  • It looks like you use windows, right?

  • isn't it magificent what humans have been able to do?? and how sad it is that every 20 odd some years, we'll have magnetic storms from the sun and potentialy ruin all of it.

  • So the sounds it makes is normal? Because my notebook have been making this sound whenever i use this in a quiet room. I'm a paranoid bitch :(

  • @manofdamatch For older laptops and desktops it is, however you should always back up your data. Your data should always exist in two locations just in case.

  • @joshuamarius Mine is less than 5 months old.. Will take your advice then.. thank you!

  • That is so cute.

  • so thats what that clickin noise in the computer is

  • wow!! lol i have the same hard drive in my laptop im using right now o.o . lol its older but it works great ;]

  • Will It Blend?

  • i luv how they work !

  • notebook Hard Drives's are better then desktop hard drive's because they can hold more space and use less energy

  • @bigdady2700 Not true. Desktop hard drives > notebook hard drives. Think about it! Why else would desktop's not use notebook hard drives? Notebook hard drives are more expensive for every GB then desktop also desktop hard drives are bigger[both in GB size and actual size] Don't know about energy though.

  • i like the sound that they make its cool how they work!!! =D

  • @joshuamarius Hi! I have salvaged an old hard drive from my acer laptop and I figured out that I couldnt find the 5volt power connector. Can you help me? The model is: HTS421240H9AT00

    Thanks!

  • Hey i'm not crazy good with computers like some people. Whats an ssd? It has no moving parts i think. Isn't like flash memory?

  • @wolfrider910 Correct. Wikipedia has a very good article regarding SSD.

  • so that's what it was! Every time i have my computer on it would makes this ticking noise! I don't mid it i actually like it! But it was the hard drive! I learn stuff yayy!!!!

  • 11110010101101110110000000000111111000001111111100000000111100110101010111101101011111110000000011000000010000011001110101100000000000111111011111101111

  • It sounds like a thousand small clicks when the head moves lol

  • I think the hard drive is the most interesting part of the computer imo.

  • I love taking apart really old harddrives for computers that are way out of date.

There are disks that are better quality than a mirror and uber duber strong magnets that are a lot of fun.

  • so THIS fucking thing is what's making all the damn noise in my laptop?

  • Hard drivre rulz :) you can do this with ssd :D:D

  • @NamelessNLS Of course not :D:D SSD is boring. :D

  • format is very cool

  • i don`t hear the sound like that O_O i only hear EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound O_O

  • Nice video , the moving part the had - fork has two side -arm , one bellow the disk you dont see and one over which reads the disk, I have dismentaled mine too , its a lap top hard of 40 GB, very nice job , thamk you, mine is dead so just showing the parts.

  • THANKS!

  • is data recoverable after a full format ?

  • @BKISHANN Yes. There are utilities that can help you, such as GetDataBack, R-Studio or Easy Recovery Pro; just install the hard drive as a Slave or secondary drive on a computer and scan.

  • @joshuamarius there is also aq program called easyrecovery but the free version is only for 30 days

  • @BKISHANN "is data recoverable after a full format ?" good news is yes! despite of some tools that may scratch some bits from such a drive all your data is 100% recoverable if you simply restore your latest backup.

  • Cool indeed. Imagine how easily it could make a bad script...

  • wow thanks for sharing!

  • the little one is cute :D

  • kawaii !!

  • Not a chance buddy, dump that girl THIS INSTANT!

But,. thank you for posting this video, I was always curious as to what this would look like. Sorry people are spamming the hell out of it . :(

  • It all starts to make sense when I hear the yip.

  • why doesn't full format do the complete swing rather than half

  • The litle drives are so cute. I don't understand why they use glass for the "platter".

Seen at least three of them shatter after being dropped.

  • they use glass because it doesn't dilate when it builds up heat :P ceramic-glass composite is used now on the newer, high-capacity hard drives

  • @ChronicMist

    That is cool. Thank you

  • wow i now know that laptop hardrive can havestepper motors too COOL!!!! xD :D LOL Awesome!!!! :D!!!!

  • magnets.

    too bad it died

  • thats really cool

  • But have this tiny 2.5 inch HDD died some time after this video or not?

  • Yes, it did.

  • Oh, poor HDD :(...

  • Good video, Joshua. The tiny 2.5'' HDD is a piece of art in my opinion.

  • this video is 5 minutes too long.

  • Your life is 5 minutes too long.

  • your dick is 5 inches.

  • ...that's about average for my age.

    Pfft, dumbass.

  • Um Most mens dicks are 5"

  • @Dallion100 and you should know shouldn't you

  • what is the point of showing the hard drive to the left???

  • Size comparison.

  • hello. i have a hitachi 160gb that died (no power) and i order anotherone for hoping to make a replacement of the circuit board in order to recover files.. do you have a tutorial on hdd pcb replacement / swapping? never done this in my whole life.

  • PCB board replacement is not a recommended step to make your drive power back up. In some cases you may even damage the drive more. If you need critical data recovered then please send me a private message and I can get you the information of a reliable data recovery company who will work with you to retrieve data.

  • is this sound(reading-writing parts) normal for 5400rpm hdds? i heard they sound louder than 7200s, is this true?

  • That depends a lot on the manufacturer and model. Some drives are quieter than others, regardless of the RPM.

  • i have a 7200 rpm ata/pata HDD using it for my system and u cannot hear a single sound from it not even movement, i love it overall its good in a very quiet pc

  • There be dogs in ur hard drive. WOW dog spelled backward is GOD. SO there is GOD in ur hard drive. Oh mighty hard drive.

  • @ thiagotecnico

Not quite sure why people gave you thumbs down for your comment! I fully agree, the HDD is an old fashioned technology and yet is in use today in most modern computers! I know SSD will eventually take over, but the transition is taking a long time and should have taken place ages ago!

  • His comment to be exact is that typical HDs are old and he also mentioned 500 GB SSDs. Well, I know they are outdated, but they get the job done for less than $60. A 500 GB SSD averages more than $1000.

It's very similar to telling everybody to get a hybrid car, when they can barely afford the one they have now.

  • boring

  • Wow, those hdd's wont live for long after this run! ;)

  • 6 GB

  • Looks horribly fragmented..

  • Wow!!!

  • WOW! I didn't know they worked like that! Good Video!

  • I think the small drive is quite cute :)

  • what an old technology used nowadays don't you agree? come on 500gb SSD

  • As old as it is, I guarantee it will remain with us probably for almost another decade. Not everybody can afford SSDs and I would have to say that HDs today work pretty well, yes they fail, but they get the job done quite nicely :)

  • sound like crickets lol

  • 1:44 look how fast its going!!

  • my laptop disk tray will not play disks but it will close the disc starts to read but then just stops can anyone offer any help ?

  • Check to see if the laser is stuck. The drive might have also gone bad.

  • Damn! It's so fast!

  • Cool dog man :)

  • I couldn't take my eyes away in case I missed something. Less action next time please I'm worn out now. Think I'll go for a lie down . . . phew!

  • funny

  • when youre open a hard drive and its off, then you can throw it away :-D

  • what?

  • Aren't Hard disks normally vacume sealed to stop damage from dust? So how long do these HDDs last before they oxidise and start to loose data?

  • I'm sure they're plated with something... possibly even silvered. and I think theres like a cloth lining on the edge that help prevent dust entering the actual disks.

  • They aren't vacuum sealed, but they are sealed from dust. There is a small, filtered hole that allows air pressure to equalize. Most drives have something on them like "don't cover any drive holes".

Hard drives would not work with a vacuum inside (the heads must fly on a layer of air.)

Secondly, the platters won't oxidize. The risk in opening a drive is that the dust/hair/fingerprints can cause a head crash.

  • cool, didn't know that.

  • hdds are on the basis of magnets. if they atre exposed to the air, the slowly lose their charge. the oil from your finger prints has no effect. hte pressure for touching them, however does.

  • Oh wow. Absolutely everything you said was complete, unbridled bullshit.

And no, The platters on the harddrive will not lose their charge over time if left open, because the dust would have long ruined it before that would ever happen.

And secondly, the head of the harddrive hover over the surface of the platter at about 0.0000010 +/- 0.0002 mm, So naturally of course a fingerprint would cause instantaneous an head crash as soon as the read\write heads attempt to travel past it...

  • ok, but the individual sectors have a magnetic charge.

  • so at the very tip of the arm does it touch the platter at all?

  • Its 1 or 2 micrometers away.

  • Oh my god ..:O

  • i have a question im buying this hard drive off new egg and will it say when i click on computer 2 hard drive or one ill tell you what it is.western digital 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache sata/3gbs harddrive ome also when it says 3gbs does it mean ram

  • Depends. Some laptops can hold 2 hard drives. If this is the case, after you install the new drive, you will have to go to Computer Management, then Disk Management and create a new partition & format it. Then it will appear in your My Computer as a 2nd drive. 3.0Gb/s is not memory, it's the speed at which SATA 2 or SATA II, or SATA 300 is known for (theoretically). The memory on the drive is known as the Cache, the higher the better. Finally the RPM is the speed at which the drive rotates.

  • thancks for this vid i didnt realise they spun at such high rpm

  • Thanks to upload interesting video. I'll not anxious about a little vibration on my laptop any more because HD head does like a vibrator itself.

  • pretty funny... I've never seen how my laptop HDD looks like

  • what size hardrive would my toshiba satelite l30-10y laptop use 2.5or 3.5

  • Laptops use 2.5". The question is, is the hard drive IDE or SATA. The Toshiba L30-10Y uses Serial ATA or SATA.

  • damn......... wonder how many trial and errors it took to perfect this a harddrive

  • Excellent question :)

  • thanks man mine didnt come with a very big hardrive so i lan to upgrade

  • We need change!

  • woof woof!

  • for a hard drive, that sure is one hell of a noisy bastard. I got 7200rpm 3.5 inch drives (desktop standard size) that are quieter than that. cool vid though

  • It's an old drive - that's why it is so loud. I also needed a loud one to show the public where the noise is coming from :p

  • i have a problem with my laptop dell latitude d810 when i turn it on in says INTERNAL HDD HARD ERROR! what should i do? Please help me out!

  • It's possible that your hard drive might have gone bad. Take it out, inspect it and re-insert it. If you get the same problem then your hard drive gave up. As a last test you can try connecting it to a different computer and see if it works. I don't have a problem inspecting it for you as long as you pay for the shipping :)

  • say if you have partitons how will u see the pointy thing reacting when you access different partitions and what it is the pointy thing anyway?

  • The pointy thing is known as the Disk read/write head. This hovers over the big round platters you see and reads/ writes data to it.

  • cool... I never knew that's what the needle does when it reads/writes, moves fast at the start!

  • Now I know why if my laptop's Hard Disk is working, it's sound like clickclickclicklclick.

    Thanks for this video, roflknowledge!

  • It's just noise coming out from it xP

  • pretty cool. I never saw a hard work without a cover. I thought they died once exposed to air.

  • its atualy the dust not the air, so if its a dust free zone u can open it, or can just hope 4 the best in a normal room lol

  • It also has to do with the vacuum it creates, so tell friction for the needle on the disk thus less power etc.

  • Genial. Muy gráfico y educativo. Primera vez que veo como funciona un disco duro. Gracias.

  • Very informative. I like how you can see how the drive responds to typical commands

  • The 3.5 inch drive is a samsung and the smaller one, well i dont really know. look at my vids for the samsung drive.

  • Fujitsu, it's written on the cover :)

  • I hope your never going to use that hard drive again... just with a little bit of dust, its possible to corrupt information

  • some folders might never be readen

  • Anyone heard of error 2000 0141 ?? how to fix it ?

  • That is a Dell Pre-boot System Assessment (PSA) error code meaning "No drive detected". You should run the PSA diagnostic process which can help you determine the cause of the problem. No drive is not a very good sign, but it could just be a loose connector.

  • my computer gets red fucking hot when i have it running for a few hours [my laptop]. is that normal?

also you should post a vid of what happens to the hard drive when you highlight all the icons on your desktop and push enter... or ctrl+a or whatever you do to open all the things on yore desktop at the same time.

  • Depending on your hard drive, your laptop will get hot. 7200 RPM drives in particular tend to produce a lot of heat. Make sure you don't cover the vents when you use it, and also make sure they are free of dust, nice and clean.

I may make a third video showing more actions.

  • i always wonderd why computers made noises....

  • is the hard drive supposed to be barking like a dog ? =P

  • This hard drive in particular yes because it is very old. Newer hard drives are way more silent.

  • lol i ment because the dog in the background was barking heh.

  • Oh, LMAO. What can I say, my little chihuahua is a little Alarm :)

  • lol =[)

  • haha

  • very very interesting!! good work! one question: is this clacking noise normal?

  • Yes, it is the head doing its work: Reading and Writing to and from the disk. However since this hard drive is old, this operation will be a bit louder. Newer drives are way more quiet than this.

  • I remember when hard drives used to sound loud like that.

  • 1999. The ThinkPad I have for sale... sounds like a 486... ON THE GO!!!

  • My hard drive stopped working i need stuff off it 4 months of work what can i do there must be something im willing to do anything please some kind man help me im gaggin

  • Like others have done, send it to me with a $20 money order to cover shipping expenses. Once I get it I will do my best to retrieve the data (free of charge). If I cannot then I just ship the hard drive back.

  • I would have liked to see some dust being poured onto the spinning platter and then a Head Crash.

  • I agree joshua! I don't think some people have anything better to do on here but start a pointless conflict. Thanks for the great video. I own a computer business and this is a great video to show my customers who are curious.

  • Are you high? I doubt you were in a clean room because if so you would be wearing gloves. You do know the tiniest speck of dust can destroy the drive head...right?

  • Calm down, relax. By clean I meant a room that was kept very clean and dust was nowhere to be found at the time. Of course I know that there's microscopic stuff flying around, thats why I used an old hard drive, because I knew it would eventually die once opened.

What amazes me is how how most comments posted on YouTube are in a tone of just wanting to start a conflict...jeez.

  • man that little arm works bloody hard!

  • poor hard drives, they'l never work again :(

  • those are probably old and useless, but this guy found a new gig. SHOWBISNIS

  • They're working right there on the video. (and yes I know its easy to brake it when u open it but long as u dont touch anything.... Just dont store andything important on a hard drive thats been open,)

  • Sweet!

  • Sweet!

  • nbice work

  • wow that's pretty crazy. ;/

  • AH I see!!! Thats what makes the sound when I copy files etc!

  • neodimium magnet

  • it only takes one speck of dust to damage the platter or heads, and you probably shouldn't use it for anything important

  • it would have been cool to see him dump and eraser shaving or something on the spinning platter

  • That would have killed it.

  • that was awesome. now i know alittle more about how the computer is working. thats like a work of art and science in one thing that no one would appreciate otherwise lol.

  • thats a really old laptop drive. by the sound of it , the motor is not FDB

  • Wow im gonna buy tht and put a small record on it and it will play super wierd!! lol.. LEME BUY MUHAHAA LOL

  • i wonder how it does everything?

  • if it had 2 heads, it would improve performans. for file copy commands, 1st head would read from source and 2nd would write to destination track..or 1st head handles reads/writes to fat/ndfs area and 2nd head handles the data area r/w only. they could also split large data transfer jobs into two and reduce time by %50

  • due to thermal issues that is not an option. Look around google and you'll understand. Moreover, the reason HDD's are so cheap is because they are mass produced. If it were to have 2 heads (its no longer mass produced) AND has x2 increase in failure rate.

  • Hard drives have 1 head per platter side. Can't really see here, but the 2.5 probably has 2-3 platters! As far as I know, one head is used at a time.

  • humans have crazy inventions. but this is so amazing

  • You've probably just got all kinds of cancer for doing this. lol

  • kl;kl;lk;kook;lk;

  • its amazing what hard drives can do

  • basically a record player. this whole system needs to be entirely revamped. even the zeros and ones system seems limiting.

  • how/why? its the single reason modern computers were able to be developed

  • its kinda funny... in some weird way,,

  • cool

  • haha nice.

you got to love the laptop HD.

one problem that i have at the moment is that mine is running hot..the more you use it the hotter it gets .starts from 25c up to 56c not good..but there is no way you can cool it.. .. the laptop is a ...Toshiba satellite a 200...let me know.

  • i have a lower capacity of that drive in my laptop. exactly the same sound

  • I like it when the dog barks at 3:47
