Thank you, funkamedic, for posting this truly fantastic historical performance. Love that it's in black and white too, gives it that nice nostalgic old school feel. Too bad I wasn't even alive until a few years later, must have been the best new years eve ever!
Somehow aquired this on tape long ago. Still one of the best cassette recordings I have. You know how you hear a show and try to picture yourself there? Been doin it to that tape for years and this video confirms my imaginary 1978 New Years show.
It's a treat to hear and see this tape of the first Dead show I saw "because I watched" a Jerry video awhile ago. My girlfriend and I must have been the youngest ones there. Turn it up, because this show was astonishingly loud! They started the bike in the rafters; the exhaust pipe must have been miked because it was like living inside a jet engine. I remember Scarlet Begonias as a highlight--Donna Jean and all still sound just great.
i have looked everywhere and can not buy a copy or cd,etc. this is some awesome rare asx ship! all i can find is the ending to winterland 1978 which i have no doubts is not half as good as right here.. all the pieces fell in place on this day in time. God Bless the Grateful Dead.. i know i do :D
How did you get an hour and a half on youtube? But this is one hell of a show, Jerry was really feelin it! I'm a 16 year old deadhead who misses Big Jerry G everyday!
This'll sound crazy, but I actually feel honored or special to have lived or even heard the Grateful Dead. I saw a few shows, but upset I can't remember them. We'll be alright .
great post! I believe this dvd is available from GDP, and in color, but this seems to be the only version online that i can find. Epic show- great sound- and i kinda like the b&w look. I used to have this show ans had an amazing interview with Kesey talking about the Egypt shows. Thanks again for the upload! Love it
The Egypt shows happened 8 months after this show. You are thinking of 1978 not 1977. This here is a rare vid and should not be pulled. Phil wearing a trucker hat, Bob Weir wearing that top-hat... it was a year earlier than the Closing of Winterland.
The Music Never Stopped, Tennessee Jed, Finiculi Finicula, Me & My Uncle, Loser, Jack Straw, Friend Of The Devil, Lazy Lightning-> Supplication
Set II
Sugar Magnolia-> Scarlet Begonias-> Fire On The Mountain, Truckin'-> Wharf Rat-> Drums-> Not Fade Away-> Around & Around, E:One More Saturday Night-> E: Casey Jones
This video has been on my to-watch list for so long and I finally got around to watching the whole thing. Definitely made writing my essay not suck. Even if my essay sucks.
No other band has ever written one-tenth as many songs that are simply superb, whether from a melodic, lyrical or emotive standpoint. And as regards musicianship - well, are there words? I think not!
The greatest music by the Dead is simply the finest popular music ever recorded, or ever likely to be recorded. Such astonishing sophistication and sublimity!
