im playing my LP through a line6 HD150 half stack. Do you have any specific amp settings for that exact tone? Im sure its the bridge pickup with mid cranked up on the amp and tremelo, but gain? bass? treble? channel volume?
Since it's the 1st chord in the thing, AND it's so argued over, it's best if they don't finish their first-ever guitar lesson thinking they're playing D major!! Finally, it's just one of me favorite chords of all time (D sus 2). This chord is in about 80% and is the centerpiece/root/featured in ~20% of EVERY R,E.M. song ever written (and likely that ever will be!!) Not to mention the Smiths, Byrds, and imitators. To me it's a sweet chord, and I'm just picky about it. Sorry for the drivel.
It's definitely not D5, and not a powerchord either, that much I know. I'm only writing this boring drivel because as others have commented, the excellent lesson and clear, real-time rolling notation you did is gr8 AND it's on the "very" end of the "simple" scale, thus the beginning player is more likely to consult this lesson (and pay the closest attention).
CHORDWISE: The first chord played is the controversial Dsus2 chord, not, in my limited opinion D; or more formally D major, as it's notated. I say controversial because it's been hard to get a str8 answer on what this damn chord is. Some people say the sus2 spelling doesn't exist, other sources call this chord the D9, and finally some say Dadd9. The last 2 are WAY off per the reverse lookup I just did. Some people also call it "D5" which seems to mean a "power chord" ie the 1 and the 5. It
Gr8 Lesson. I saw the same movie, and thought it neat to see how much pure pleasure James got from just listening to this powerful, but to JP probably VERY simple song. And he kept listening - not just for a 10 seconds, like you'd expect these days in a documentary for people our age.
Please see my comment below on a chord name that needs-a-changin'.
Brilliant...exactly what I needed...playing ukulele as a rhythm back up on this (and a few other surf songs) at a gig tonight...now thanksto this I understand how the solo works!Thanks x

@dkomjath It'd be a Dsus2 if the open (high) e was played. Since the 4 notes in the chord are A, D, A and D, it is effectively a D5.
Dsus2 = x00230.

@Lowebrau so, if someone picked up a guitar for the first time yesterday, and they can't figure this out on their own, they should give up? ok......
