If you look up some of Carlos' earlier works he started out with his family playing music and they all kind of sang together. They have a VH1 (i think classic) video about him and his music career you can check out. It might even be here on youtube.

Santana can play within many different styles. He plays rock and blues, as well as jazz and fusion. He's a very diverse and proficient musician.

I really don't hear anything wrong with his rendition of this song. He's playing the right blues/rock scales for the song at the right times. Of course he might not be doing a psychodelic tripping out way of the riffs but this is Carlos and he's doing it his way. That's what makes his parts of the song unique. People don't set out to look for artists that sound the same, they want something fresh and new.

This is just my opinion.

I´m not saying that his playing anything wrong or anything, but that he isnt as great as people wants him to be. and that he do not deserve to be a guitar hero.

john petrucci deserve it, he have a good view over where arpeggios is, and scales is. john mayer deserves it couse h knows how to pick a cool solo. I´m not saying carlos is a bad guitaris but that his not THAT great, good, but not great. sorry, this is just my opinion.

Either way he does a really good job in all that he tries to do like you say. I love both Santana and Jimi a lot and I wouldn't be able to pick who I liked more. lol

sure carlos isn't playing very hard riffs or solos, but i'm he knows for sure how to do these.

It just doesn't fir to him when we'd show up for a show and be p0laying like john petrucci or kirk hammet.

So you can't really judge how good a guitarist is. It's not like in an olympic discipline where you have rules to see who's the best. This is music and Carlos is definatly one of the best guitarist outside because he exactly knows what to play at which moment.

The sound technician is fucking up! I used to go to every Santana concert that came to my city back in the day. But I stopped going because it seemed like his sound engineers couldn't get their shit together! The last time I saw Carlos live was the late 90's and the sound in the theater was totally fucked! You couldn't even hear the guitar! Who the fuck wants to sit through a Santana concert and not be able to hear the guitar? Fire that mofo Carlos!

You gotta be kidding! Carlos is at the top if your talking only about Rock guitarists. I would rank him and Jeff Beck near the top of the genre. But there are guitarists in other styles like fusion and jazz that are better than him. Alan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, Greg Howe, Pat Metheny, George Benson and Pat Martino to name a few.
