorites are 33, Stumbleine, Beautiful, and Muzzle. :)

  • @aSafePlaceToHide awesome :). Yeah Farewell is also a personal favorite. I loooove Beautiful. That, Lily, 33, Stumbleine, and Here is no Why are my favs. I also love everything on Aeroplanes, especially Pennies and Rotten Apples.

And you're right, maybe they will. Let's hope so....

  • @aSafePlaceToHide Its called "The Aeroplane Flies High" lol

  • @aSafePlaceToHide all the unreleased songs from the Mellon Collie era were released on the 'Aeroplane Flies High' boxset, it contains about 35 songs if i remember correctly - they are well worth checking out, especially songs like 'cherry', 'medellia of the grey skies', 'set the ray to jerry'

  • @williampatrickcorgan Cool, thank you.

  • @Oryannmusic this entire song gives every reason to live... it is one of the most beautiful things i have ever heard.

  • @Oryannmusic not enough.

  • 2:40 do it.

  • @Oryannmusic Last 60 seconds are so good,it should have been a separate song.

  • @MrShagasaurus Definitely : ). I always thought the same thing.

  • totally agree with ootman. im 16 but i dont want to listen to no fuckin lady gaga this music is the shit

  • Without the Smashing Pumpkins my youth would be truly wasted.

  • hurray for 90's music!:)

  • awwwwwwwwww blissssssful

Fairplay ootman, you're onto a winner with the Pumpkins

  • Such a great song

  • 6 guys failed to recognize the best song ever...

  • thank you, Thank You ,THANK YOU!!! (blowing kisses like a prom queen) the live versions do not touch james' riffs on the studio version. i swear it feels like my hair is gonna blow back when he bounces those strings!!!

  • @wanagi006

bc wrote and played the riffs in the studio.

  • Pumpkins really ARE my youth.

  • Porcelina of vast oceans is also a curious listen! Ruby is my fave Pumpkins song! Corgan has fallen so hard, and he knows it! He needs to be less arrogant and more of an extremely mean fucker

  • This song tells me to do acid and PCP at the same time!!!! And if I am still alive, maybe a cigarette and ecstacy.......If that doesn't work, then you are GOD!

  • u may find your love is gone it was not quite wht it seemed!

  • I have always been a big fan of the Pumpkins...

  • Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness were about on par with almost any rock and roll and had greatness. It is what happend after that which why the pumpkins are not as revered as they should be. God bless the pumpkins my childhood band!!!!!

  • Louder! Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

  • but no one's asking for the truth, so let me tell you. if you spin your love around, the secrets of your dreams, you may find your love is gone, and was not quite what it seems, to appear to disappear beneath all your darkest fears

  • @ootman786

I'd sell a testicle for the chance to be 13 in the year 1990. Seriously.

  • @rolandocbf Deal

  • @airwalkcrazy360

You get the time machine,I'll get the scissors.

  • @rolandocbf I'd sell both haha. No but seriously...

  • Still My Favorite Song After All These Years

  • The night has come to hold us young!!

  • the night has come to hold us young

  • Great job, truly!!! I love it.

  • One of my favorites from them. That entire album is just breathtaking.

  • @ootman786 Commas dude use commas dude

  • People complain about this record being bloated, but it is what it is. A concept album. You have to view it from an artistic statement to really appreciate it.

It's not a greatest hits compilation, it's a record of great songs that flow together to form one big picture....

  • What a depressive and beautifull song... when you're sad, listen to this masterpiece and you'll be comforted in your sadness, but a great sadness !!! that type of sadness that let you balance on the edge of life... and death...

  • @fredoxyde ...manic-depressive! x D...i love this fucking song too...i remember eating "San Isidro" mushrooms here in México and listening this song on my old school cd player up on a real high hill, rainy and watching a far away lake... and everything around me was red and green colour, i´ll never forget that!!

María Sabina must be rolling on her grave!! : )

  • Youth is wasted on the Young!

  • @RIZO214 My favorite SP quote

  • @RIZO214 It is inherently ours. You've had your chance!

  • the night has come to hold us young

  • Is it me or is the riff at the very end on the acoustic one of the greatest riffs ever?

  • @MTVrocks Yes, it's incredible... too beautiful.

  • Brilliant song.

  • 6 disliking jerks need their behinds kicked...

  • The first disc was better but this is one of the few greats from the second disc. IMO every song after X.Y.U. sucked.

  • @WickedLiquid Don't you wish they (Billy) had stayed with the Siamese Dream sound?

  • @Loctorpse Nah, I'm glad they were bold and tried something new. I just wish they had gone for quality over quanitity. They could've taken15 good songs from Mellon Collie and just released them on one disc. Because the songs that are actually good on this album are amazing, this being one of them.

  • @WickedLiquid Yes, this album is horribly bloated. They could've done a full album and then maybe an EP or something. The last thing I ever bought from them was the Aeroplane Flies High boxed set. After that I couldn't stomach them anymore.

  • @Loctorpse I disagree. I think this album is pretty much a masterpiece. Easily their greatest album. It was the last one I brought tho.. For me, they fell off after this.

  • @Loctorpse Watch them live.

  • @Loctorpse the mid-90's was the era of 2-disc cds... I had 2Pac All Eyez On Me, Michael Jackson HIStory, Soundgarten Superunknown, etc. Great marketing ploy--with some filler material and drawn-out interludes/skit, records could sell at double the price--even paid a month's allowance to on Mellon Collie just to get "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" (was a 5th grader at the time) Now that iTunes has 'unbundled' individual tracks from the albums themselves, 2-disc albums more or less obsolete

  • I believe Mellon Collie is still the best selling double album ever.

  • SP sucked me out of this stupid emo stage i was going through a few years ago...i don't know how i'd be now if it weren't for them...thanks SP, you changed my life!

  • @livinglandfill dude im glad you came around, this music is so real and pure

  • this song had over 70 guitar tracks... incredible

  • @zoomzoomkid11 really?

  • The best song they ever did :)

  • @ngrockyjocky you are damn right:) 90's music is the ultimate ruller of music

  • that outro killz me every time!!!

  • sorry dude but FOB rules. you should take a closer listen. i love my fair share of 90s, but you can't hate on FOB no matter how hard you try

  • @jetblackninja11 Music is a matter of taste. Modern emo stuff, such as fallout boy I cannot stand. Most modern stuff is all whining about girls and how the lead singer has become heartless. It's horrible x12

  • I believe in never, I believe in all thw ways

but believe is not to notice, believe is just some faith

and faith can't help you to scape

  • I wish they did more proggy stuff like this. It's a shame they really didn't work more on their technicality.

  • An epic masterpiece

  • glad to say ive seen them live.

  • Smashing pumpkins rock.I love them. They r way better than Creed.

  • I kill myself everyday for not being alive during the time this greatness began.
