  • Like this if you play tuba...and cant afford your own.

  • One of the best renditions of Gregson Tuba Concerto I have ever heard. If I learn this piece I am going to listen to this recording a lot.

  • hats off to you. one of the best performances I've heard of this piece. ever. Fletch worthy

  • Man this piece is awesome, hard though. I just got it yesterday and its so fun. Im using it as my scholarship audition piece.

  • Could someone, please, send me this sheet music? My email is livewhat@gmail.com . Thank you

  • how high does this go? and how is it compared to vaughan williams?

  • @KauaiBallerof2012 i think it goes up to the E above the staff.. and high G if you play the new cadenza. some of its harder than vaughan williams, some easier

  • I cant wait till I can play as well as you!!

  • My favorite phrase is the Ralph Vaughan Williams quote.

  • @suzegod4205 I think mine too. The lyrical section is just awesome.

  • In regards to buying a tuba before college is all around a bad idea. First you need to develop a good and articulation and simply know what to look for in a tuba (is there any resistance when blowing air? or is it free flowing). And most importantly bring another trained tubist with you to decide that you sound best on that horn.

  • Is a yamaha 822 in f or in c?

    probably in F

  • Is a yamaha 822 in f or in c?

  • Yamaha ycb 822 4/4 CC Tuba

    $12,250.99

  • i want to become like you man you are the best ive heard like EVER! i have no idea how you became so good

  • I love this piece in particular but you vibrato made the piece a bit better. I'm going to try this piece for a solo do you have any suggestions? Otherwise great playing nice tone and the runs were consistent.

  • Muy buen ejecutado, felicidades.....

  • im sorry but the band your playing with sucks hahah

  • @0BIGBUCKEYE9 ha, i was thinking the exact same thing. lol.

  • This was an extraordinary concerto. He played it as if he had written it himself. I'm not sure about how the other kinds of tubas work or the exact differences but I'd like to know. If someone could fill me in that would be nice. I play a bbflat tuba. I am only 16 and my director is going all over the place about me. 1st 1st at all region. But if someone could get back to my on the types of tubas it would be helpful.

  • @ilygc34 first try out for all state if you do have one which you should have it in your state, if your playing on going to college for music you NEED to get a cc tuba. cc is just a step up above bbflat but you will have to learn all new fingerings the sooner you get it the better

I got a very decent Miraphone 188, a gig bag and a hard case for 4k on Craig's List.

  • Great sound man, the mistakes were few and very specific!

  • as a trumpet player I now have a new respect for the tuba =]

  • looks like 4 people hate awesome tuba playing

  • Excellent job, Derek

  • I'd be bored too, if I played oboe.

  • Is this the guy that just won the New Jersey gig?

  • @haneycr Not quite, he hasn't won it yet. He is in the final two, and he gets to play with them in May before they decide whether he gets it.

  • Ahh! I have to do this song for solo and ensemble next weekend. (On a BBflat tuba) Any advice?

  • I like how Gregson alludes to Vaughn William's concerto

  • SO good!

  • Thank for this upload (: up untill this point i had no apprectiaton for the tuba untill now

  • i have this solo. wish i could play it as well as you.....

  • i know this might seem like a lot..... but could you give me lessons?

  • I'm on my second year playing tuba, and I'd like to know where I could find solos like this for tuba?

    Thanks :]

  • @LamelyShane you should hire a private tutor...they ussually have plenty of solos. But you can order them from JWPepper.com

  • excuse my ignorance, but I thought only training tuba's didn't have the 4 valves? Yet I am fairly certain thatis not a training tuba....

  • This one has 5! It's a Yamaha 822.

  • @hugoishuge no its is how they are made. some are made with four others with three depends who makes them :) but yes three valve tubas are a lot easier to train a tuba on i must say ;) andyes i am a tuba player :)

  • man i love everything about this performance. Your tone is phenomenal, If you ever make a solo cd, im definitely buying it

  • Is that you?

  • Ummmm...yeah. :-)

  • Are you going to sell your Yamaha?

  • I actually sold it a while ago....

  • the oboe player seems bored haha

  • @hoos891405 Yeah. She's an oboe player.

  • @hoos891405 - probably because she's not a tuba player. I play principal oboe in our orchestra, but tuba was my first instrument. I'd not only be quite interested, but would be wishing I was up there playing it! Very nice performance, tubachef!! (My tuba only has four valves, but it's still a wonderful instrument.)

  • what type of tuba is that

  • Wonderful performance. Gentle soft playing. Exact pitch. great musicality of the player. Shoul be put on a disc for the enjoyment of the general public.

  • Beautiful musicality, gentle sound, exact pitch. Wonderful performance.

  • What type of tuba do you normally play?

  • That tuba is a Yahama 822, but I no longer play it, as I recently bought a Pt-16.

  • I can't stop listening to this. This guy is amazing.

  • Excellent performance. My best regards.

  • Great sound. Great performance.

  • Great performance! The Gregson is one of my favorite tuba concertos.

  • i wunder tuba is he pplaying? bbf? or the other 1's?

  • I love your tone quality. Round, bouncy and light. not being biased here but i really think it's one of the best tones i've heard in my life.

  • Hey there Derek! Lovely performance, I don't think I saw any mistake in any of the Movements, Congratulations :)

Do you think you can upload the sheet music and give me the link? I would love to try the piece :)

  • awsome piece...love how it goes intoo the1 vaughan williams concerton...awsome player=awsome performance. Keep up the work.

  • Very well performed!

  • This makes we want to learn tuba!

  • I'm playing this piece at the moment and I personally does not like the way he performes it.... I'm doing it quite different!

  • @Khetodo post your performance.

  • @jkdoe7000 I will, as soon as school's on again and I can get a hold of my pianist! :D

  • well played! x

  • I love this piece , along with Concerto for bass tuba by gregson. I'm attempting both of these peices and challenging me to have them done before my frshman year is over! Any1 think i can do it? :)

  • that all depends on the time you put into it, if you pull it off post it on youtube

  • Going to play this for Mississippi Lion's Band next year great piece but i only get two minutes to show it off on my Bb :/

  • I have a BBb and hit the high E on the Meistensinger. Ive never played this, but hope to as I love the piece

  • also, this guy was just m conductor for the Indiana All-State orchestra

  • Bravo!!!

  • I played this years ago.

Very nicely done, very clean and musical.

  • counting should be internalized, and not shown with your hand. I played it on a C tuba and the High E's were nothing. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Oh man. The high E. I've still got problems with it. What tuba is that btw?

  • Yamaha YFB 822 F tuba. He is selling it if you are interested

  • very good.........very very good :D

  • im trying to play this piece now but am not getting the good tone or range i can get low enough I just cant sustain the higher notes any advice you could give me?

  • Air, use lot's of air and sustain. Keep the air steady

  • im doing this solo for high school solo ensomble on a bflat tuba ive been workin crazy hard on the high E's but ive nailed them pretty well

  • I love how you mark rests with your holding hand. It's fun to watch, and seems to work well(:

  • Sorry...it's a habit! I can't tell I'm doing it...

At least it shows I'm counting :-)

  • I love the Vaughn Williams lick !

  • very nice...

  • Seriously, amazing though.

I'm playing this for juries this year. It's great.

  • you have a beautiful tone, especially on the high E

  • Excellent. Really moved me, thats hard to do with a tuba.

  • I would totally do you!

  • Beautifully done! Amazing sound! Definetely deserving of a Master in Music. Superior rating!

  • D.... you inspired me !!!! MUSIC....!!

    Thanks !

  • Great!!

    Your tone is very beautiful.

    Are you professional Tuba player?

Of the tone of the tuba will refer to it.

    A wonderful performance, thank you!

    from Japan.

  • He just won the Falcone contest. It won't be long before Derek has either a full time teaching or performance job.

    But yes, he's scary good.

  • Wow! Such beauty of tone and control of phrasing! I wish everyone in the world played this well. I know he had a few blemishes but this was a live performance and I don't think you could find many better live recordings of it than this! (if you do, let me know) I strive to be as good as you Derek Fenstermacher. Pleasure to watch! Who did your recording? They were fantastic, super professional looking

  • It's a Yamaha YFB-822b F tuba!

  • yeah i love her afinity, wow

  • i get the impression that this must be challenging, but a really cool concerto to play. (I am not a tuba player as u can prolly tell...) I would LOVE to see more concerti for this beautiful but under-rated instrument!

  • Wow, he really ran away with the tempo in the very high section...

Can't believe he actually missed a note.

But well done. Fantastic sound, articulation, intonation, and interpretation.

  • whats the highest note in this movement

  • E natural. The lowest is the second D below the staff.

This guy studied with Demondrae at the University of Alabama before going up there. He was in high school in the same years I was at Auburn, and he did fantastic things at All-State. Demondrae did a super job with him.

  • E...

  • It was just ok. I could do better. hahahaha Great Job Derek. Dwight

  • Super ! Manque plus que je le bosse pour rentrer au conservatoire ^^

  • beauty

    band sounds good too but

    love the roundness of tuba
