The main point is if it's not yours to teach, don't teach. The creators spend a lot of time developing their WORK so they can sell it. It is ART and we sell it. We make our LIVING selling our work. If you bypass buying it, you are a thief by possessing it. And by posting how to videos or audios you are violating copyrights and our CODE OF ETHICS.
Actually posting "how to" video or audio does NOT violate copyright so long as the video is your own production with your own words and pictures and not a rip-off direct copy.
Also many magicians merely present an alternative presentation of existing effects. They don't create new ones.
So, for example, explaining Stigmata which was first published as the "blood writing test" in 1967 and dates back to the US civil war, would not violate any existing "creation" as it is an old effect.
Dr Brown, I agree, to an extent BUT there is a big difference between posting an 'I know how it's done' response to a trick and posting a Tutorial video. Only the people who WANT the explanation will search out the explanation. And for those of us with limited budgets, some of them are a great source. And they can inspire enthusiasm to keep practising, if nothing else.

I hear you loud and clear. Thanks for this. For people to reveal tricks - whether because they are ignorant of the magician's code or they are amateurs looking for attention - is nothing short of sabotage to the profession on the whole and the targeted magician in particular. I doubt that bro... A true magician wouldn't post reveal a bunch of tricks... Us magicians have a saying 'Pay the price of practice'. First of all, in order to perform most magic, you need to consider a bunch of things. Angles, misdirection, proper finger placements... what did your post teach anyone about that? NOTHING! You also should give the inventor of the trick credit for it, by purchasing it...

It's not necessary to pay for effects. There is plenty of free material to be shared on the net and elsewhere. Secrets are to be shared among magicians. The IBM says so, and I'm a member, so there.

Thank You! I hate the freakin tutorials. I dont mind the very beginner ones just to get people started. But to post like ellusionist tricks and how to do them is just retarted. i agree because tutorials are what got me into magic in the first place and although it is incredible to be completly stumped by and amazing cardtrick and to be astonished. but, i would rather be the one that astonishes people by showing them a trick i have learned and online is the only way i can learn because i'm 13 years of age i dont have enough money to buy dvd's and PROPER video's and tutorials
but i am saving up for one dvd and cant wait to get it.

I remeber when i saw card countdown and i thought it was unreal. Now that i have improved my skills and knowledge in magic In figured it realised how it was done. Back then i would haved killed for a tutorial, but know that i am more mature in magic i have realized that no tutorial was the best thing or i wouldnt continued in magic

You don't want more FREE tutorials, but you trade money for tutorials that is not making magic for pleasure, the real magicians doesn't leave anymore, even houdini tricks are being revealed. teling people to stop or asking to people to stop isnt going to do much. take action and edit ur videos so that comments related videos or video responses and edit ur tags by using ur name, youtube username and ur nickname as tags so that hecklers and exposers cant revea the trick. that should help alot
I think you are right some tutorials are made very badly by kids trying to show off. In the UK shapeshifter DVD costs £20 i don't understand people who spend that kind of money then just give it away for free on youtube. More money than sense. Good luck coming up with new material.

I have 2 comments though: 1) Please keep this video uploaded on here and elsewhere, the message needs to get across, and 2) I disagree totally with your PPS saying it's OK to exchange private tutorials. It undermines your previous point that we ought to be learning from the original, correct sources and give credit where it's due. These tutorials could - as you rightly point out - be teaching the wrong way, and lifting other people's material. Please consider.

Besides, most of the tutorial videos suck anyway. luccaskunk, if you think you cant be a magician because you are a girl, then you are sadly mistaken. Looking at the description of the video? Is that a thinly veiled death threat? "Don't reveal secrets or we'll hunt you down and kill you"? Am I reading that right? I tried to be a magician when I was younger, but got threatened not to get into it for being a girl. I therefore have no respect for magicians or their "secrets". Also, the "code" only applies to those who have joined the "guild". And the "guild" doesn't allow girls.
You can explain a trick, but you will always be wrong, especially if your divulging the secret. Knowing how to do the trick means nothing. Its all about knowing how to create the magic.

It's not JUST the fact that tutorials are present. It's the fact that tutorials are HORRIBLY put together and magic's being taught incorrectly.
If you really have a respect for magic, buy your tricks. Invest some money into it. If you really don't want to spend money on it, borrow a book that teaches you. But if you ever want to do quality effects you have to invest money.
Its one thing to rail against bad tutorials, but tutorials in general arent that harmful. They can be misleading, but for someone who doesnt have access to a wide range of magic tricks, and doesnt want to spend the money to get them offline, its actually realy helpful to see tutorial that give a a general working knowledge of how a trick functions.

Revolution Vanish - The coin is pushed off the back of the hand into the trouser pocket.
Stigmata - Scratch your arm before, the blood fills the scratch when they hold your wrist
Indecent - The card is stuck on the outside of the plastic bag, it's not actually inside.
Infusion - tip the glass quickly upside down and flick the coin in there.
Mindbender - wet the back of your hand, the water curls the card.
Ultimate CTW - get their card on top using the pass, palm off and take to other side.

Now you really are showing your ignorance:
1. Methods/ideas cannot be copyrighted. Only the exact text/videos explaining them is. Anyone is at liberty to explain those methods in different words and pictures & it's not illegal.
2. Ellusionist didn't invent the effects. Eg Stigmata was published in a 1967 magic book as the "Blood Writing Test" and dates back to the civil war where it was sold for around 1$
3. You claim to be studying law. You can't even spell copyright or therefore. Hahaha.

Other people making and spreading tutorials about your tricks means that people know how it's done.
It doesn't matter how many people know that, the trick is cracked.
Stay original, stay creative, come up with tricks that no one can figure out, then there will be no tutorials.

i agree because tutorials are what got me into magic in the first place and although it is incredible to be completly stumped by and amazing cardtrick and to be astonished. but, i would rather be the one that astonishes people by showing them a trick i have learned and online is the only way i can learn because i'm 13 years of age i dont have enough money to buy dvd's and PROPER video's and tutorials
but i am saving up for one dvd and cant wait to get it.

I remeber when i saw card countdown and i thought it was unreal. Now that i have improved my skills and knowledge in magic In figured it realised how it was done. Back then i would haved killed for a tutorial, but know that i am more mature in magic i have realized that no tutorial was the best thing or i wouldnt continued in magic

teling people to stop or asking to people to stop isnt going to do much. take action and edit ur videos so that comments related videos or video responses and edit ur tags by using ur name, youtube username and ur nickname as tags so that hecklers and exposers cant revea the trick. that should help alot

I think you are right some tutorials are made very badly by kids trying to show off. In the UK shapeshifter DVD costs £20 i don't understand people who spend that kind of money then just give it away for free on youtube. More money than sense. Good luck coming up with new material.

Chris, this is a good video. I have 2 comments though: 1) Please keep this video uploaded on here and elsewhere, the message needs to get across, and 2) I disagree totally with your PPS saying it's OK to exchange private tutorials. It undermines your previous point that we ought to be learning from the original, correct sources and give credit where it's due. These tutorials could - as you rightly point out - be teaching the wrong way, and lifting other people's material. Please consider.

Chris, you are absolutely right. If you want to know how a trick is done, go out and buy it. Besides, most of the tutorial videos suck anyway. luccaskunk, if you think you cant be a magician because you are a girl, then you are sadly mistaken. Looking at the description of the video? Is that a thinly veiled death threat? "Don't reveal secrets or we'll hunt you down and kill you"? Am I reading that right? I tried to be a magician when I was younger, but got threatened not to get into it for being a girl. I therefore have no respect for magicians or their "secrets". Also, the "code" only applies to those who have joined the "guild". And the "guild" doesn't allow girls.

It's not JUST the fact that tutorials are present. It's the fact that tutorials are HORRIBLY put together and magic's being taught incorrectly.
If you really have a respect for magic, buy your tricks. Invest some money into it. If you really don't want to spend money on it, borrow a book that teaches you. But if you ever want to do quality effects you have to invest money.

Its one thing to rail against bad tutorials, but tutorials in general arent that harmful. They can be misleading, but for someone who doesnt have access to a wide range of magic tricks, and doesnt want to spend the money to get them offline, its actually realy helpful to see tutorial that give a a general working knowledge of how a trick functions.
