isn't it magificent what humans have been able to do?? and how sad it is that every 20 odd some years, we'll have magnetic storms from the sun and potentialy ruin all of it.
@manofdamatch For older laptops and desktops it is, however you should always back up your data. Your data should always exist in two locations just in case.
@bigdady2700 Not true. Desktop hard drives > notebook hard drives. Think about it! Why else would desktop's not use notebook hard drives? Notebook hard drives are more expensive for every GB then desktop also desktop hard drives are bigger[both in GB size and actual size] Don't know about energy though.
@joshuamarius Hi! I have salvaged an old hard drive from my acer laptop and I figured out that I couldnt find the 5volt power connector. Can you help me? The model is: HTS421240H9AT00
so that's what it was! Every time i have my computer on it would makes this ticking noise! I don't mid it i actually like it! But it was the hard drive! I learn stuff yayy!!!!

hello. i have a hitachi 160gb that died (no power) and i order anotherone for hoping to make a replacement of the circuit board in order to recover files.. do you have a tutorial on hdd pcb replacement / swapping? never done this in my whole life.
PCB board replacement is not a recommended step to make your drive power back up. In some cases you may even damage the drive more. If you need critical data recovered then please send me a private message and I can get you the information of a reliable data recovery company who will work with you to retrieve data.
i have a 7200 rpm ata/pata HDD using it for my system and u cannot hear a single sound from it not even movement, i love it overall its good in a very quiet pc
Not quite sure why people gave you thumbs down for your comment! I fully agree, the HDD is an old fashioned technology and yet is in use today in most modern computers! I know SSD will eventually take over, but the transition is taking a long time and should have taken place ages ago!
His comment to be exact is that typical HDs are old and he also mentioned 500 GB SSDs. Well, I know they are outdated, but they get the job done for less than $60. A 500 GB SSD averages more than $1000.
It's very similar to telling everybody to get a hybrid car, when they can barely afford the one they have now.
As old as it is, I guarantee it will remain with us probably for almost another decade. Not everybody can afford SSDs and I would have to say that HDs today work pretty well, yes they fail, but they get the job done quite nicely :)
I'm sure they're plated with something... possibly even silvered. and I think theres like a cloth lining on the edge that help prevent dust entering the actual disks.
They aren't vacuum sealed, but they are sealed from dust. There is a small, filtered hole that allows air pressure to equalize. Most drives have something on them like "don't cover any drive holes".
Hard drives would not work with a vacuum inside (the heads must fly on a layer of air.)
Secondly, the platters won't oxidize. The risk in opening a drive is that the dust/hair/fingerprints can cause a head crash.
hdds are on the basis of magnets. if they atre exposed to the air, the slowly lose their charge. the oil from your finger prints has no effect. hte pressure for touching them, however does.
Oh wow. Absolutely everything you said was complete, unbridled bullshit.
And no, The platters on the harddrive will not lose their charge over time if left open, because the dust would have long ruined it before that would ever happen.
And secondly, the head of the harddrive hover over the surface of the platter at about 0.0000010 +/- 0.0002 mm, So naturally of course a fingerprint would cause instantaneous an head crash as soon as the read\write heads attempt to travel past it...
i have a question im buying this hard drive off new egg and will it say when i click on computer 2 hard drive or one ill tell you what it is.western digital 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache sata/3gbs harddrive ome also when it says 3gbs does it mean ram
Depends. Some laptops can hold 2 hard drives. If this is the case, after you install the new drive, you will have to go to Computer Management, then Disk Management and create a new partition & format it. Then it will appear in your My Computer as a 2nd drive. 3.0Gb/s is not memory, it's the speed at which SATA 2 or SATA II, or SATA 300 is known for (theoretically). The memory on the drive is known as the Cache, the higher the better. Finally the RPM is the speed at which the drive rotates.
for a hard drive, that sure is one hell of a noisy bastard. I got 7200rpm 3.5 inch drives (desktop standard size) that are quieter than that. cool vid though
It's possible that your hard drive might have gone bad. Take it out, inspect it and re-insert it. If you get the same problem then your hard drive gave up. As a last test you can try connecting it to a different computer and see if it works. I don't have a problem inspecting it for you as long as you pay for the shipping :)
That is a Dell Pre-boot System Assessment (PSA) error code meaning "No drive detected". You should run the PSA diagnostic process which can help you determine the cause of the problem. No drive is not a very good sign, but it could just be a loose connector.
my computer gets red fucking hot when i have it running for a few hours [my laptop]. is that normal?
also you should post a vid of what happens to the hard drive when you highlight all the icons on your desktop and push enter... or ctrl+a or whatever you do to open all the things on yore desktop at the same time.
Depending on your hard drive, your laptop will get hot. 7200 RPM drives in particular tend to produce a lot of heat. Make sure you don't cover the vents when you use it, and also make sure they are free of dust, nice and clean.
Yes, it is the head doing its work: Reading and Writing to and from the disk. However since this hard drive is old, this operation will be a bit louder. Newer drives are way more quiet than this.
My hard drive stopped working i need stuff off it 4 months of work what can i do there must be something im willing to do anything please some kind man help me im gaggin
Like others have done, send it to me with a $20 money order to cover shipping expenses. Once I get it I will do my best to retrieve the data (free of charge). If I cannot then I just ship the hard drive back.
I agree joshua! I don't think some people have anything better to do on here but start a pointless conflict. Thanks for the great video. I own a computer business and this is a great video to show my customers who are curious.
Are you high? I doubt you were in a clean room because if so you would be wearing gloves. You do know the tiniest speck of dust can destroy the drive head...right?
Calm down, relax. By clean I meant a room that was kept very clean and dust was nowhere to be found at the time. Of course I know that there's microscopic stuff flying around, thats why I used an old hard drive, because I knew it would eventually die once opened.
What amazes me is how how most comments posted on YouTube are in a tone of just wanting to start a conflict...jeez.
They're working right there on the video. (and yes I know its easy to brake it when u open it but long as u dont touch anything.... Just dont store andything important on a hard drive thats been open,)
that was awesome. now i know alittle more about how the computer is working. thats like a work of art and science in one thing that no one would appreciate otherwise lol.
if it had 2 heads, it would improve performans. for file copy commands, 1st head would read from source and 2nd would write to destination track..or 1st head handles reads/writes to fat/ndfs area and 2nd head handles the data area r/w only. they could also split large data transfer jobs into two and reduce time by %50
due to thermal issues that is not an option. Look around google and you'll understand. Moreover, the reason HDD's are so cheap is because they are mass produced. If it were to have 2 heads (its no longer mass produced) AND has x2 increase in failure rate.
one problem that i have at the moment is that mine is running hot..the more you use it the hotter it gets .starts from 25c up to 56c not good..but there is no way you can cool it.. .. the laptop is a ...Toshiba satellite a 200...let me know.
It looks like you use windows, right?

Are you high? I doubt you were in a clean room because if so you would be wearing gloves. You do know the tiniest speck of dust can destroy the drive head...right?
theblackwidower 3 years ago
Calm down, relax. By clean I meant a room that was kept very clean and dust was nowhere to be found at the time. Of course I know that there's microscopic stuff flying around, thats why I used an old hard drive, because I knew it would eventually die once opened.
What amazes me is how how most comments posted on YouTube are in a tone of just wanting to start a conflict...jeez.

it only takes one speck of dust to damage the platter or heads, and you probably shouldn't use it for anything important

it would have been cool to see him dump and eraser shaving or something on the spinning platter
affsuck 3 years ago
That would have killed it.

that was awesome. now i know alittle more about how the computer is working. thats like a work of art and science in one thing that no one would appreciate otherwise lol.

i wonder how it does everything?

if it had 2 heads, it would improve performans. for file copy commands, 1st head would read from source and 2nd would write to destination track..or 1st head handles reads/writes to fat/ndfs area and 2nd head handles the data area r/w only. they could also split large data transfer jobs into two and reduce time by %50
groundctrl77 4 years ago
due to thermal issues that is not an option. Look around google and you'll understand. Moreover, the reason HDD's are so cheap is because they are mass produced. If it were to have 2 heads (its no longer mass produced) AND has x2 increase in failure rate.

Hard drives have 1 head per platter side. Can't really see here, but the 2.5 probably has 2-3 platters! As far as I know, one head is used at a time.

basically a record player. this whole system needs to be entirely revamped. even the zeros and ones system seems limiting.
