  • Does this stuff work for melanoma also?

  • GIVE ME MY GOD DAMN DATA DAVE

  • This guy is so passionate it just eminates outward. We need more people who care this much! Awesome talk!

  • Speaking of medical 'professionals' denying a particular anti-cancer treatment because they don't have it: cannabis, the plant, makes anti-cancer compounds. The raw data is in; cannabinoids induce the death of damaged cells, thereby destroying tumors while also acting as an anti-inflammatory & improving blood flow to areas that need it for proper recovery. This scientific fact is up against a culturally-biased false-notion of 'pot-heads simply wanting to praise pot' but, the science is in.

  • my dad is currently battling advanced kidney cancer, what is the name of the drug he mentioned? any help would be much appreciated. thank you

  • @DMcLeanUWE interleukin

  • In march of 2005 (when moribund from more than twenty deadly diseases at once) I combined the systems of the world's leading authority on diabetes with those of two Research Brain Metabolism Biochemists to invent the 120Year Cell Nerve Regeneration Diet. It worked; I've recovered from everything; BUT I CAN'T GET ANYONE TO LISTEN TO ME - SO I HAVE TO WATCH THEM ALL DIE!!!

  • In march of 2005 (when moribund from more than twenty deadly diseases at once) I combined the systems of the world's leading authority on diabetes with those of two Research Brain Metabolism Biochemists to invent the 120Year Cell Nerve Regeneration Diet. It worked; I've recovered from everything; Cancer, COPD, Diabetic Blindness; etc. I now have normal health and all normal blood chemistries

  • OK, maybe that is what its like the States, but I dont believe its like that here in the UK. You are touching on the fact that culture currently dictates the behaviour. You have a different health system, you put the whole onus on the doctor, and if he is wrong he must pay a price. My original point though remains, Doctors have the ability, the desire, and the resources at their hands to be a far more exploratory, open minded, creative. We all have pressures, it is human instinct to overcome

  • guys, what is the green lantern? thanks.

  • Unfortunately giving people raw data via the internet would completely destroy net neutrality.

  • This idea is a great way to reduce health care costs.

  • Wonderful ! I too am going through a similar situation. I speak on YouTube about several other healing options to cure cancer. See links at the cancer bitch on YouTube

  • Doctors don't listen to patients. They usually disavow any info you contribute. They are too smart and don't have time for it. It's sad.

  • Amazing man

  • the ppl who disliked this video are some mutherfuckers

  • Green Lantern @15:16 lol

  • :))

  • I'm a doctor and i definitely agree that patients are an underutilised resource, however access to raw data, in my experience can create far far more problems than if that information was channeled through a proper communication. I believe that training doctors to properly communicate this information is the answer to the solution, not access to raw information for everyone

  • @Shikaradin66 I've got type 1 diabetes, 38+ years and counting. For us we use data like blood glucose readings ALL the time to help decide whether we need to eat or take insulin. I really liked Dave's Give Us Our Damn Data. It's so hard to get readings out of all the devices we use and see them in a health dashboard. For folks with diabetes this might make a huge difference.

  • @bernfarr For Diabetes i totally agree, however there is a marked difference in being able to read a BSL level and intepret that, versus reading an MRI. Some raw data is acceptable, other forms of raw data will create far more problems than solutions. Many doctors in specialities other than radiology have immense trouble intepreting imaging results, nevermind the general public.

  • @Shikaradin66 You're right. Reaching that balance is critical. I'm not a doctor but I've looked at enough of my chest x-rays with a doctor that I can get some of idea of what might be happening in a new one. I'd still not want to interpret that without the help of a radiologists reports.

So both the type of data and the education level and awareness of the patient are critical in helping reach a decision about what to share.

  • american healthcare is fuc ked

  • Agree 100% with Kema. We want to empower patients with info, data and treatment options, but what info, data and treatment options? The internet is a double-edge sword. That's why Dave emphasises so much on getting FACTUAL info and not some unproven info and mumbo jumbo treatments. Also patients usually share their own experience which at best is anecdotal. It might not stand up to more than just placebo effect. Alternative "therapies" might seem to work but do they really work, objectively?

  • A look at the teleprompter: 01:21

  • While it can help, a lot of time internet info can be harmful too because it's not regulated in the same way. Just take a look at the bogusness from anti-vaxers, XMRV/CFS, homeopathy, chiropractors, etc.

It's a good idea, but a lot of people don't know how they could use their raw data let alone interpret it correctly, and anything like google body needs to have all the information certified by specialists.

  • @KemaTheAtheist Regulated like what? You can books hailing "homeopathy" and therelike in any library.

  • @595o

    "Regulated like what?"

Regulated by actual doctors, peer-reviewed research, and clinical studies.

  • @KemaTheAtheist Ah OK, well you can get that too on the Internet, I still fail to see how to see how the Internet is a worse communication medium for scientific medical stuff when you can find BS also in books.

  • @595o

Because those books never sell well, but if you have CFS, you're going to learn about XMRV and that craziness. If you have an autistic kid, you're going to hear about the anti-vaxers.

Books on craziness don't spread. Stupidity on the internet spreads like wildfire.

  • @KemaTheAtheist The Bible. ;-)

  • @595o

    That's religion, not pseudo-science.

  • LOL. At the rapping. This clip is so awesome, it is so optimistic and inspiring. Thanks for uploading.

  • hemp oil ?

  • Huh is dit in Maastricht?!

  • Nice Chap! :)

  • In Europe we have now something of a "Unicard", but it doesn't have any actual information, just numbers. I think it's time we have something (chip-card?) with our vital data: not just health, but history, school, jobs, workshops, curriculum, associative sports, etc, and that WE can access or share too.

  • wow...

  • 15:10 Green Lantern also likes this

  • What an AMAZING person!!!! =D he was so fun to listen to, very entertaining and informative! =D

  • Very good talk, rap and all!

  • I had to skip over the grandpa rap.

  • haha, go bless yourself you motherblesser

  • Made my eyes sweat

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that HIPPA is largely responsible for this new technology not being developed. Fear of data security being lax, or personal medical data being leaked out, is a large disincentive for people who would otherwise innovate.

  • @eagleeye1975 Agreed HIPAA is not understood and the 'rules' are not uniformly interpreted. For example, the someone at Joslin clinic once told me I couldn't take a copy of some data of MINE because of HIPAA. Whereas HIPAA specifically gives me the right to get a copy of my data.

  • I really, really, really, really, really like this guy!

  • So in the end; Open data!

  • BEST VIDEO EVER.

  • Brilliant!

  • impressive

  • Hes the Hans Rosling of Patients

  • Dude he was rapping, what a fucking beast

  • Our rights to our own personal data are being taken from US each time the Supreme court rules new and expansive free speech rights for corporations. Every time the Supreme court defines the data collected by a doctor or an insurance agent to be legally treated as corporate speech protected by the 1st amendment, copyright law and intellectual property law "We the People" have less control over our data or any recourse to gain control of our data. Corporations are NOT living entities NOT CITIZENS.

  • Someone needs to remix that rap

  • Great talk dude!

  • Excellent ideas!

  • Very cool!

  • What an amazing personality...great speaker

  • Fabulous talk

  • `lol that rap was hilarious

  • 2:06 If you can see earth from the position of the Moon Landing , Why can you Not see any trace of a Moon Landing from Earth ??

    Just a Question ..

I dare Anyone to Prove me wrong .. show me a pic of the rover , taken from earth ..

  • @oicub2 well the landing module is a bit smaller than earth. it's like showing a car on earth in the picture shot on the moon. there is no earthbound telescope that good.

  • Comment removed

  • @oicub2 nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/apollosites.html

  • @VirtualArcheologyBln they should have used a better photo shop .. i've seen better pictures of UFO's & aliens ,, But i will accept it if we can Reproduce it from an independent source .. Google Moon only shows a 3d lookalike ,, why ??

  • I couldn't agree more. Being a chemical biology major, this will be something I will keep in mind.

  • FORGET ABOUT GOD, YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF

  • How did he manage to talk for 16 minutes about empowering the patient without once mentioning Patients Like Me, Cure Together, Microsoft Health Vault, or Quantified Self?

  • what a beautiful human being. to have survived all that and come out with so much joy and knowlege... and the rap towards the end was icing on the cake!! :D

  • 15:14 Is that a guy with a Green Lantern t-shirt?!

  • Honestly I started to tear up. Very touching talk.

"My doctor never told me that, I had to hear it from phish"

My doctor never told me about fibromyalgia, even though my mother has it, and we share many of the same symptoms. I feel like he wasting years of my time, and to him I was probably just some kid that came to complain to me every once an a while.

  • Quite weird situation it is.

You are The only person, who knows how You feel, but you can't diagnose the condition.

On the other hand we have a trained professional, who can diagnose, but has no clue of how you feel.

So what's the point in hiding information from a patient

(and why the heck you call it ethics???)

  • @SEThatered We've had to hide medical information from my grandmother, coz she makes medical decisions based on how stroppy she's feeling at the time.

If we didn't do this to/for her, she'd be dead.

So i can understand why doctors feel the need to do this.

  • muito bom, fuiiiiii

  • my god, amazing !

  • awesome and very needed message

  • Don't worry Mr. deBronkart, 15:12 Green Lantern's already on the job!

  • Give me my damn data

  • simply f*cking brilliant!!!!!

  • omdz, there are spare seats in the audience??? at a TED talk? .... :(

  • @gagzy1989 i know right, i want one :(

  • @gagzy1989 It's to create the illusion that even YOU can get a seat.

  • @gagzy1989 Hahaha! In that case, I'll start trying :D

  • moving talk

  • @GuitarSongCoverDude I think she said "and bless yourself"

  • I never noticed that countdown screen in front of the speaker before.

  • Yes

  • Rockstar

  • This guy is officially awesome.

  • actually, this old man is real inspiration, that you can be a great person even if you're old or whatever. to be unstoppable

  • they need a place to gather good data. like a peer reviewed site

  • Terrific, fantastic speaker!

    BRAVO!!!

(Sadly, I've found only about 1/4 doctors really, personally care about their patients. For the rest they're just statistics.))

    Thanks TED.

  • anyone else see the green lantern nerd in the audience

  • @retardmasta what nerd? I saw THE Green Lantern in the audience.

  • 15:13 Green Lanter approves this message :)

  • Patients have a lot of time to learn and research on their particular health issue, doctors don't have this luxury. This is why patients can often find better treatments for rare or uncommon issues.

  • @LhyphenFour, Rubbish. Doctors are employed to seek the cures, preventions, and treatments that are available. That is their single most important role, above even administering it, they must find it first.

  • @karooha Try to have some empathy. Unless the doctor is hired for that specific patient, they don't have the time. Because of America's current health care system, for example, medical professionals all over that country are really feeling pressure to be essentially perfect. The human instinct to survive makes us very angry and picky with our health care. And further more, it isolates the medical world. Doctors are people too, with that same survival instinct. They really try.

  • Just... awesome.

    Good work Dave.

  • great ted talk!

  • Third?

  • ....I usually never ever do this but....SECOND!
