I know how Dusty was able to wrestle Billy Graham in MSG I guess Vince Sr. had a meeting Eddie Graham to put the matches together. They also had matches in Florida
Vince McMahon Sr is probably one of the mysterious icons in the history of the wrestling business. He was a great businessman and a very classy guy, but for the most part Vince McMahon Sr was very low-key. A lot of times when you watch the AWA and NWA you'll Verne Gange or Jim Crockett pop up on TV for an interview or to put over the promotion, but Vince McMahon Sr always maintained a low-profile backstage. Rarely ever will you see him an appearance on-camera during this period.
@mastermold2009 Yes, it is hard to imagine but lets remember that Vince McMahon Sr was running the WWF at this time, and that Vince McMahon Sr maintained a very good relationship with the NWA. As a matter of fact the WWF was actually a member of the NWA at this time at least until 1983, and I believe that Vince McMahon Sr was actually a member of the Board of Directors at this time and had quite a bit of stroke back then.
@lildwayne21 strange I thought I heard through Legends of wrestling round table that the NWA and WWWF had parted ways when Vince Sr, decided to put the title on Buddy Rogers and starting the linage of a separate world championship line.... Though I don't doubt they kept good ties as Vince Sr did business with other territories, it began there to be a separate entity and no longer under the NWA Umbrella
This is real wrestling right here boy. Wrestling during the 70s and 80s was off the chain, and anybody who thinks it wasn't obviously doesn't have lot of respect for the history of professional wrestling, or has allowed themselves to become just a lil too enamored by the current state of professional wrestling in 2012.
@spoodyface Dusty had a lot of political stroke back in the 80s that allowed him to wrestle for different territories and really branch out and become a big star. Throughout his wrestling career Dusty Rhodes always maintained a lot of good, strong connections in a lot of different territories he wrestled in. Promoters liked Dusty, because not only he was a bigtime draw, but because he was a people person and also because of the fact he was do damn creative.
Dusty was so over back then. He wrestle Super star Billy Grahm in NY in front of 20,000 the wrestle Harley Race for the NWA World title in the same week. Now that is being over. The only other wrestle's to come near that was THE ROAD WARRIORS
One of my favorite match !! I first saw this match in 2006 when I bought the Dusty Rhodes DVD set. What a great little match, great footage, a NWA World Title match in a WWF event, at Madison Square Garden, Vince Mcmahon on the commentary !!! Great footage.
@melbz1266 that is correct and the WWWF/WWF was a member of the NWA until they left in 1983. This was NOT the first or last time the NWA World Title was defended on either a WWF card or a show at MSG. I do recall even in recent years during the late 90s, Dan "The Beast" Severn defended the NWA World Title on a couple of WWF cards at MSG when Jim Cornette brought NWA wrestling to WWF.
@bigpoppanard boy, do i miss the the old nwa and awa. there were so many good wrestlers and the champ held on to it for a few years, not like now they hold it til the next pay per view. its a time that will never return. thats why i try to watch as many videos on you tube and read my magazines from the mid 50's to mid 80's.
@melbz1266 Yes, sir you are correct. It's a shame that there's not that much video footage out there on Vince McMahon Sr. As I said before and I'll say it again, out of all the wrestling promoters that existed during the 70s and 80s, he remains one of the most mysterious figures in the history of wrestling promoting by far.
