I absolutely love this movie it's pretty comparable to being market-garden version of the longest day but my favorite part is when they first reach Son Bridge where it is blown up Stout:"Shit!"
I thought Elliot Gould was great in these scenes. I'm sure Americans of the time had his humor or some humor. Many of our soldiers by this point of the war were pretty young, even underage. I've read that, from 1945 onward, German citizens were stunned by the casual demeanor of American troops ..
@mpjrdldn I think I read that Allied troops felt the same way when American troops came over for WWI.
Actually that reminds me of a great scene in "The Lost Battalion" where an American POW tells a German officer who he's facing, summarizing them as "big city gangsters."
@mpjrdldn On a semi-related note, there's my favorite line from the movie "Casablanca." It's from the scene where the German officer is telling Rick that Germany might someday invade America, to which Rick responds, "There are some neighborhoods in New York City I suggest you not invade."
A good side story to this is that the 101st captured the telephone exchange in the town and were able to talk to the engineers of XXX Corps directly without the problematic radios. They made radio contact and told them to find a telephone and call"SON 244".
I ment "british determination and craftsmanship" in coming up with something that even today is an amazing feat of Engineering as most of the Bailey bridges are still standing.
Actually, if was not their fault that the Allies were defeated in Operation Market-Garden. The Germans sent in their best-trained fighting units, including the famous parachute regiment.
Bridge was a British design and construction and both Brits and Yanks fought like hell in Holland so you could make weak comments like this as a free man. Give credit where credit is due.
Yes the British fought gloriously at SIngapore...and Hong Kong.....and Malaysia.....(three humilating surrenders) the Brits had brown pants from fighting the Japanese....where we demolished them...God Bless America...who saved Britain twice from speaking German.
We supplied both sides for as long as possible before committing, nice little earner Ford and IBM had going in Germany.
We joined both wars late the Brits had been fighting for years before we showed up. In WWII we arrived after the Battle of Britain.
We charged the UK for every piece of equipment we 'gave' them, Germany had finished paying war repatriations before the UK had finished paying the war loan.
SO how long did it take to build that bridge? For that time had 30th Corps to be kept on the southern bank of the Wilhelminakanaal. Thus hampering a drive to the north.
Things would be a lot easier now with two mayor motorways at your disposal :p
Fantastic part of the Film, shows how close the Brits and the Yanks came in the War. And the Bailey Bridge just a Fantastic piece of great british determination and craftsmanship.

Montgomery's brother in law was a manufacturer of easily-assembled boats. Montgomery did not avail him of enough of these boats.

It's a quote from the Simpsons when Fat Homer tried to get into the movie theatre, but there wasn't a seat big enough for him.
